Modo: in fairness, without disagreeing on the point itself, I didn't think it was a great idea for Rafa to be saying it openly.
That's true. Could be a cultural thing. I don't remember Rafa criticising players publicly.Modo: in fairness, without disagreeing on the point itself, I didn't think it was a great idea for Rafa to be saying it openly.
Did he take us to the promised land?I don't buy into with this notion that Gerrard was never really suited for the central midfield role.
His performances at the age of 34 and the opinion of Rafa, a defensive minded control freak who was never quite able to build out the attack properly lest it sacrifice the defence in any way shape or form, make for a pretty poor argument.
Did he take us to the promised land?
Who are you referring to, Rafa or Gerrard?
Rafa.
Err... well, if the promised land is the league title, then no he didn't.
I'm not quite sure what you're getting at here.
What I'm getting at is that he won us a CL title and got us to another final. I'll take his advice for the time being.
What position did Gerrard play in 04/05?
And what Rafa did / didn't achieve is besides the point.
The point is that Rafa didn't like Gerrard as a CM in his rather rigid system. That doesn't mean to say he can't play CM. There are other systems and managers who have different approaches to the game just might have found a place for Gerrard in midfield.
I bet it was people like you who were saying that Spearing was better than Lucas. I wish I could find that thread.Lucas was chasing shadows. It's like men against an old man the way he struggled to get anywhere near a Southampton player. At this rate we might as well have Rossiter in for some experience. He surely can't be anymore static than Lucas. He can't even get close enough to fulfill his "foul near the edge of the box" quota
The 4 CBs was because of injuries no?
Can might have had a niggle on Sunday but still should have played Allen instead.

Lucas is still good for us as a back up to Gerrard to play that DM position. So I wont sell him at all, he has his own difficulties but he is the best replacement we have if Gerrard gets injured. He wont be creative and visionary as Gerrard but imo he will do enough and we will always have Hendo and Lovren to play those cute long balls to Studge or Sterling.
It is just that playing Lucas and Gerrard together is such a noob thing to do. So Lucas is still good but not with Gerrard together but as a back up to Gerrard.
So, when Rafa "took us to the promised land", Gerrard played as a central midfielder.
Thanks for your time.
