Seriously?

I was pissed. Still am, but I didnt rate him today, he got in great attacking positions, but every time gave it away or spooned the shot.

Granted his best work was without the ball, but he did drive forward a little and created a couple of decent chances. His shooting was fucking atrocious though.

I think think the lad is growing in confidence, even attacking more when he's not 'supposed' to. I also belive that 4-4-2 suits hm better.
Good game, but Fabio was my MOTM.

I thought he was great today. My confusion is benayoun. Thought he did well, but mom? Really? he was wasting the ball quite a lot

*yawn*

Now we'll have to suffer the 'he was MOTM against utd' (even though he wasn't) line over and over again, as he blunders through his next 10 games playing like a flid.

GYAC, one game in 10 when he isn't totally shit does not make him a good player
When a young player steps up on the big occasion like that, its a very positive thing. Sorry your need to seem right in your foul-mouthed abuse means you have to make a spectacle of yourself again.

Yes, he did do well. Maybe even MOTM today.
I acknowledged that in my first post.
But it is not 'one-eyed' to suggest that Lucas, in general, plays the ball sideways or backwards most of the time.
His passing is limited.
Agree with the first part - utterly disagree with the second part.

I think and have said for some time that he plays the ball back or sideways for two reasons; first he's been given a role to sit back like Mascher and second because we don't have the greatest level of movement up front. His play before coming here was to go forward and find players or shoot. There was one instance against the mancs where he was looking longingly for someone to move ahead of him and get in some space. Eventually he turned around and passed to Carra before looking forward and holding his arms up in frustration. Sometimes we're so static up front it looks like we've been hit by Buck Rogers stun gun.

I think his passing is very good - not the long range passing of an Alonso or Gerrard but the shorter style passing and his ability to see pass and know where the support player is without seemingly looking is first rate. I hope he does / is allowed to focus forward more often in future games but I somehow doubt that will be the case when Gerrard is in the side.

Lucas was excellent today. Then in the 95th minute, he plays a very good ball from the top of our own box out to Kuyt at the halfway line. Lucas runs 40 yards before getting it back and sending N'Gog on his way. I'm not sure anyone else would have done that save for Stevie. Lucas looked full of confidence today and capped off a great performance with a huge display of heart in the 95th.

He'll never be Xabi, or Stevie, or Mascer, but he,s no Diao either. More performances like today please.....

I fail to see how Lucas, of all people, has become so polarizing here. Anybody with a pair of eyes and some basic knowledge of the game can see that Lucas Pezzini Leiva is a capable young squad player, fairly consistent for his age, but at the moment lacking something "extra" to make him stand out. Sort of like Flamini before he started scoring goals. He is not an enigma like Garcia or an unusual type of player like Kuyt; if anything, he is predictable and boring. How some people manage to praise him to high heavens while others consider him one of the worst LFC players in history and harbor so much hate towards the lad is beyond me.

If he doesn't reply Ryan then I'd take that as an answer. 😉

The only thing I can say is that both of you are safe 🙂

Id rather have Matt Lucas in the side, at least he would not get pushed off the ball so easily.

I thought he had an above average game. Which is a step in the right direction, he needs to get the consistancy now.

I think maybe his confidence has been shot to peices and this is why he has been so bad.

But who cares, with Aqualini coming in soon, things are looking up!

He played really well today, yes.

But I'd have Carra, Mascher and Yossi ahead of him in the MOM stakes...

And to be honest, the whole "this performance will shut people up" nonsense is as annoying as when the reverse "see, told you he was shite" posts are made.

One performance neither makes nor breaks a reputation. Most of us have a reasonable handle on what Lucas is and isn't, and sit bemused, watching from the sidelines as the LCDNW and the LCDNR camps strive to out told-you-so each other.

Ha - good post mate; I actually would think this is argument is kind of humerous - at least more so than the tedious RCDNW v RCDNR edition.

He was okay yesterday but the flaws are there for all to see. I can't see him ever being good enough for a starting berth in our team and don't particularly want him even as a squad player but obviously he will be around for a while longer.

And you say I talk shite and was biased towards poor players.

Yossi, Torres Masher Carragher Agger Kuyt were all better.

He played well as everyone did but he is still the first player than needs dropping.

So how come, after 'taking on the best midfield the Champions had to offer' he was so fucking shit against Spurs, Villa, Chelsea, Fiorentina etc etc ad infinitum?

Hmmm?
I think it's widely known as 'credit where it's due'.
I'm going mad. Clearly.

I normally stick up for Lucas, but thought he had a 'mare today.
Really Jon? He played the through ball to Kuyt and the one for N'Gog, the only 'miss' I remember was the close range shot (which he should have buried).

I've just watched the MOTD highlights and Lucas' role in the second goal is significant. He won the ball in defence, looked up to find Kuyt on the right, ran up the field to get the return pass, drew the two defenders before slipping the ball to N'Gog just at the right time. Magnificent play.

I thought he had a good game yesterday and is showing signs of improvement. The problem with him is people can't see through the many many shite performances he's put in. He has played better this year but some people can't see through their opinion of him to give him credit when it's due.

The close range shot was harder than it looked. He had a split second to hit it and didn't have the time to get his head over the ball. I don't think many would've buried it.

Exactly - was going to say something very similar.

He simply didn't have time to get over the top of the bouncing ball and if he'd waited for it to come down he clearly would have had the defence all over it. Must admit my first reaction was head in the hands but when I saw the replay it was obvious he was stretching to get to it and the ball was basically at knee height when he reached it. Very difficult to keep down.

If he plays like he did yesterday every week we'd never have that problem with him....but you just know he's probably gonna get destroyed by wengers under 14 captain on wednesday!!

I'm quick to give him abuse when he deserves it, but he played very well yesterday and deserves credit for his performance.

The thing with someone like Lucas is, if the team plays well around him, it will raise his performance, if the team doesn't play well, he can't change the game and unfortunately for him because he plays in the middle of the park his mistakes are notable and he therefore gets singled out.

People shouldn't get overly carried away with 'he bossed the midfield against the champions' lark, yes, he played well, he deserves credit. But it should also be noted that Utd played the wrong midfield yesterday. Lucas always struggles against a more physical opponent, Anderson or Fletcher yesterday would have made a huge difference for them.

Although I'm really not trying to take anything away from Lucas' performance.
