How many times has he driven through a midfield and laid on a goal before?

Please try and exclude any games when the opposition have 10 men, are losing, and it is in the 5th minute of stoppage time when they are all in our half pushing for an equaliser

Just got in...

Lucas played extremely well today and was as influential in our build up as in defence. MOTM? No, but only a few players were above him.

The thing is, he's always played pretty well when the team's functioning as a whole. He needs to show this level of performance when the team's not performing as we need - only then will his critics begin to back off.

Best player on the pitch.

The end.
Hold on a minute....

apart from the terrible shot into row Z and the 5 fouls in dangerous positions he gave away in the second half he played well, that was probably his best ever game for us and he wasn't shit by any stretch but mash was the boss in midfield, kuyt ran his fucking legs off and Yossi was excellent.

You must be high on adrenaline Ryan.
Not specifically at you but lets figure out where the "Masch was MOM" theory has come from. He was utterly anonymous for the first 25 minutes other than a foul and losing possession. When the mancs started to come into the game more he became more of a presence and he was excellent for 20 minutes and again for 20 minutes in the 2nd half when they were having a good period.

The comparison is Lucas was very good in that first 25, constantly keeping us moving, getting forward and finding players in space. When the mancs got themselves into the game he continued to be heavily invovled but now on the defensive side. By no stretch is he as good a DM as Mascherano but he was a big influence on the game in attack and defence which is something Mascher wasn't and, largely speaking, is incapable of.

I don't think anyone got close to Yossi but on the next rung down it was Lucas and Carra with maybe Mascher at their level or just below.

As Brendan says this doesn't make him a good player it just means he's capable of being a good player. But today he was good.... very good and didn't drift out of the game for long periods.
Masher was excellent for "20 minutes in the 2nd half when they were having a good period."

Erm, isn't that the point?
You may have to clarify the "point", George. Or maybe I should.

My point is that while Mascher was very good for periods today it was only when they were dominating. Lucas was very good through the match; he was very good defensively (not at Maschers level but still very good) and very good when we had the ball while Mascher disappeared into anonimity during these periods.

Both played their part in a tremendously satisfying win but Mascher wasn't some match dominating presence; he did well in the periods where he was capable while Lucas was able to do well through the entire match.

Definitely
He wasnt. Mascherano was. But he had a good game.
Spot on. Lucas did not embarrass him or the club, but Mascher nullified Schole and Carrick, he is immense! He will be some player in 2-3 yrs time.
Bit if an overreaction there, Ryan. He was superb today but no way was he the best player on the pitch. I would give that to the Blond God.

Their defenders were absolutely shit scared of him. Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand - you could see the fear in their eyes when he got the ball. They were psychologically scarred by the run around he gave them in the previous meeting. I have never seen a Liverpool player do that to those cunts.
I have, but admittedly not for a few years. The last one I remember was a certain Michael Owen, who regularly made a monkey out of Jaap Stam at a time when the rest of their defence wasn't up to much anyway. It seems we do well against ManUre when he's involved. 8)

I can't help it if you can't enjoy a good performance.

I can. He wasn't shit. Great.

Get out the fucking bunting and start the music

I notice there hasn't been many pro-Lucas thread for the last two months or so

Reason?

He *has* been shit

I'm not sure you can enjoy it really but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

I don't think there have been many threads eulogising players in the last two months as *we have* been shit.

Today we weren't and that includes Lucas.

if he had performed better in our previous games, we could have lost this afternoon and been a lot better off than we are. its like letting someone twist a knife into your back, and your supposed to forgive them because they stopped?

Total bollocks - he wasn't even the best central midfielder.

However, he wasn't totally arse. He battled throughout the whole game with fair means and foul. He didn't give the ball away too much and had the energy to provide an outlet and the simple through pass to Ngog in the 95th minute.

On the negative side he should have done better with the shot from the corner, he seemed incapable of a single forward pass and gave away two pretty needless freekicks in very dangerous positions.

On the plus side he didn't continually rant at the ref and dive in on the keeper 5 mins into stoppage time whilst already on a yellow. :-X

So there we have it, a general agreement that Lucas 'wasn't totally shit' against United

Well done Lucas Leiva!
He gave away far too many free kicks in good positions to be considered man of the match.
Indeed.

I turned to my mate and said his name should be "foul by" ... as in foul by Lucas. The whole team played well today more or less, Lucas did to, but he was not IMO motm.
He's a cunt though apparently.
I thought he was MOTM mate, and then Mascher stepped it up and a couple of other players did, but over all, I don't think we can look beyond the forum's favourite whipping boy, he ran the midfield for most of the game.

Brilliant.

One of them WAS class and looked pretty much the spent force. Their midfield pairing gave ours a very easy run out. That is what i saw from where i'm sitting.

Well we were still playing the 'Champions' first choice midfield, and he still had to have the balls to take it to 'em, and he did, so..

Mark, i'm happy he put in a good performance. Don't get me wrong. But we have been here before. He has previously played well when teams let him play his game. He has bullied his share of oldies such as Scholes, Nicky Butt (Well that about it...) but he has not followed up on that and i doubt he is going to this time too. I'm not going to get my hopes up...

This is not the league for him. But if he is sat in there as a back up, i have no complaints. He can never be first choice....we need so much more. This ain't the new dawn.

But i doubt you were saying so either....so i will toe your line and say that he had a good game...without tempering it down.

Lucas did indeed have a good game today.

credit where it's due, he was very goo today. There was a rive and purpose to his play that usually isn't there and also a belief in himself.

MOTM - no, but if he should stay at that level and he may make it as a footballer.

Lucas made 3 or 4 very good penetrating runs today. He was outstanding and I'd gladly admit being to hasty to give up on the kid if he continues along this sense. The fact that he raises his game under more pressure is a very good attribute.

The kid did ok today, particularly defensively. Not good enough to start every week, but he can offer something to the squad. He is nowhere near as bad as Brendan or Rage make out, but certainly no world beater either.

I thought Lucas did well today.
He won the physical battle and ran and ran and ran.
I still don't think it is too much to expect that your central midfielder is able to pass the ball forwards now and again.

So how come, after 'taking on the best midfield the Champions had to offer' he was so fucking shit against Spurs, Villa, Chelsea, Fiorentina etc etc ad infinitum?

Hmmm?

Lucas could walk over water and you'd still say 'But he can't even swim, that useless cunt.'

He really had a good game today and did his fair share to beat United. You should be happy about it.

Didn't Lucas rob Scholes near the halfway line, surge forward and play a through ball to Kuyt who fired wide?

I'm pretty sure he did this prior to our first goal. These things go unnoticed if you're one-eyed.

He did well today, I hope he can maintain this level of performance until Aquilani debuts.

Yes, he did do well. Maybe even MOTM today.
I acknowledged that in my first post.
But it is not 'one-eyed' to suggest that Lucas, in general, plays the ball sideways or backwards most of the time.
His passing is limited.
