Lucas Leiva - Wonderman.

"Another strong, silent type who prefers to let his football do his talking. He is known around the club as Ivanhoe — that’s his middle name and the lads take great delight in reminding him of it."
Michael Owen on Emile I. Heskey, 2001

"I will tell you this, though, if Liverpool were to come in with £7m and we get double that offer from Barcelona, I will taxi him over to Spain myself. Whatever, it will be Emile Heskey's choice in the end."
Martin O' Neill on Emile Heskey, 1999

"I know he does not always like being on the left, but people know how to defend against him now when he's up front."
Houllier on Heskey, 2002

So the stats say that Lucas is good. Most Liverpool supporters on fan forums say he's good.

Australia's most handsome footballer, Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Alan Kennedy, Rafa Benitez, Kenny Dalglish...

All wrong. They don't quite have an eye for this, you see?
You forgot successive Brazil managers.
I love this "well other people pick him , so he must be good".

Yeah right, he was part of the worst ever Brazil performance at the Copa America tournament they brought him too, they were knocked out in the QF's for the first time ever. And he's been picked to play in the worst Liverpool teams for about 15 years.

Is it just a coincidence that both of the teams he plays for are historically bad when he plays ?

I'm saying we should pick and chose when he plays, are you saying he is just rubbish and shouldn't play at all?

I'm saying the fact that Liverpool and Brazil picks him doesn't make him good, it makes them bad.

Nice tactic Neil. Deflect this thread onto Ross. He hates Lucas and will carry the fight. 😉

I quite like Lucas, as a player and a person but couldn't be arsed getting involved in this one folks. I'll wait for next weeks thread.

What Liverpool teams have you been watching? It's far from the worst Liverpool teams in 15 years.

One of the best signs someone is on shaky ground is when they make pitiful comments to try and support the argument.

Worst LFC team in 15 years - utterly ridiculous. Where were you from '95 to 98? Where were you in '03 and '04? I guess that means Alonso was part of one of the worst teams in LFC history too? Somehow Lucas managed to play 25 games plus 11 subs in the worst LFC team in 15 years - finishing 2nd in the premier league.

I can't wait to see him play in a half decent team.

Seriously, some of the statements you come up with make a mockery of your background and training Ross.

Again, I think Lucas does his 'job' competently enough I just think he shouldn't be selected for certain home games and the Norwich debacle hasn't changed my mind in that regard. I can 'understand' the people who want him out of the team altogether though (even I personally don't, especially away from home) because they have seen the holding midfield job go from didi to xabi to mash to Lucas, that big drop in quality regardless of how much you rate Lucas.

Watch how we play Neil, there have been tonnes of games of late where we're getting away with it leaving holes infront of the defence, Mata cut in from their left for the goal and found acres of space to run into to create the goal. Obviously Lucas singlehandedly can't cut out everything but it's fair to point out that our lack of a natural DM is partly responsible for this, on another day Everton could have had a field day against us for the same reason. Now against Norwich we had the same issue ten fold, against NORWICH. Who would you put in the middle? The only other option is Henderson who so far has shied away from practically every challenge that's been there to go for, while for all of Charlie Adam's ability to play a pass, he doesn't have the legs to cover the ground. We'd get murdered. People argue that Gerrard can do the role, now he's older and he has to preserve more energy, again this is just theorising because his natural game is to roam and we've found out enough times that when he does this in a central two, we suffer because the other midfielder has more ground to cover.

I know we 'can' be more expressive at home and there are times in the past when we've been too reserved, but that's down to things like playing a flat side with no pace, or lacking players with invention, or maybe worrying too much about the opposition strengths when picking certain players (like Kuyt for defensive cover on the right, or playing or more defensive minded fullback). A perfect example? We played Djimi Traore at home against Olym in that infamous match on the way to Istanbul, with Riise in midfield ahead of him to quell the threat of Rivaldo (who went on to score a freekick anyway). We took Djimi off at half time, reverted Riise to left back and it changed the face of the game, we then threw on a runner in Pongolle and went for broke.

I sometimes think your longing for more technical players in key defensive positions clouds your judgement over defensive responsibility. People say, "well it was only Robbie Savage and whoever", it doesn't work like that in reality.

You can appoint a Champion, ie, Skully, to defend your honour, or something.

this weekend will be all about lucas, if he has a stormer then you'll get loads of 'and THAT is why we have lucas' and if he has a mare you'll get a load of 'what the fuck is the point of lucas?'. there will be no inbetween.
