Liverpool v Newcastle Match Thread

My bad. 9 games. So 7 points to make up with 9 games left. Still a tall order for me. They've Spurs coming up too.

Agreed it's a big ask but considering we could very well lose next weekend and still have to play them away it's not as cut and dry as it looks.

Beat Utd next week though and I think it's done which would be superb with a CL to win.

Not having to worry about the league would be superb while the other teams City aside would have one eye on their weekend fixtures every game.

A really solid win here - I know all but one Liverpool fan are happy with a workman-like, seemingly 'easy' win.

Karius is really playing well - I wonder if he's playing us out of the Alisson move?
Salah constantly gets open in the box - it's insane.
Lascelles should have been sent off - horrible missed call.

I hope we learned from Arsenal last week how not to start a 'won' European home game ... Kill Porto off in the 1st half and then onward to Manure.

The 9th game is against Chelsea, that was his point.

I'll be honest it wasn't ha.

Anyways, our last 4 home games we couldn't really ask for much better...Watford Bournemouth Stoke Brighton. Palace Everton West Brom away...got to be looking at a decent return there.

"On paper" it's obvs United and Chelsea away which are our toughest games but we can't complain about those other 7. West Brom will probably be down by the time we go there as well.

Ha! I thought you meant we had 8 games to play bar the Chelsea one. Carry on...

We have a decent run in, but still a lot of games to be played.
A win for City tomorrow would be most welcome.

I’m sure it’s an age thing but I don’t think I’ve ever felt as cold at a match as I did today.

Good, solid win though. We weren’t at our best but that was the sort of game we’ve previously struggled to win.

Karius is actually starting to look like a goalkeeper and I thought VVD and Henderson were very good today.

It looked like we were in 2nd gear the whole time. I don’t know many times we’ve won comfortably playing like that under Klopp but doesn’t feel like a lot.

It’s hard to know how much is down to us and how much it was a case of the opposition being poor but we seem more solid at the moment. I don’t feel like we need to score 4 to secure a win as much as I used to.

Hoping it’s a sign of genuine progression and not just a purple patch. Or maybe it’s just the No Moreno effect.

Disagree about TAA. Whilst he has stepped up in the last few games. I've noticed he has a tendancy to get done by tricky pacey wingers. I know he played well since Porto match and today admitedly he had the Newcastle winger in his pocket. But I still find Gomez and Clyne more steadier choices when we are playing better opposition. When he bulks up I see him competing with The Ox.

Lovely win in a largely shit game.
Henderson and Oxlade-chamberlain were fucking brilliant.

VVD and Lovren looks a really good pairing
Virgil making Lovren look like the player we bought.

And Karius. Wow. Continuing his Phoenix from the flames resurrection.

The VVD Robertson Karius axis has added a whole lot of solidity to the backline. VVD being the most important among the three. The importance of a calming presence in our backline is huge.

We need to put Modo on suicide watch. Benitez lost and Hendo had a great game. This could push him over the edge.

I really like Ox's attitude. The comradery he shows towards his teammates is exemplary

Yeah... indeed....

He was never gonna be a new Gerarrd was he and he did look shite in his first game for us way back but because all the plaudits have been rolling in to our front three not a lot has been said for the Ox.

He got a good engine is quick and tenacious enough and he has played some fucking looooooovely through balls recently as well....

Yeah...

It’s almost as if he wants to go to that World Cup thingymajig...

I agree in that he seems more steady than Gomez but he didn't have a particularly good game today. He kept doing aimless punts up the wing. At the beginning of the second half he had the option to pass back to Karius but instead lumped it to a Newcastle player which put us under pressure. I didn't think he offered much attacking wise either.

To a degree though Newcastle were also quite sneaky in the pressing they were doing themselves TAA did hoof the ball a few times but that said, we didn’t always need a Brazil 1970 moment and there is a certain amount of breathing space that a hoof affords you. Some of his pacey covering runs were exceptional yesterday, I think we’ve got a player there...

Fucking Firmino man.
Every game get does something utterly beautiful.
Something that makes you smile and remember that you love football.

The way he scooped that ball into his run and the assist he plays for Mane.

It looks so fucking simple, like anyone could do it, but the complexity to take that ball (technically) the way he does, run between the lines as he does facing a full defence, and know when to release it to Mane and not do what every other player would do and spray it wide, and then....and then the fucking ability to play that pass through that gap at the perfect pace and timing.

It's absolutely a work of art.
It was a lovely passing move in a fairly turgid game (thanks to a good effort from Rafa) but some moments you know make you glad you watched regardless.

Roberto is making us a joy to watch.
I know Salah gets the plaudits most weeks and rightly so, wonderful scoring record. But I doubt he could do some of the wonderful things Firmino does. In fact I doubt almost anyone could.

He was fairly poor first half by his standards, fucked up a couple of simple lay offs & passes, gave it away a few times & lost a couple of 50/50 challenges.

The difference it made to our pace of attack & turnover of the ball when he came out & played to his usual standard in the second half was remarkable.

It was also a little worrying, in that if he doesn't or can't play, is that the impact it will always have? If so we won't be able to cope with this absence very well at all.

On reflection I am happy the ref didn't give the pen (or free kick) and send yer man off. Would have made no difference to the result, a, possible, minor impact on our GD, and would have left a Newcastle man suspended when they still have blue shite arse & chelski to play
