I really don't see how anyone looks at that pace, the ability on the ball, coupled with being good in one on ones defensively and says he'd be great if we played him in a position where we can't let him go forward with the ball much.

You can, you just have to play him more disciplined. It didn't do Ferdinand any harm, he still went on runs forward and bagged a few goals from open play too.

I tend to agree but it will also depend on the players around him. Ramos found himself at RB for similar'ish reasons but eventually found his way to CB.

alan hansen?

He won't get as exposed as a full back compared to centre. Let him develop until he's a bossman and replaces skrrel eventually

If he bagged three goals from open play I'd be amazed

You're looking a gift horse in the mouth here people.

We have a guy on his way to being a top fullback. (that was never the case with any examples people have mentioned)

Why would you change it?

Is a full back less valuable than a centre half at the top level?

i had thought the time would come when Rodgers would take him out of the team for a spell 'to give the boy a rest'. Presumably however the inevitable suspensions will take care of that. What a prospect he is though.

Carlisle would be an obvious chance to rest him.

He's 18 yrs old. No way he'll be moved inside for 3-4 years at least, and then only if he shows promise in training.

The lad's played three PL games. To confine him to a career as full-back, centre-back or to map out a timetable for his evolution from one to the other is unnecessarily premature.

Some people map out their child's life from pregnancy. At least we've given him 18 years to enjoy his youth !

"I think I am a ball-playing centre-back who likes to be physical and has got a bit of pace. I'd like to say I am a leader as well," Gomez told Liverpool's official website upon his arrival at the club.

"I made my debut and started playing at first last season at right-back. I really enjoyed it there because I like to get forward. But I definitely see myself as a centre-back, I feel more comfortable there and enjoy it there. So in the long-term, hopefully I'll be at centre-back."

So last season he was a full back, this season he's a full back.

But because he thinks he's a centre half you think he should be one?

Do many lads that big play long term as full backs these days?

I can only think of ivanovic who has done it for a few seasons now

I was thinking a completely different thing instead.

Other than Dion Dublin, have there been any notable CB who later played as a forward/striker before ?

I seem to remember Chris Sutton being a centre half when he was younger? Or am I imagining it that?
