Is Rodgers scared to drop 2 CB's?

Just seems like ever since we bought Sakho he has tried everything to fit in all 4 CB's to the detriment of the team. Even yesterday with agger injured so we went 3 at the back. Why can't he just bench 2 and play the other two? He's doing these experiments and they're not working at all. Why change a winning formula? Before he messed around we looked solid.

With johnson injured it would be enrique, agger(or sakho if agger is injured), toure(skrtel when toure is injured) and kelly(wisdom as backup).

I think this would be more relevant if we didnt have any injuries mate.
Its been forced upon us to have so many CBs in the starting eleven

Is it? Sakho played left back against Southampton, yet Enrique came on? Was he not fit enough to start for us?

Yesterday we played wing backs. I would have prefered a back four yesterday.

Did we even play a proper 3-5-2 yesterday?

Skrtel and Sakho were both pretty central, and Toure played primarily as a right-back. Henderson played more like a right midfielder than a wing-back.

Enrique did see a lot of the ball in offensive positions, but did little with it.

Moses playing central was the only real distinction I thought yesterday from what would have been our usual set-up.

Well he made Agger vice-captain but then watched Toure become our best defender, spent 18M on Sakho then Skrtel played himself back into the form that made him our former best centre back.
So my guess is Brendan hasn't got a clue what to do with them, hence he plays all of the fuckers.

Yep, bingo.

I'd play Skrtel and Toure as the back two, and find 2 full-backs who aren't shite.

Yeah, I'd play Skrtel and Toure as well. Give Sakho a go at RB and hope he becomes the new Thuram.
Can Llori play LB?

Jesus Larry, Sakho at RB? No way man. I can't see him performing there ala Johnson in the past. Sakho seems to be predominately left legged and I think he would struggle at RB.

Rodgers needs to make a decision who to play. I'd play Skrtel and Agger or Toure or Agger. I don't mind actually as long as all four don't play.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has set his side the minimum target of remaining in the league's top six until he can bring in January reinforcements.

The Reds topped the league with a 100 per cent record after three matches but a draw at Swansea and defeat at home to Southampton last weekend have seen them drop to fifth.

They are still only two points adrift of leaders Arsenal but with an unbeaten Everton just a point behind and champions Manchester United a further two back in eighth there is increased competition for space at the top.

Rodgers hopes to use their exit from the Capital One Cup at the hands of United on Wednesday as a positive for the next three months.

"Now we can only concentrate on the league up until Christmas," he said.

"So we have to make sure we stay up in that top six in the league and keep fighting and hopefully we can reinforce in January.

"I think the players have made an excellent start. We were flat and subdued at the weekend and we couldn't get going - part of that was because of the players we had available."

Liverpool have been hampered by injuries in recent weeks with the absence of playmaker Philippe Coutinho, sidelined after a shoulder operation until the end of October, and right-back Glen Johnson (ankle) out making a considerable difference.

With left-back Jose Enrique's knee complaint requiring careful management Rodgers has had to experiment in an attempt to find a solution.

Fielding four centre-backs against Southampton back-fired but a 3-5-2 formation at Old Trafford had more success and it is an option the Reds boss is willing to try again.

"It is something that has been forced upon us in terms of players that we have available," said the Northern Ireland international. [Eh???]

"I have never in my life played four centre-halves in any game and anyone who knows me and my work knows that is not how I operate.

"But when you have no choice that is what you have to do. I try to get as many attackers on the field as I can.

"I just felt that system (three at the back) suited the players we had and I thought the players suited the system well and we got numbers forward.

"If we have to play that system again for a period of time until players are fit - we obviously have to work on it more - but the players are comfortable in.

"It gives us three players to dominate midfield and two strikers up front (Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez) who are top strikers in the league and still keeps us secure at the back."

Yesterday we played wing backs. I would have prefered a back four yesterday.

Enrique had a knee injury though and wasnt fit enough to start.
If Kelly/Cissokho were fit we wouldnt have started with 4 CBs

Also had Johnson and Coutinho fit then too.
Even when we were winning before, weren't overly convincing especially in the second half and weren't creating nowhere near enough chances anyway.
Don't think it's all Sahko's fault, I thought he looked much better against Utd and hopefully is adjusting and in the long term will be better for it.

Mate, Agger's the worst of the lot. Thing is, Skrtel and Toure are the easiest to drop if Brendan is feeling particularly spineless. So, yeah, we'll probably see Agger and Sakho at some point.

Rodgers said after the Southampton match that Enrique was struggling with a minor knee injury and Kelly still wasn't fit to play.

Wisom at RB? Enrique still ended up playing.

Ah, don't mind me, i just don't want to see us playing four CB's if we have other options.

re Macca's post - Rodgers is starting to sound like fucking Benitez, he's spent big already. I know it'll take time, but moaning now about hanging around until January for reinforcements is a bit rich, given he's got a few new players sat on the bench not getting a look in.

As for Glen, well not really, Johnson is injured, we have no other credible natural fit right back, and as he said, Enrique is carrying an injury. Toure has played right back plenty of times for City and Arsenal. We've played one game with four centre halves, untypical though for you to get carried away on a point based on an isolated game.

I'd almost rather we didn't have this depth at centre back, sometimes it seems we'd prefer to play centre halves at fullback than give young lads a chance who naturally play as a fullback. Arsenal have thrown in Jenkinson, Swansea have thrown in Davies, the jury is still out on Jenkinson but they've kept the attacking balance of their side by playing people who are comfortable with the attacking aspects of playing fullback.

The obvious problem with this is quality of the young full backs we have at the club, the last one to get a go I think was Flanagan who eventually had a crap game and bombed out of the side. The wingback approach might be the solution, we can throw Henderson or even someone like Sterling in at right back who will give a decent account of themselves going forward but then we end up with 3 centre halves, do we really need that? We shouldn't be scared to play 4-4-2 if that's what the situation calls for and give young fullbacks a go.

In summary... we should give Ryan McLaughlin a game at right back because I like him 👍

Yup and it's not the first time either. I've got time for the guy but quotes like that really really irritate me.

Show some fucking conviction in your summer activity and the team.

I'd really just like to see someone new get a crack at RB and see how it goes. Illori, McLaughlin, Kelly, whomever. With Johnson being mediocre/hurt, and his contract coming up, I'd like to see what internal options we already have.

I agree to some extent. It isnt neccessary to talk about it in September. But at the same time we missed out on our 3 top attacking targets which is now hurting us badly with Coutinho out.
It has left a gaping hole in the squad and I wont blame Rodgers for it.

Still, talk about it in December not now..

If only we hadn't sold Stewie Downing, he could have played at LB.

We should continue to play the 3-5-2 adopted at OT, particularly when Johnson and Cissokho are fit.

Mignolet
Toure Sakho Agger
Johnson Gerrard Coutinho Lucas Cissokho
Suarez Sturridge

until then:

Mignolet
Toure Sakho Agger
Henderson Gerrard Moses Lucas Enrique
Suarez Sturridge

As Rodgers said:"It gives us three players to dominate midfield, gives us the two strikers up front that are arguably up there with the top strikers in the league, and it still keeps us secure at the back. If we need to play it again, I think we can play it well."
