How do we replace him?

With the news that Stevie is off this summer, how do we replace him?
His performances on the pitch has been on a downward spiral but its a huge task to restructure our midfield. He's a big presence for the club outside the pitch which we'll surley miss.

Buy young with potential or splash the cash on a older more experienced player?

According to half the fucking bellends on this site, it's a blessing that he's leaving, so I guess we don't have to...

Fucking twats. Don't deserve a legend like that on 'their' team.

What bollocks, Whaddapie. It's ok to acknowledge that Gerrard's decline means that he likely doesn't merit a starting berth in the side without you resorting to hyperbolic bullshit.

It's likely the right time for both Steven and the club to start the long process of moving on. He's not being done any favours being shoehorned into a DM role, and the team is not benefitting from him struggling to play the role whilst in decline.

That in no way detracts from the fact that he is the greatest player I've seen in the flesh pull on the shirt. A veritable legendary midfielder of this club greatly responsible for a large percentage of the 'success' we've enjoyed during his career.

There's no need to get all melodramatic any time anyone dares to evaluate his current effectiveness. It doesn't mean they're wiping out his history.

Clearly because he was great for us in the past we should play him until he's ready for the bench

More often than not it's about the player than the club for some people

We already have. We can play well without him. We need leaders in the team though and some boss scouse players

Whapp the gerrard of 2004-2010 will never be replaced, however the gerrard of 2012-2015 will be replaceable and improved on. That's not a slight on Gerrard or a show of disrespect just a case of Father Time catching up with one of greatest ever players.

He dragged the club from mediocrity of the 90s.
His goals and performances were key to almost every trophy we've won over the last 15 years.
People are entitled to be nostalgic and selective.

Not one single person on this site or indeed any Liverpool fan I have ever spoken to disputes Gerrard's immense talent or contribution. We all love him, we all agree he's a legend of the club and most of us have him in our top three (or higher) all time Liverpool players. However some of us have been ready to accept that his performances haven't been up to the level required (and some way off the standards he himself has set). Legendary status isn't enough to warrant a first team place...if it was let's hope The King, Barnes, Fowler, Rush, Souness et al still have their boots. Come to that I've seen far worse abuse aimed at Kenny Dalglish on this site than I have for Steven Gerrard but that's another story.

So let's have our disagreements about his place or otherwise in the team but let's not turn it into some sort of superfan v splitter argument because that's just fucking pathetic.

It's obvious that you hate him so your just using that last line as a stick to beat people with.

It's also obvious that Rodgers doesn't have the bottle to drop him, at a detriment to our style of play.

My feelings about him are irrelevant on this. At his peak he probably was the best player in the world. However now he's not and he's trying to play like he still is.

It's sad to see it end like this, with him going elsewhere rather than graciously stepping aside and coming in to the squad when we need him.

Slating people for saying that yeah, maybe he should go if he doesn't fancy the bench, is hardly fucking fair is it?

People can be nostalgic, but when it's detrimental to the present, why is it treated with such disdain?

Gerrard (based on form) doesn't deserve to start for us this season. Is that wrong to say?

We've seen some fantastic performances without him, particularly with Lucas/Allen/Henderson in the middle, sometimes with Coutinho in there too. We have Can, Lallana and maybe Lazar now also.

We might need another body in that position for depth but imo I don't think we need to go out and buy another Gerrard, we have some tidy midfielders that might grow a (bigger) pair when Steven leaves.

Carragher on twitter...it's the right decision and this morning my timeline was full of 'why is he playing' and now it's full of 'don't let him go'.

@Carra23: Leaving or retiring is a great confidence booster, this morning my timeline was full of "whys Gerrard starting" now it's "Gerrard best ever"

Yes, because I've been a fan since the 1970's... Obviously, it's only about the player, not the team. Some of the disrespect some of our "supporters" have show perhaps our greatest ever player this season has made me puke. Of course he's declined - Doesn't warrant some of the shite some cunts on here have thrown his way in recent months.

So because he's a legend for us he's allowed a pass? Shall we just let him start because he was magnificent 6 years ago?

I've called him all sorts because what matters is the here and now. The time for looking at the whole career for a player is when they retire. Then you can praise and be in awe. No doubt I'll forget his performances this season in a few years and still get misty eyed over his peak.

Right now he doesn't look anywhere near the level we need in the position he's in. If he's unwilling to sit on the bench (which is what I feel it is) then yeah, let him have his retirement in The Lying Rag.

What style of play?
People are going on about this Swansea performance like we beat Bayern Munich.
Yeah so what if he doesn't want to sit on the bench.
He loves playing the game and through all the personal shit in his life he always gave 1 million percent for the jersey no matter what some people like to think.
It's a sad way to end when your own fans want you gone.

Fucking hell then you wonder why people are getting wound up.

Do you think he gave '1 million per cent for the jersey' today? Really?

The pressing part of our play

The man doesn't press because he can't press any more. Whether it's his groin that he's terrified of breaking again or what, but he's not been anywhere near the same player since then.

No one is saying beating Swansea was amazing, but it was one of the few games this season where we had some of our zip back.

Personally I think he's always been about himself and the adulation, and we've just gone along for the ride. But that's my feeling.

Kuyt always gave a million percent. Every game. As did Suarez. I've seen many a game where Gerrard has been disinterested, so let's not start this.

He's a club legend and every bit as good a player as the league will ever see. If he doesn't want to sit on the bench then fine. He wants to play every week then fine. At the moment he isn't good enough to be a guaranteed starter every week here.

Fine, since his groin injury.

Last season he was an assisting machine because we had 2 20 goal a season strikers. He was a defensively liability last season as much as this season.

Alright, has he given '1 million per cent for the jersey' in every game you've seen him play? Or are you just throwing hyperbole around to demonstrate your superfan credentials?
I'm thinking it's all too raw for realism right now lefty.

Oh shut the fuck up with the superfan bollix.
Because I don't want to see it end like it has makes me a superfan.
Yeah well in you.

You stood up for Ballotelli about a thousand times on here so I don't think you should start about this pressing game you adore.
