It was called the Black Death because it made your extremities and large parts of your body rot and go black. As in the colour. The colour black.
.

At risk of repeating myself, it was not called the black death at the time. It was called the pestilence. The black death was a much later appellation for the bubonic plague.

I humbly bow to your superior knowledge of 14th century pandemics, however, despite my foolish errors in the correct naming of medieval plagues at the time, I'm more interested in the general narrative about the pejorative association with the word "black", which I'm entirely sure has had negative associations with death, evil, rot, PESTILENCE, Hades, mourning and countless others for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, well before any halfwit decided to take mass offence on the behalf of the every single Person Of Colour.

Probably since cavemen worked out that you could see danger better in the daytime, plus many creatures hunted at night, thus making nighttime, when it was....black....best spent in your cave, hopefully with a fire, if that had been invented yet.

In any case it was called the Black Death because of its effects, so not actually anything at all to do with the word black and its associative connotations, which makes it a poor example for me to use in the first instance. Damn.

I don't mind Henderson as a captain really (though obviously in an ideal world it'd be nice to have a world class option). He seems pretty vocal and has grown in stature during his time at Liverpool.

The problem is that if he's not in the side regularly due to his injuries and / or can't regain his former level, it's probably worth reconsidering his role not just as a captain but in the squad.

I suppose another factor to consider is that if there are cliques in the dressing room it'd be good to have someone who is good at bridging between them or at the very least is more connected to the better players.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer as Klopp will have the opportunity to name a new captain if he wants to.

I will admit that I was never a big fan of Henderson, and always said that he was only ever going to be - at very best a 7/10 player. But over time, he's proved the value of a player who can actually deliver a 7/10 - or higher - level of performance on a regular basis, and he has added a little more craft and guile to his game, with some quality assists and goals, plus a welcome bit of steel.

I think most of the issues some people have with him are still there: he's not a real game-changer or leader, and he still struggles to really impose his will on a game, like the best players can do. So he isn't ever going to be a Gerrard or Souness or McMahon. But at his best he is still an asset.

The problem is that his physicality, running power and mobility are almost entirely the basis of his footballing quality. If this recurring heel issue/ injury reduces those qualities permanently, he isn't worthy of a place in the team, never mind as captain.

I agree with most of that. As I said, ideally we'd have a world class option to captain the team and yeah, if his injury problems don't clear up his place in the team needs re-examining.

I'm less bothered whether the captain is a game changer Gerrard type though.

Me neither. Although ideally you want a captain that the opposition fear and/or respect

We'll have a new captain come opening day of next season.

If so, it will be a player who isn't at Liverpool yet, because the very fact Henderson is Captain means there's fuck all genuine competition. I mean, other than maybe Skrtel, who else is there? Sakho? Lucas? Can? Lallana? As if.

Dunno about respect but I can definitely see the opposition fear Flanagan if he regains his form.

aye. That's what I meant. Think Klopp will bring in a midfield general who could also be captain. Or a keeper. Or I'm just dreaming and hoping and dreaming some more. I'd happily see half the entire squad fucked off.

Yes, I got all that stuff about the negative connotations of blackness. Can't argue with any of that.
