I got overly excited about Elliot last time round when he looked really exciting but it ended up petering out with him looking too slow to be playing wide. However he was very young at that stage and it seems we were sticking him out wide because that’s one of the safer positions to bring youngsters into rather than it being his actual position in the longer term.
I do think he has something but the frequency at which talented young guys fail gives me doubts.
He played right wing back for half of the 2005 CL final.
I always had this controversial belief that he would have served the team best at left midfield. Particularly in the Houllier years. Him in a relatively free role cutting in onto his right foot, behind Houllier's 2 strikers would have been better than playing him in central midfield.
Houllier was onto something. I remember Benitez never entirely liked him at central midfield. It was only when Gerrard finally moved to the number 10 position behind Torres that Benitez's system finally started looking like a proper machine.
I always wanted Rodgers to use Gerrard behind the striker, kinda like a Totti free role, rather than playing deep. I thought he could've prolonged his career there.
I always thought that he should have switched to centre half in his last few years, his legs had gone by then as was proven on a number of important occassions. He certainly had the ability to switch and a captain at CB is always ideal. I think his ego was his main flaw.

It was, but that's why I actually don't think he'd ultimately have made a good CB. It prevented him from having the positional discipline you'd need in that position. I have a vague memory of Rafa saying something to that effect when explaining why he played Stevie wide right for a spell.
Elliot's had a very decent spell in the Championship and has shone this pre-season. It's too early to say he's ready for this level, but he certainly deserves the opportunities to prove himself. He's passed every test we have given him to date. Him, Jones and Trent are the long-term future of this squad, so development opportunities this year will be highly important. The talent is all there to shine.
