Grazie Il Re di Roma

My favourite player in the past 25 years.
An absolute legend.

For me he is comfortably the greatest Italian footballer of all time.

And that he turned down Madrid and Barcelona and United to stay in Rome and spend his whole career at his boyhood club elevates him more than most for me.
He would have won hundreds of trophies at those clubs but stayed where he was adored.

Most appearances ever for Roma
Most goals ever for Roma
Second highest goalscorer in Italian football history, and probably created more goals than any other player in history for any club.

The finest passer of a football ive ever seen live. Vision that I have never seen from any other player bar Zidane.

Just a born genius.

Legend.

Im actually a little bit broken hearted.

I think its a travesty that this guy isnt talked about up with the Zidanes, Maradonas, Messis etc as the greatest to play the game.

I was fortunate enough to see him live in Euro 2004. Not his best moment ever but he saw things light years before anyone else on the pitch.

Grazi Totti.
*wipes away tears*

Then you instantly drop in my estimations when it comes to assessing footballers.
Because he is phenomenal.

It's a personal taste, mate – I acknowledge he's a legend, of course. But whenever I saw him for 90 minutes (not highlights), I was never impressed much. People do adore him in Rome though; I've been to a couple of restaurants that literally look like churches of Totti – I've never seen something like this done for other players in any other country.

I'm with Rurik, I never found him very exciting to watch.

I'd rather watch Del Piero or Zola.

This. Given that many good judges here and elsewhere praise Totti to the skies I'm quite prepared to believe I've been unlucky in the games I've watched, but I've never been fully convinced by what I've seen.

For me he's the footballers footballer. Not one for the most eye catching displays (although he was more than capable), but he could exploit space and was always available. He was more of an entity in the final third. Wherever you wanted to pass the pall, he would be there.

His intelligence was just incredible.

I'd say that's fair though, he's in the second tier of great players. You couldn't put him up with the likes of Messi and Zidane, he was never on that level

His goalscoring record is all the more impressive when you consider that he's more of a second striker / number 10 than an actual striker who led the line.
