England Team: Hart, Johnson, Baines, Gerrard (c), Cahill, Jagielka, Sturridge, Rooney, Welbeck, Henderson, Lallana

Sterling, Flanno and Lambert on the bench

Welbeck over Sterling is a joke.

Jesus christ. What a joke Uncle Woy is. Leaving out arguably the most talented teenage midfielder in europe for a someone who has struggled to perform in a struggling team.

Erm ... This is Hodgson we're talking about-- why is anybody surprised? Also hear that had Miilner not been ill, Lallana wouldn't have started.

Welbeck will be playing in the lower tier of the Premier League or the Championship eventually. I don't know how he's fooled people for this long.

Glad to see Welbeck starting ahead of Sterling... hopefully we'll see Sturridge, Gerrard, Henderson, Johnson (and Lallana?) on the bench soon enough as well.

Johnson needs to be sold asap.

I think this is England's best squad for 20 odd years, if Roy can play the right players there's no reason they can't reach the semi`s or even the final.

Fuck no, Euro 96 squad was better. World cup 98 squad was better even the 2006 squad with Gerrard at his peak was better.

Johnson was a fucking liability. Totally inconsistent throughout and just doesn't seem bothered, but was very alive for the 1st goal. Gets caught in possession way too much.

Rooney was very meh as was Welbeck who could do with fucking passing it after beating a man.

It was important just to get a game under the belt and not lose or have anyone injured, so job done. Welbeck will not start ahead of Sterling at the WC. That start for Welbeck was encouragement. It's a squad game and it's good to get all involved.

I saw Johnson waddling around by the left corner after an attack at one point, no rush to get back the useless cunt. 'Defender' my fucking arse, he couldn't defend a sandcastle

I guess we'll see. There seems to be a much better team spirit going into this one.

I disagree about the quality of this squad, but for me the main difference between now and then is that we had coaches who were brave enough to trust their convictions and construct the best *team*, and leave out anyone who didn't fit. Those 96 and 98 teams were on a completely different level to what any England team has produced for about 10 years now.

I've basically lost all patience with Rooney. I know he still scores goals, but I haven't actually seen him play well for us for years. I'd like us to at least try playing without him. There's genuinely nothing to lose: if we go into that group with a safety-first approach I guarantee we'll be knocked out. I'd go:

--------Gerrard-----Wilshere

Lallana-------Barkley------Sterling

----------------Sturridge

Barkley will be the Owen of this tournament, we'll be crying out for him in the end, he'll play a game and be brilliant and it'll be too late.
