Yeah, but, as he showed in the 86 Cup Final, could run the entire match from that centre circle position
Oh yeah, he did indeed. I only saw him 'live' in the flesh for one season, & he was huugggge, but not til stevie came through & then we got Alonso did I see a player who could play every range of pass like he could.

To be fair, he was bigger after he did time; he was always large, but those weeks behind bars seemed to add to his bulk

I think that is more to do with Klopp than Wijnaldum, he is a lot more attacking for Holland.

In the games hes given license to get forward he shows some great skill. If you want to rewatch an example look at the 2-0 win over Utd from earlier this season. Klopp switched his tactics and only allowed one full back to push on at a time with Wjinaldum filling the space on the opposite side. He had a fantastic goal ruled out for a marginal (but correct offside) and put Mané through one on one after a great piece of skill to leave Maguire for dead in the middle of the park.

Doesn't make him "our best midfielder". I liked big Jan and he might get in the squad for the All-Time XI, but he wouldn't get a game ahead of Stevie G or Souness.

I just don't hold him in that high regard unfortunately, never have.

When you say most important players at LFC I think of Alisson, Van Dijk, Mo, Mane, both full backs...Wijnaldum for me is nearer the bottom of the list.

And there are players out there younger than 29 who we could invest and build a long term career for here.

you clearly know fuck all.

It'a almost as if some Reds need to have a bogeyman to have a go at. A few used to target Hendo but he's blown that out of the water, so Gini's up instead. 😕

Partially agree. He was light years behind both Gini and Hendo in terms of quality and the reason he got picked so often was that we were very, very ordinary overall, but he was never as bad as his worst critics said.

At his best, Gini is clearly one of the best midfielders in the world. I don't think that is hyperbole. He does go missing sometimes, leading to the unfortunate moniker Brendan bestowed on him, which is magnified by the fact that his midfield partners arent ultra-dynamic in attack. But he is capable of some truly world class performances and fits how Klopp defines our midfield very well.

My Man U supporting friends are still shocked that Van Gaal who managed Wijnaldum at PSV and the Dutch national team, didn't bring him to Man U. Instead he went and got Daley Blind. Lol.
