Source?

Was kind of hoping we'd be able to cash in and recoup a good amount for a younger, fresher additional to the squad but nevermind.

Yeah as if it's as just as easy as that. One of our most important players. Hope he signs up.

Oh and he's 29, not 39.

I just don't hold him in that high regard unfortunately, never have.

When you say most important players at LFC I think of Alisson, Van Dijk, Mo, Mane, both full backs...Wijnaldum for me is nearer the bottom of the list.

And there are players out there younger than 29 who we could invest and build a long term career for here.

For me, I'm not arsed what midfielders turn up as they're all interchangeable and all at about the same level. Hence not really concerned if any of them in a singular sense were to leave the club or sign a new contract (en masse would be a different matter).
If any Mane, Salah, Virgil, Trent, Robbo, Alisson are out, then I start to worry.

Has anyone ever been bothered when Wijnaldum hasn't started a game but the rest of the team was fully fit?

Exactly.

"We missed Wijnaldum today" isn't a phrase you'll have heard often during his time here.

Would hate to lose all of Milner, Lallana & Gini from the squad so makes sense to keep Gini who the manager rates, steps up in big games and knows our style inside out.

He's quality and what he does is very understated. I don't think I've seen many players as difficult to shrug off the ball as he is. I really like him. I do think we could do with a playmaker, but that's besides the point. The lads we have in midfield are quality.

and lallana get a short term contract.

[article]
The news comes as another Liverpool midfielder, Adam Lallana, confirmed he has agreed a short-term contract extension in order to finish the season at Anfield.
The 32-year-old’s current contract was due to expire on 30 June but the England international has agreed to stay on and be part of Liverpool’s expected title celebrations.
Lallana told Liverpool’s official website: “I am really pleased to have the chance to finish this season – it means a lot to me and my family. Of course, one of the big personal positives about committing to this short-term extension is that I will now get to say goodbye to the people who mean so much to me in the right way.
“The gaffer has been different class and we’ve had an honest conversation about what my role will be in the remaining weeks. I want to contribute in the most positive way possible that helps him and the team, not just for the remaining matches of this season – but also what they’ll need to consider for next.
“I’m totally at peace with what that looks and feels like, and I know the role I’ll be playing for this team will help in what’s going to be an extraordinary period – the likes of which none of us have ever experienced.”

i say this is a great gesture.

Bizarre how many people are writing off Wjinaldum as some journeyman we can easily replace. Hes not one of out most eye catching players but hes come on in massive strides over the last 2 years and hes a key component in how our team plays. Happy to see him stay for another couple of seasons.

Someone on twitter ran the stats a while ago and showed that when Gini has been available to be picked, he has been circa 95%+ of the time by Klopp. He won't let him leave if he can stop it.

Yes but you also have to look at the availability of our other players in his position.

Lallana and Ox both out for best part of 2 years.

Fab & Hendo both in and out the side too from injuries. Naby seems like 95% of the time is unavailable.

Gini is the only 1 who hasn't picked up a serious injury.

He's stunningly well rounded, he can do almost any job on the pitch (a trait of many players who come through the Dutch league), but can do them at an incredibly high standard.

Like all our midfield, he doesn't stand out as an absolute star player, but is key to the way we play. You list no midfielders in your 'key to the way we play' list, but try to replace them with midfielders from a different team & none of those players would be anywhere near as effective.

Whilst that's all probably true maybe I am being a bit selfish and want more of a baller in midfield like a Pogba or Kante.

I was excited by the signing at first as he was a brilliant player as an attacking midfielder but then we converted him into a more deeper role which he struggled with at first.

I will always look to the Barca game and think why he doesn't perform more like that, late arriving into the box getting on the end of crosses/loose defending.,

I think that is more to do with Klopp than Wijnaldum, he is a lot more attacking for Holland.

Haven't heard that said about one of our midfield since the great Jan Molby

Yeah, but, as he showed in the 86 Cup Final, could run the entire match from that centre circle position

Ha. The only player I've ever seen who could play an entire match without moving more than a couple of foot outside the centre circle.

Which was even more impressive when you consider he was almost half the size of that centre circle.

and had probably drunk enough beer before the game to fill in a pool the size of the center circle!

Imo our best midfielder. Just look at the teams who were ready to steal him from us.
