Could Glen Johnson be our Gareth Bale

Both originally fullbacks far better at going forwards than they are at defending.

Johnson was played at RW at Pompey and it was that form that we signed him on.

Lets stick him on the wing for the rest of the season and see how he gets on.

I don't remember Gareth Bale being poor at defending.

I do.

There was a reason why he sat on the bench for most of the last two seasons, and why Harry chose Essou-Ekotto ahead of him; cos he was shite at left-back.

Haha pls don't make me laugh. Glenjo, our Bale ? haha

No disrespect to anyone (incl Glen) but....

Bale was IMMENSE last night. IMMENSE.
Tore the entire Inter team to shreds singlehandedly.
And he's a bloody fullback !

I can't think of a better leftback's performance like last night's.
Not even Roberto Carlos in his prime could emulate that. Well, I can't recall of one match for now.

Wow another Welsh wizard!

Gigg's successor?

Why is that Wales produces such wingers (once in a while) that will be noticed?

he can be our gareth bale as soon as he gives up on the big macs and the spliffs

So Glens got the munchies? Surely he would fail his drugs tests if true.

Gareth Bale is still only 21? I thought he was well older by now.

At school his teacher used to make him play one touch football with his right foot, just to make it fair on the other boys.

Would solve our problems but hes probably going to go to Man U or City for what, 35 million quid?

Was bale not another one we were in for but decided it was too much for a youngster. Bit like the Walcott

Johnson would be better playing RW in a 4-4-2 than at right back, that much is quite obvious at this stage. If that's what you mean about him being our Bale, then I'd agree. But he#ll probably not be as good as Bale has been this season.

All the reports suggest Bale is hard working, down to earth, teetotal and totally dedicated to his football. Given the shape Magic turned up in this year I'm not sure we could say the same about him.

He's not a fullback anymore. That's the point.

I must say I find this recent bogue of lambasting Glenjo a bit strange. Or maybe I don't.

He's had a shitty start to the season, but he's still a quality footballer. He came off the back of a World Cup and started the season poorly, but Christ he wasn't the only one in that regard.

He's had an ever-changing back four to contend with, utterly gay tactics from his manager, and no Dirk in front of him for the most part. They've all played a part.

This time last year he was being lauded as one of the best full-backs in the World, and right now - he's a hapless overweight chump?

As ever, the truth lies somwehere in between. I like Glenjo, he'll come good for us.

But not as a fullback

As a fullback.

This 'right-wing' chat is ridiculous.

He's a poor defender though and we've spunked £17m on him, so it's logical to at least try it, especially when (outwide) we're struggling for pace and the ability to get in behind the defence.

It's also worth noting...

In Europe he's hardly played at fullback this season (he's hardly played has he?) and in the last couple of games he's been out. Is it any coincidence that that's where our best defensive form has been?

I don't think he's that bad a defender, it's just his concentration and decision making that lets him down. If he keeps his focus, he usually has no problems whatsoever.

But, in lapses he just looks lost and we usually conceed aswell when that happens.

I don't think we would get our money back, so I'd rather someone tried to teach him how to fucking concentrate on his defensive duties when that is neccassary. A big bad example is at home against Arsenal, were he tries to kick the ball of Arshavin to win a throw in deep in our half instead of kicking the fuck upfield or to a throw in in their half. He misses, they get a throw in deep in our half and scores.

If not one of our 149 coaches can make him a better defender then they're a waste of money tbh.

He isn't a winger though, and shouldn't play there. He did it for a while for Pompey, and wasn't very good.

He gets caught in alot of games, he's only really effective when we're in possession, defenders need to be able to read the game and anticipate danger as much as anything. His decision making and concentration isn't just poor it's consistently poor.

If not one of our many coaches can make him a better defender (nor Pompey's or Chelsea's for that matter) then doesn't that say more about the player?

Redknapp said. "They don't need to sell him. It's a well-run club. I gave Gareth four days off last week because I thought he needed a break and I told him to go abroad. He did. He went to Cardiff to his mum's.

Is Cardiff considered abroad? Taking the mickey or Englishman's insularity?

As for Johnson, it is possible that he could be better utilised with a change in tactics (as 'attacking fullback Spidey' keeps ranting about).

But he is looking off the pace, a bit tubby, and he's off form.

NO tactics can change that.

No, I don't think so.

We signed him because he was a good RB who has a tendency to get forward, which is where he plays for England

Rafa probably thought it would help orovide another attacking outlet to our static right flank (which had the decent, but limited Kuyt as a mainstay)

The idea that he was signed to play RW would make sense if he ever played at RW for us.

Maybe Mark, but he's only 26 years old. And should be hitting his prime now. The fact that he's English also makes me a bit more sceptical in replacing him.

If someone hasn't figured out how to defend by the age of 26, they never will. Lets make the most of his pace, ability to beat players and his ability to shoot off both feet - all qualities you'd associate with a good winger- by playing him further forward.

He needs to get fully fit first however

Yeah, but it would be easier teach him that than how to defend properly.
[/quote]

To paraphrase you

I you can't cross by 26...
