Clyne

Did anyone notice Clyne being more assertive in attacking positions on Wednesday? I've always thought that his attacking instincts were his only flaw for us. His pace is invaluable at times back there. He doesn't hold back from a tackle and is always an outlet for us. However, he had a habit of galloping forward with the ball only to stop, check his run and get rid asap. It was refreshing to see him march forward with the ball and drive at Arsenal at times. He's been a great signing over all and one of the first names on the team sheet.

NO PUNS PLEASE.

I don't actually think Clyne's attacking instincts as such are the problem - they never were at Palace or Southampton, and I was looking forward to him bringing them with him when we signed him. He arrived at a time when Rodgers was struggling to keep his job, my bet is he was told to wind his neck in attacking-wise and play it safe, and I strongly suspect that left him pretty confused about what to do when. Hopefully what we saw this week were signs that Klopp is freeing him up to play his normal game again.

I like him and he's a good player, but I feel that he was producing more in the final 3rd before we bought him, maybe I'm imagining that.

Yeah I was expecting him to join in more with our attacks but from the get go he seemed a bit unsure of himself in the final third.

But then again, I think he only had one assist last season for Southampton. He also scored against us I think though. Anyway, that's beside the point, I think he's a very good player and it's nice to see him trusting himself a bit more as he gallops up the pitch.

So many players always looked more impressive playing against us than playing for us! Benteke is a prime example. Playing for Villa against us he was a beast. Playing for us he is a nine-stone weakling.

Its exactly the type of signing that we need more of.

A good player at the right time for the right price.

A lot of United fan were disgusted they didn't get him. Darmian was later signed which obviously appeased them for a while, but it looks like we got the better deal.

I really like him. He's the best attacking full back we've had since Glen Johnson was in his prime.

His final ball/cross is his weakest point. He gets into the right areas, he uses his pace at the right time, he overlaps well, he'll cover when he needs to, & is strong & assertive when defending, but far too often the cross or final pass is lacking.

That is about the easiest facet of a full backs game to sort out though, so bodes well for the future.

Shit at crossing. How hard is it for these guys to learn how to cross a ball properly? Pull them back for 30 mins after training to practice crosses. Even if they add 1 or 2 assists a year it will be worth it.

I was expecting a bit more from him going forward this season as he hasn't contributed that much in the opposition half really, though the other night he played much better. I'd like to see him go on the outside more often as he tends to cut inside far too much. Defensively i haven't got any complaints and he's often had to put up with wide players in front of him that don't help him that much when we're defending. One worry is his ability in the air as similar to Moreno he's vulnerable at the far post.

His form seems to dip every few games, he started really well.

Think we We need some cover at RB (when flanno back?) as he has played at rb for most of our games

He's been brilliant. Fantastic signing. One of the best RBs in the league.
I remember discussing this with a Manc mate who thought they were getting the better deal with Darmian and that they "dropped" their interest in Clyne because of it.
Well, after a few games Darmian proved to be not that good. Clyne however is boss.

Compared to Glen fucking Johnson though its no contest

Johnson at his best was a better attacker, he could pick out a great pass or cut in and score; Clyne is yet to show this. But it's very refreshing to have someone consistently solid at RB after years of infuriating inconsistency, bordering on lack of professionalism.

Yeah, it's not, cos Johnson was well better.

I hate the revisionism about Johnson because he declined.

Glen Johnson at his best was fucking marvellous & easily the best attacking full back in the league.
That first season Johnson wasn't just a superb attaching right back he was one of our most creative attackers full stop. He was sublime. Shame he went downhill and never got back there. I doubt Clyne will ever reach his heights going forward but I'm more than happy to accept that if he keeps up his level of consistency in defense

I had a right go at the way he seems to be so indecisive when in the final third - but against Arsenal, he went forward with purpose and like he knew what he wanted to do. I think it was his best performance for us.

Deffo thick as a Gurkhas foreskin, but I'm loving him and totally expected to. One who will blossom under Klopp coaching if even a handful of the brain cells are functioning

I'm talking about the version he replaced though, not 2009 when he was boss
