When the CBs are passing back to the keeper (I'd be interested in seeing any stats if anyone knows them) it's usually because they have come under too much pressure and don't feel like they have a safe outlet. This is probably down to the MF and especially Gerrard, maybe it's his mobility or the mobility of the defence and midfield in general, maybe a combination of factors, whatever it is if the space were being created then the options would be there and the temptation to pass it all the way back to Ming diminished.

Funny you should mention that bit about kicking into touch (though I'm sure you are jesting) - I often think Ming is better off doing that than just lumping it downfield, turnovers often happen at throw-ins (at least it's more likely than a ball lumped up to a 4:2 or 3:1 defence vs attack situation.

I agree with Ming. He has his weak areas but I always feel confident he can do something when facing a difficult situation. I do think that Valdes could be very valuable signing though, a previously top quality GK teaching Ming aspects of keeping that Achterberg seems oblivious of.

Sorry, but I don't mean that at all. Of course they're right to do that in those circumstances. But my point is about midfielders, not CBs, when they're on top and in control in the other half, with, say, Sterling moving intelligently, Sturridge in space, etc etc - several viable, relatively straightforward, positive passing options - and we suddenly go all the way back, and Mignolet then belts it back up and we lose possession. I thought I'd made that clear. THAT is the time when I find what we do really exasperating. I'm obviously not advocating ignoring the keeper when under pressure. That would be idiotic.

If Valdes can teach Ming how to play the ball confidently with his feet and read when to come out and when to stay between the sticks then the transfer will be a massive success.

To be fair, in a long career, all keepers are going to have some bad mistakes and comical moments, and these are probably few and far between. It's quite a funny clip though, probably made by a Real Madrid fan.

Ah yes. I agree. I too find it exasperating when that happens, I'd rather they make an attempt to find those runners and lose possession than go all the way back again, at least it would be lost in a relatively 'safe' area of the field and on occasions it would come off and lead to a goal.

Mignolet is not a very good keeper.

It seems more likely that Ming will be sold if Valdes comes unless he's happy to sit on the bench.

In the first part of that he looks colour blind. Then just shit. Finally makes up for it by cleaning Pique's clock. Never a bad thing.

Oh yeah of course, but then, how many games does Jones actually play? I'm in the GKMacca school of thinking when it comes to sub 'keepers.

That may depend on whether he has to stay there for any length of time, and what effect that has on his form and his overall outlook. Jones is OK with being a stand-in and IMO hasn't let us down from there when he's been called upon.

I would expect Valdes to become the first choice fairly quickly. I'd guess they'd then reassess things next summer in terms of moving Mignolet on and buying a long term replacement.

I've never hidden my belief that we can do a lot better than Mignolet. Only time will tell if Valdes has the fitness and the desire to be number one.

Valdes is overrated, Mignolet is underrated. I'm thinking we'll play whomever is on form, bit like Real last year.

Always good to have options and assets.

I think most on here are doing Ming a disservice. Think he is a really good keeper overall and can work on distribution and command. It is like fawning over a fullback for his forward runs when he cant defend to save his life. Lets get priorities in order.

And our Simon didnt cost us as many points as he saved last year.

That said I favour bringing in Valdes nonetheless as backup and competition. Let the better keeper have the job.
