Mistake by Chelsea too, in that Cole is better and younger
[/quote]Exactly. Give Cole an extra Million a year on a 4 year deal and save the fucking bother.
Given that it's unlikely Rafa will be given his spends he'd be crazy to let any player leave. We should just be dealing in player swaps.

Unless we are in such dire financial straits that we have to get rid of a high earner of the wage bill in order to free up funds to pay weekly wages for an incomming freebie?

Why do we have to be in "dire financial straits" for that to be a priority ?
We spent 100.5m on wages last season, which was about 60% of turnover. That's pretty much the high point of what is recommended as a wages to turnover ratio.
Our problem is that we have no financial flexibility, we're at our max in terms of wages because of all the big money contracts handed out to players who aren't living up to their end of the bargain. We've got two choices - continue as we are, hamstrung by bad contracts and unable to be as competitive as we like or we could shift them all save some money and then splash out next year on younger cheaper talent.
And that's essentially what Broughton's off the record comments about Torres were getting at a few days ago. We don't need to pay a 140k a week to a striker so we can finish seventh.
