Yossi to Chelsea for £6m

Chelsea have paved the way for Joe Cole's departure from Stamford Bridge by formalising their interest in the Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun, with the Israeli confident a transfer can be completed over the next week.

An opening bid of £4m is understood to have been knocked back by the Merseyside club, though they have offered Chelsea encouragement that an improved offer of about £6m will secure the 30-year-old. Carlo Ancelotti is keen to sign the Israel international after talks with Cole's representative over a new deal reached an impasse, with the midfielder now expected to leave under freedom of contract next month.

Tottenham Hotspur, with a potential Champions League campaign ahead, remain favourites to secure Cole under the Bosman ruling, ending his seven-year stay in south-west London since a £6.6m move from West Ham United. The 28-year-old had hoped to gain an increase on his weekly wage to £100,000, but Chelsea are set upon restructuring financially and did not offer him improved terms.

Cole has not had a regular first?team place at the Double winners under Ancelotti, and Benayoun will have to accept life as a squad player as well. His own fortunes at Liverpool dipped somewhat towards the end of last season to mirror those of the team, with his relationship with the manager, Rafael Benítez, steadily deteriorating to the point where Liverpool effectively sanctioned his departure in the closed season.

The move is surprising given that Benayoun, who had also attracted tentative interest from his former club West Ham United and Spurs, is two years older than Cole in a squad that is already considered to be ageing, though he does have pedigree in the Premier League.

The Israeli anticipates the completion of his move to Stamford Bridge over the next few days having indicated last week while on international duty that Chelsea were keen to sign him. "Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool," he said. "Chelsea will have to pay some £6m, but I believe that, in the end, I'll be moving there."

Im quite shocked by the fee, £6m, thats what Birmingham just paid Utd for that clown Foster, I would have thought Yossi's value had increased since he joined us for £6.5m, how on earth could he be worth less now than when we bought him

Mistake by Chelsea too, in that Cole is better and younger
Exactly. Give Cole an extra Million a year on a 4 year deal and save the fucking bother.

Given that it's unlikely Rafa will be given his spends he'd be crazy to let any player leave. We should just be dealing in player swaps.

Unless we are in such dire financial straits that we have to get rid of a high earner of the wage bill in order to free up funds to pay weekly wages for an incomming freebie?

Definitely, unless Cole is completely set against staying.
Plus at West Ham he played in an fa cup final. Here he........well he scored against Havant AND Waterlooville.

I think Cole is already nailed on for Spurs, he wants to stay in London and he wants CL football.

Yossi's a fine squad player, Cole is better but his injury record is dire so you can see where Chelsea are coming from, Yossi would be a good short term solution for them.

I was actually thinking of Jovanovic >🙁

Same here. And I don't see how his age comes into it. I don't recall Ferguson being so reasonable when we wanted to sign the ageing Heinze.

Disagree. It's a squad game. We need both.

lol.. It did cross my mind while typing that. He's exactly the sort of player Wenger would go for, skill in abundance and not really a natural wide player.
Im more worried about our first team being shite.
Cole and a good forWard and a LB goes a long way to improving that. If we effectively swap yossi for cole we get a younger better player for no cost that would improve the first team and leave us with JUST 2 massive problem areas.

We're not going to get Cole, Oncy. He's lahves Lahndahn.

This is a huge mistake IMO. I don't want us to sell Yossi. Especially not to Chelsea. Especially not for £6m. And especially not as Rafa will probably spend that money on an 18-year-old CB who will never actually play a game for our first team.

Or just another over-priced, mid-paced mediocre Spaniard.
I know. I made a joke. Then jj questioned the validity of the argument posited in the joke. So I defended said 'theoretical' position.
He's going Arsenal, I already said that.

It's Tottenham who keep getting mentioned in the media. And the Mancs, but like Bunny I don't see him leaving the smoke.
Bluster mate, it's all bluster. He's going to Arsenal.

I'd only sell if we KNOW we can get our hands on someone capable like Arda Turan instead. Or Cole. Maybe even Simao - although I don't rate him highly he's obviously better suited for the left than Yossi ever will be.

That kind of player talentwise, otherwise it's too big a risk no matter how frustrating it can be to watch the good lad Yossi when he's not at his best.

If Pacheco's actually any good... we'll not miss Benayoun one bit.

Re: Yossi to Chelsea for £6m

Disagree. They bring different things to the table. Pacheco (a) doesn't play wide as well and (b) hasn't got the same experience. I rate the lad but no way is he a direct replacement for Yossi.
Surely the only reason we'll know 9a) for sure and address (b) is by giving him a proper run on the pitch - which he won't get with Benayoun, etc at the club.

I quite like Yossi but equally I wouldn't be shedding too many tears if we moved him on. We have Maxi & Kuyt for the right, Gerrard & Acqualini for the centre & Jovanovic for the left. We need someone else for the left and we can throw Pacheco into the mix as well - not to mention some of the other youngsters that could come through.

I wonder if Gerrard will be more suited to a deeper role as his legs age, kind of like Barnes in his 30s. Gerrard could fill the hole Xabi left this season.

This would also free up a space for a more natural forward player to slot in behind Torres. Like a better version of Yossi. Peter Beardsley would be good playing off Torres.
