A piece of cake couldn't possibly use that. Idiot.

That sunny summers afternoon in 2004 when the first of the Spanish amigo's arrived seems like a long time ago now, looking all tanned and smiley, they emerged onto the Anfield pitch. No one at that moment, not even the most blindly enthusiastic of fans, could have for a second predicted how that season would end. Memories of that night are forever imprinted in the minds of every Reds fan: 25th May 2005. The night that cemented the names of every player who wore the Liverpool shirt that night in the minds of Reds everywhere. Whilst years from now we might have to ponder on a couple of the names to remember them to pass on to our kids, once that I know I'll never forget is Xabi Alonso, and his part in that amazing night.

But whilst many may see that as his defining moment as a Red, I'll remember him for so much more. I thank you Xabi, not just for that goal, or even those goals against Newcastle and Luton or even for your spectacular 40 yard balls that you often pinged across the field. I thank you for every little unnoticed pass you played, he distribution and steady play you provided in the middle of the park, and for the character you've been, never once in five years have you complained.

YNWA, even if I am the only one that has a nice word to say about you.

I had to give up afte your first line cos my toes were curling up in front of the laptop...

"That sunny summers afternoon in 2004 when the first of the Spanish amigo's arrived seems like a long time ago now, looking all tanned and smiley, they emerged onto the Anfield pitch..."

Such a load of soupy fucking chuff. With extra cream on top.

That's one of the worst sentences I've ever read.

Which teletubby?

the big purple dickhead.

What can I say, I'm was feeling overly sentimental and they were showing clips of when he and Garcia first signed on SSN. And it was sunny and they were smiley...and tanned.

Skully goes from loving me to hating me in the space of two posts anyway.

🙂

The anger of the Skullflower sometimes confuses me.

Thank you Xabi for some great football & the Champions League Cup. Bye & Good Luck at Real.

Merge?

Fuck Xabi Alonso.

He chose to leave when we were on the verge of winning the League for the first time in ages so fuck him.

I only hope the cunt looks back like Owen surely does after he left before we won the Champions League...

It's a relief the ginger-bearded misanthrope has gone. I'm sick of clips of him looking bitter, miserable and aloof. I've got a mirror for that.

It's good that there is a tribute thread even if it is filled with lots of people not wishing to pay any tribute.

His signing ushered in a new era and after a few years of Biscan (bless him), Diao and the likes, it was a welcome relief to see a proper footballer being brought into the club. He's given five years of quality service during which he's been one of the lynchpins of the side winning the CL and the FA Cup and leaves us with a 20M profit.

I am gutted that he's leaving as I rate him more than many seem to, but I guess we just have to look onwards and upwards. Hopefully the team will evolve and be stronger for it.

If he were going to another team, I'd wish him well, but I badly want Real to fail... so... go Barca.

Ken- most people aren't cold fucking robots like you. We're going through the process of dealing with rejection, and the healthy means of doing so is to hate the bitch that jilted you. When the healing process has worked its magic, then one can begin to look back with nostalgia.

Its NO DOUBT that we had this comming as we as a club fucked you over last year Xabi. However I am proud of the answers you gave before you finally left. You will be sorely missed and would have been a legend! Remember that when you look at kaka and greasy boy fighting it off for being the hero over there!

I would've thought the massive Alonso thread fulfilled everyones need to vent.

Absolute rubbish. The man is a professional footballer but ignored clear instructions to turn up for a flight to a game abroad, this after (by his high standards) a distinctly mediocre season. He's not the first player to have been required to put his job ahead of family commitments. His manager would have been failing in his duty if he DIDN'T try to sell him after that little lot. This "fucked him over" cr@p is just an excuse to cover his tracks.

6 out of 10, Xabi. You're a great player and we've got the dickens of a job on to replace you, but the way you've piddled about over leaving is a blot on your record. I'll always be grateful to you for what you did for us when you were at your best, but don't let the door hit your @rse on the way out.

How did he piddle about leaving? I don't get that attitude at all.

By all accounts he made it clear to Rafa months ago that he wanted to leave and then left it up to the two clubs to sort it out. That's what players are supposed to do. When he saw that things were hitting a brick wall, he put in a transfer and gave up his loyalty payment in order to help things along. That is something we never saw Barry do...

Are you saying he should have handed in a transfer request on June 1st?

God I wish this 'we were horrid to him' canard was put to bed. Clubs with limited budgets sometimes find themselves pushed into really hard decisions in terms of how best to raise funds for transfers. This often forces them to consider selling one or two of their best players. That's all that happened. No cruelty. No mendacity. No vendetta. No betrayal. Get over it.

Well, to be honest I think it started off as people just stating that he was aggrieved at the way he was prostituted around Europe last season to in a way excuse him for wanting to leave and then the counter-arguments of "how dare he even feel aggrieved" started to get thrown back and it all get rather exaggerated and silly.

As you say, a club sometimes has to consider his options and likewise for players. Let's just leave it at that.

I'd rather not drag it all up, but it's fair to say as soon as the season finished (and as the season had wore on) Rafa constantly expressed his pleasure at seeing Alonso perform well and repeatedly said that he wanted him to stay because he was very valuable to us. Alonso kept schtum throughout all this leaving the club and the fans in the dark. He's also done good by the club though by handing in a transfer request.

Shit happens in football, sentiment has been shown when needed and the required ruthlessness has been used too. It's just unfortunate that it's all amounted to the one thing, Xabi's departure. I think both parties have been victims of the unpredictable face of football, but lets face it, a move to Madrid and £30m is a fucking big softener too.

We'll both move on.

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel. We're losing a quite brilliant midfielder, and I think this'll be a case of a lot of people only realising what we had when he's gone.

Oh,we've always known.

Even Mancs are sending texts about it, they know how important he was to us.

We just didn't have a choice about it once he wanted to leave.

[quote author=mark1975 link=topic=35060.msg917872#msg917872 date=1249409780]
I think it's easy to wish someone luck, without wishing luck to the club he's going to.

He's never struck me as a money grabber, I think he's just taking his chance to play for Madrid and alongside Kaka and Ronaldo. We have our own World Class players too, but this whole affair starting from last Summer has been a topsy turvy affair with blame spread fairly evenly between the Alonso camp, Madrid's and Rafa's.

He was one of my favourite players and I'll miss seeing his composure and his ability to play the ball from distance (while scoring the odd goal). Always struck me as a gent and a bit of a quiet man, and I think he'll be sorely missed.

So glass raised to Xabi, thanks for the memories and I hope you have your personal moments of brilliance to look back upon.

YNWA.
