Can we afford starting him until season's end? or do his 'excellent displays' (I think Rodgers is saying these things for the 'right' reasons) leave him in the line up?

Seasons over, so for sentiment and as a thank you to Gerrard, he should start them.

Call it a defeatist attitude, but we have no chance of fourth.

I'd use this as an opportunity to bring some of the youngsters in. I wouldn't bother playing anyone who isn't going to feature for us next season. What's the point? Gerrard should play off the bench and should maybe start the last game to be brought off.

I agree.

Simply cos I really, really, don't want us to play in the Europa League next season.

This bothers me..

We wont win the league next season.. so I would like another chance at winning a trophy

Europa League is another opportunity to win a trophy.. and it comes with champions League qualification for the winner

Finishing in the top 4 will be even harder next season with the riches the Top 4 will receive..

So the Europa League for me will be a welcome distraction.. and if Rodgers really is going to stay then he can learn how to get this team playing in europe..

^^ This..

He can start the final game of the season if he really must...

I hate these kind of statistics.

I makes it look like most of our bad results were all down to Gerrard. Sure, he hasn't exactly been setting the stage alight as of late, but the reasons for our poor performances this season goes much deeper than that. There are too many other elements that need to factored in as to what achieved a particular result.

I don't think that's what it's saying - it's saying as a team, we play better when he's not on the pitch (which has happened in other seasons too).

If we had a 62% win record in the league, we'd be in....fifth place. *

*Assuming we turned losses into wins in those games

But that's still not necessarily the case, is it? For example we got a win away to Swansea without Gerrard but we played like shit. That's just one example. There are many other things that need to be factored in such as how well the opposition played etc.

Ok - Gerrard complicates how Rodgers can pick a team. He's an average (at best) DM, and he doesn't add much in the upper third with movement. That means pushing players around to accommodate him and that has led to issues this year. Last year, 2 goalscorers masked the issue (though many complained about it)

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. I'm just saying that it's easy to throw stats like that about. But it doesn't always tell the full story.

Just for the record I've been critical of Gerrard lately as the next person.

If we have a full fit squad there's no way he should start. He showed his head is already out the door against the mancs, and his attitude will be virulent. In any other business he'd be on gardening leave. I wouldn't let him back in Melwood, never mind pick him to play.

When Joe Allen is the other option the answer is yes he should start.
Not that it makes any difference our season is over.

We still have another season before this whole CL Money increase starts to show - those who qualify will get the money from the end of next season, but that doesnt change going into next season. For me that makes next season even more important, we have simply got to make the right moves in the market this summer and ensure that we are more than fighting. City are likely to make wholesale changes so that will present an opportunity for us to hit the ground running.

Even after that shitshow yesterday I am confident that we can take the form we have shown in the league since Christmas into next season.

Clubs will budget for that and the begining of there finacial year

So it will come into play next season

The media really are pathetic. The hacks have spent all season, right up to yesterday, moaning that the club has failed to keep 'Captain Fantastic' and that he's still one of the best midfielders in the country (whilst blatantly ignoring these very stats), and now suddenly they've decided he's completely lost it and deserves a barrage of abuse in the pages of the press. Absolute shitheads the lot of them. As most of us have been noting, sadly, for quite a while, he's been in decline for a couple of seasons, but yesterday he was not match fit and was selfless enough to play in three positions to try to help out a team of fit teammates who couldn't be arsed to fight in a semi-final.

Rest of the season I want Can and Henderson in the middle. Ibe and Sterling either side and Sturridge and lambert up front. Defense preferably Johnson, Sakho, Skrtel and Flanagan.

Can is the new Baros ... gets his head down and can make some lovely runs, but fails to get his head up and make the right pass at the right time, so these runs usually ends up in lost possession and Can way out of position. That IS a problem.

That's totes harsh.

Baros was fucking rubbish. Can is not.
