Well, I think he's already done pretty well; could've been worse - he could've somehow ended up at Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs or Man U when he moved from Hamburg. The horror.

My favourite CB outside the Premier League is Benatia though. Best CB in the world these days next to Kompany.

Played there quite often, especially under Benitez last season.

There aren't too many great CBs in the league I can think of. Terry's always been solid but he barely played last season. Kompany''s the only standout candidate. Vertonghen, Cahill, Koscielny and Skrtel are quite decent, but aren't in the league of Vidic, Carra, Hyypia or a prime Ferdinand. I'd probably take Ivanovic's versatility and reliability over them.

Kompany is a really good CB propbably the best in the PL. Agree with Hansern that Benatia is the best CB in the world at the moment Thiago Silva is immense also Kompany is just behind those two in my opinion, Hummels is up there too.

As if that wasn't weird enough, City still managed to pick him up a few years later for a bargain fee. And ever since he's looked one of the best defenders in the world. Hamburg had finished 3rd (7 points behind champions Munich) and qualified for the CL at the end of the 2005-2006 season, so I suppose they weren't too bad back then when Kompany joined. Apparently he played only 11 games in all competitions for Hamburg in his first season due to an achilles injury, followed by 38 in the second (all comps) in the next season. Some reports say he fell out with management at Hamburg due to his wish to stay involved in the Olympics that overlapped with the start of the Bundesliga season.
