Trent’s new position

The thing is, put a RB there and then we are a midfielder short in a way, I'm not sure if he's so effective then. He's creating goals sure but we are also conceding a lot
Let’s see how it works first as the current solution isn’t sustainable if we want to win the league.

Let's afford Trent the overwhelming freedom that is involved in being a midfielder in our team, or as Thiago put it, we'll teach him how to run.

I don't get it. I can see him doing it when we're dominating possession. Can he do it when we're "suffering." I don't know. Isn't that the nice thing about the way it's currently working?

[article]"If we’re not in good shape and the level of the goalie drops as well, then we would have been completely lost. A lot of moments were really good tonight. But then there are moments when we still need to adapt to the set-up. Trent Alexander-Arnold cannot be everywhere. He cannot be in midfield and the next situation he is directly in the right-back situation.

"That has to be covered by Ibou (Konate). There were a few situations where Ibou was a bit too far away. They could turn and could attack. We have things to improve, definitely, but in a lot of moments it looked really good."[/article]

he is gonna score a couple of long range shots soon
very nice to have someone who can be a threat from outside the box

I'm not really a student of formations and the like but, watching City last night and what they do with John Stones, to me that looks similar to what we're trying with Trent. They seem to move to back 3 and let Stones go anywhere and do what he wants. And to be fair, he does it much better than I'd have thought he would. Am I on the right lines or full of shit?

Yeah they've been doing it for a while. Arsenal with Zinchenko too

It's still so new and untried, which is why I think this "hybrid" system of City and ourselves is working. I do still think that over time smart managers will find a way to counter it. It also places too much importance in one player. Like Trent. What if he's suddenly injured for three months, and we've gone and based our entire system around him? Which is strange for a Klopp team to do, because Klopp's Liverpool has been all about the system first.

he was in a bit of trouble quite often last night
they didn't give him space and closed him down from several angles
that is what it is like in midfield, and I am not fully convinced by this move yet

Thats why we should and will continue with this hybrid RB/CM tactic. He wont move into midfield permanently imho.

I'm torn on it. The hybrid things working but I don't know if it would work against top tier opposition. Like, we'll create, but we'll probably concede 3 as well.

I’m not sure on the position but only thing I know is, this is a different Trent to the lad who seemed not his self to the previous 6 months of the season.
Maybe we are now all allowing Trent a pass on those off defensive lapses or being caught out higher up because now we all had some public PR on the new position he’s playing or maybe he just looks happier and seems to just be more mobile and hungry.
Either way I don’t care, as the commentator put it last night, “sensational free kick from the most sensationalest of talents”…

Let's say we move Trent into midfield.
Would you try playing him as a LCM, pretty much sacrificing his crosses and give him better shooting opportunities?
I think his shooting is underrated. It's not at Gerrard level yet but its damn good.

If the press functions then the rest starts to fall into place.

Trent is a player that shouldnt be limited in how we utilize him. His current hybrid role is perfect.

I agree completely. We should be doing everything in our power to borderline build the team around him. It's just whether it works when the team is less dysfunctional, or in the earlier part of the season against fresher legs

I think the system is flexible and allows us to have different patterns of play and surely the idea is we have a few quality players who are able to play different ways.

We have Nunez who can play up high on the last defenders shoulder (in theory if he figures out the offside rule) Vs Gakpo who can come deep.

Harvey & Curtis are comfortable drifting out wide and attacking from there.

Thiago, like Trent can hit passes from deep.

Robbo gets up and down the left side when Trent holds a more central role - that gives sone great left side overload options.

Diaz can stay out wide or come inside, while Jota, Nunez & Gakpo all offer different things at left forward.

Even when he’s shit - Salah is delivering goals and assists.

Badger-Tits also offers something different in terms of bal progression in midfield.

Add in a few new midfield signings and maybe Doak getting some time and you got all sorts of set ups to exploit.

Maybe young Ramsey or Bradley offer us a more traditional up and down RB to Trent from time to time.

I have no doubt other teams “figure us out” - but figuring us out and stopping us from doing it are two different things (see Salah - he’s been doing the same thing since he joined and no-ones quite managed to stop him).

Besides - if the forward and midfield press is working and we’re retaining possession and improve our passing - there are few teams that can live with us when we’re “on it”.

And yet I think he coped with it admirably. However I don't believe Klopp is going to change formation and that that is the right move.
It would also account for the type of players we seem to be targeting.

Carragher highlighted that last night as well
