Trent’s new position

Did he play well again?
Yes…a little more understated but another classy display. He combines wonderfully with Saka (who tends to make a run as soon as he senses the ball is coming Trent’s way) and benefited from Walker at right back too tonight.

Why are they making out like Gareth initiated this and should take full credit?

That heat map was him all over in the last 10 games of the season, in which he was our MOTM pretty much every game.

Well, to be fair Southgate is actually playing him in midfield - as in a starting position midfielder. Whereas Klopp has kept him as a right back starting position.

Gareth has the luxury of picking Trippier, Walker or James, who we know are far better defenders that Trent so it's a far easier decision to play him from the off in midfield for England.

We saw Trent really blossom when Klopp tweaked his position when in possession, do you really Gareth would be starting Trent there if Klopp hadn't made that move?

Well in fairness to Southgate, he spotted the bleeding obvious over a year ago and said he thought he would try Trent in midfield, he also explained why he doesn't play him at right back, ahead of the likes of Walker, James, etc, because they are much better defenders.

We've been urging Klopp to do this for years and he hasn't, until the hybrid role at the end of last season, so in essence, Southgate did initiate it all. Or rather, he suggested what had been fucking obvious to everyone for ages, while Klopp had spent years watching Trent get rinsed by every half decent attacker.

I do not think that's an entirely fair portrayal. It's not as if Klopp was unaware of or completely dismissive of Trents defensive limitations. How could he be? The argument was always his production in the attacking half more than outweighed his errors leading to goals, and given he has broken nearly all PL records for a fullback it's a strong argument.

This season the balance of the side all went to shit and Trents production from the wide areas nosedived, causing an eventual redesign. But it's fair to say the fullbacks in Klopp's original 433 became far bigger stars than the grunts in the middle of the park, given their effectiveness and attacking licence. Getting Trent into the middle was always going to require a greater shift than just sticking him in the Henderson role, which would have restricted rather than enhanced his talents.

I would say that Klopp could have started this this season with a new system, or found a solution far quicker than he did once it's clear it wasn't working, but I don't think we need to look back on previous years with any regret at Trent being at fullback. It's largely been hugely successful.

Errr, what has Southgate won with Trent in midfield and what has Klopp won whilst playing Trent as right-back?

Southgate left his most creative footballer on the bench and won nothing. So he deserves no credit

Cracking post.

It was obvious to some fans but others would just shut the conversation down and rubbish it.

That’s not the point he was making or at least as I understood it. Southgate just tried much earlier than Klopp to play Alexander Arnold in midfield— reason mainly being he had other players who were better defenders and his system is quite conservative. It also took Klopp much longer to effect any changes (he admitted as much himself) when things were not going the we all wanted with that right side chronically exposed.

By the way, Southgate’s experiment wasn’t a success with Alexander Arnold not sure what he was supposed to do. He was dropped from the team soon thereafter until Klopp’s successful implementation of the switch.

He left him out the last England squad Mark and played him for about 10mins at the World Cup…..where was the thought process there if Gareth allegedly knew he’s this mastermind in midfield? Clearly waited on Klopp to try it out first before Gareth went along with it.

Sorry, not getting behind Gareth or England at all.

Trent looks like a movie star dont he ? Do we all agree hebis the best looking Footballer in England?

Didn't Southgate try Trent in midfield first a few years ago and it was a massive failure?

Wingback maybe, not in midfield.

Gareth doesn’t or hasn’t shied away from Rice - Jude/Phillips partnership since Trent burst on the scene and showed what he could do for a barren run of games.

No he definitely did. Against andorra in 21. set up with hendo and bellingham. Reece james at RB

It didn't work, and Trent went to RB second half

Wouldn’t have surprised me if he went Reece as the RCB in a back 3 and Trent and Trippier wingbacks….how can you not make that work against Andorra ffs. Gareth is useless, the sheep. Anyway I doubt Klopp would’ve even seen that.

I would very much like to see trent at RCM at some point in pre season, ideally with a new DM and next to Ali mac. But if it works well that means we need a RB, as its not fair to bradley to just drop him in, and its not fair to us to drop Gomez in.

Timber would fit the bill and offer us tons of formation possibilities (and cover for Trent)

He absolutely would. When we were linked i was ok with it and willing to overlook the supposed height issue, as he probably wouldn't be playing CB that much. But, alas, i don't think that'll happen.

I hope the club makes me look a cunt and signs thuram and timber
