All of that is fair, John. As long as you remember that the only reason that you're better is because of the size of your population... You'll never "sink to our level", based on that fact alone. But your best years are long behind you now. You'll never contend for another international tournament again. And you're supposed to... We're not.

Size of population means nothing mate - check out Uruguay, Greece (won something major in the last decade!), Portugal etc

When a country has 10+ times the population of a neighbour, they'll be better the vast, vast majority of the time. Greece are the exception that proves the rule.

Tell that to China and India!

I'm not saying anything against you, I just fucking hate that saying.

How the fuck can an exception prove a rule? An exception doesn't prove a rule, it makes a mockery of it.

Believe it or not, I completely agree, mate - As I wrote it, I almost added "although I really do not understand this cliché..!"

Greece has 11 million people, Ireland has 4.5', Bad comparison. Double the size

Uruguay is a fair comparison. 3.3m population. It could be argued that they are having their day in The Lying Rag, that other countries have very occasionally. Ireland reached the QF of the World Cup in their heyday - Uruquay reached the SF. Uruquay won the cup in 1930 and 1950. Ireland won the Presidency of the League of Nations.

Uruquay won the Copa America 15 times, we've beaten England in Stuttgart in European Championships in 1988. Same thing in terms of national excitement levels.

Whad, contrary to popular opinion I don't "hate" the Irish, Welsh or Scots. It's just amused me down the years that many people ive met from those places have both a healthy and unhealthy dislike for England.

So yes I ham it up on here at times, but really it's like a mirror reflection of what I've experienced in general. I'm not stupid enough (yet!!) to think that all people from those places dislike England.

Anyway you can say we will never compete again but I'm hardly going to accept the opinion of an Irishman about England to be objective

Last world cup:

Argentina vs Uruguay
Ghana vs Nigeria
Pakistan vs Iran
North Korea vs China

Football is not Ireland's first game, I think that has to be considered.

Heard today that Gus Poyet was interviewed for the job.

Really don't know what that proves, Avy... Yes, there are a couple of upsets in every tournament, but over the course of time the big boys are usually always there or there abouts, while the smaller nations take turns to be the feel-good, Cinderella story of that particular summer. Every dog has it's day - We did in 88 & 90 - but the majority of the time, the major powers win out, and part of that is down to population. Not all of it, but part.
