I've come around to the idea that we need a few world class players.
Just a notion though.

No

Moet on its own does not have a hard t, however if you give it the full name of Moet et Chandon then the "t" becomes hard because of the French rule of elision whereby a t followed by a vowel (even in a subsequent word) is hardened

Absolutely right. It actually wasn't I who said otherwise, it was Brendan - the poster late of this parish, not the LFC manager. The original Dutch name would sound the "t" but would be pronounced "moot", not "Mo-ett".

They'd never do that after the way he left the international set-up as a player, would they?

The smoke signals would seem to suggest the job is MON's to lose anyway. How's his wife's health these days?

If they appoint MON then the boss of the Republic will be Martin O'Neill and the boss of Northern Ireland is Michael O'Neill.

Those idiots at sky sports will have a great time with that.

Etymology isn't really important as Claude Moet's family had been in France 200 years when he started making champagne, so it's unlikely the correct Dutch pronunciation survived all that time.

What is important is the company themselves pronounce it Mowett, whether on it's own or suffixed with et Chandon.

Here's an official video by them, featuring the correct pronunciation.

Interesting, but not as clear-cut as you make out. The voiceover certainly pronounces the founder's name with a hard "t" at the end, but goes on to pronounce the firm's name three different ways: the first time (at 0'26") the "t" is silent, the next time it's sounded, and the last time it's swallowed in a glottal stop.

Hallo, I am Dom Pérignon, and you are watching Six Crazy Minutes!

[article=http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11707/8919731/mick-mccarthy-backs-martin-oneill-for-republic-of-ireland-job]Mick McCarthy believes Martin O'Neill is "nailed on" to become the new manager of the Republic of Ireland.

The Ipswich Town boss, who led Ireland to the last-16 of the 2002 World Cup, has been heavily linked with a return to the position he previously held for six years.

"I'm not surprised (to be linked) because I did a good job last time," said McCarthy, who won 57 caps for Ireland.

"But Martin O'Neill is getting the job as far as I'm aware. That's totally nailed on. He's a shoo-in for it.

"He's ex-Celtic and is a damn good manager. My understanding is that he's got the job. Good luck to him, I'm delighted."

McCarthy revealed that his Ipswich contract had a clause that would have allowed him to return to Ireland, but that clause expired last summer.

The 54-year-old took charge of the Championship side last November following the sacking of Paul Jewell, and he insists he has no intention of leaving Portman Road.

"I've been linked it with it because of my success doing that job in the past," he said. "I've not courted it or fanned the flames at all. I'm not going to do that now.

"I was asked in here, when Giovanni was under pressure, do you fancy it? And I said 'yes I would at some stage', but I'm in a job and it's not the right time. I'm loving what I'm doing here.

"Martin O'Neill is out of work and he can walk straight into the job. I think he's perfect for them."[/article]

Ireland should go for Lars Lagerbäck (ex Sweden, now Iceland). He makes miracle happen with shit teams.

MON is made for clubs, where he can rule from day to day. How he fares with a bunch who only turn up every few months will be another matter.

Martin O'neill or Roy Keane? Such a win win situation.......for England fans. And we've got Roy Hodgson!

Keep watching, John... This is your future, mate. English football is currently in the decline that Irish, Scottish and Welsh football has suffered over the past 15 years.

I will probably be dead by the time we sink to your levels!

Then again it's not as big an embarrassment for countries like Ireland, Scotland, and Wales considering the size of such countries in comparison to 'the home of Football' that is England.

I would accept that. Lets clear this up a bit.

I support Liverpool. I don't care about any other club side. In fact give me the chance to mock another club then I may well do. Now transfer it to the international scene. I don't care about the other home nations, and if I get be chance to take the piss, I will.

It's football banter.

England are an Everton. However Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and ROI are the Rochdales, Oldhams etc. yeah they have their day but their day is few and far between.
