Liverpool hope to complete the signings of Paris St Germain defender Mamadou Sakho and Sporting Lisbon youngster Tiago Ilori before Sunday's match with Manchester United. The Anfield club are in talks with both clubs and hope to reach an agreement on the respective deals over the weekend. The 23-year-old Sakho, who can play as a centre back and on the left, has played 14 times for France and is likely to cost around £13m while Ilori, 20, is one of the most promising young defenders in Portugal. Both players are expected on Merseyside for medicals and further talks in the next 24 hours.

I hope this isn't another 'two goalkeepers signed in one day'-type cock-up!

I'd say its more Coates is fucked, Skrtel's gash & Wisdom's off on loan.

Besides, unlike the keepers, at least we could field these two at the same time.

Sakho is left sided and is costing the club a significant amount. Is the vice captain heading for the Nou Camp?

Sakho can also play DM too right? So he will be a good 'options' player. Wage wise though it would seem we havea large amount going on CBs with Skrtel, Agger, Toure, Ilori and Sakho though!

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO TIAGO ILORI

Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori has been named as one of Liverpool’s top priority signings this summer. They will face tough competition from Valencia who are also very keen on the 20 year old central defender, as well as rumours that PSG and Lyon are keeping a close eye on him. But what is all the hype about?

Tiago is another product of the Sporting’s excellent youth academy that is famous for producing world-class talents such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Figo and Rui Patrício – to name just a few. He started his career at Imortal, a small club in the Algarve, in 2004. In 2006, at the age of 13, he made the move to Lisbon to train in Alcochete, at the Sporting Academy.

He arrived as a fast winger that had the ability to play through the middle and with an unusual ability to control the ball. In 2007, he had a small setback that led to Sporting loaning him to Estoril-Praia, a club on the outskirts of Lisbon. It was at that time that he stood out as a central defender and in the following summer, he was back at the Sporting Academy.

It was in 2011 that he made his European debut with Sporting, against Lazio, in the Europa League. You may have read that Tiago Ilori is the fastest player in 30m sprints to have ever been through the Academy (yes, faster than Cristiano Ronaldo). In that game, he managed to keep up with Djibril Cisse on numerous occasions, sometimes even after handing him a head-start.

Jurgen Klopp, Borussia Dortmund’s manager, recently said in an interview that a crucial feature of a good centre back is his technical ability, and that this ability could be analysed with three parameters: reception/ball control, ability to move with the ball and passing quality. Since Ilori became a first team player at Sporting in the beginning of this year, his technical qualities have improved exponentially from match to match. In the 11 matches he played for Sporting this term, he scored one goal and contributed to various others. http://youtu.be/JzmuMnUiSmI?t=4m33s

He came into a Sporting side that has been struggling this year into the frailties of the league, but came in an invigorated them into some life along with some of his academy colleagues.

Tiago Ilori is one of the fastest players I’ve ever seen, has strong aerial ability, tactical intelligence and excellent technical skills. He still makes some mistakes, as is to be expected from a 20 year old central defender, but he has everything to become a world-class player in the next few years. In these next years, he needs to bulk up his physique if he wants to defend against tall and strong strikers, improve his positioning and become a reference from corners so he can score more goals.

Sporting have been quick to acknowledge Ilori’s development and, in March, extended the player’s contract until 2015, with a reported buy-out clause.

Portuguese journalist and Sporting expert Tom Kundert believes Os Leaos were wise to do so and that Ilori is a genuine prospect;
“Ilori was thrown in at the deep end and looked a bit nervous. However, he has got better and better and looks like a classy centre-back, rather than a ‘Rambo’ type. More Ricardo Carvalho than John Terry, you could say.”

Others have compared him to Real Madrid’s French centre-back, Raphael Varane due to his tall, slender figure, yet omnipresent strength and pace. Another reason Rodgers might be interested is because he is versatile; allowing him to play at left-back, somewhere he has played at youth footballing levels.

As a Sporting fan, I would obviously prefer him to stay with us for a couple more years. He would get more playing time, evolve his playing skills, and then, at the right moment, make his move to the Premier League. If, however, he chooses to move now, we wish him all the luck in the world – I am certain he will be a world-class central defender.

Doubt it, hes considered one of the best centre half prospects in Europe, good in the air pace to burn and a decent decision maker. He probably needs to bulk up a bit and he may find himself played out at full back to get some but Id be amazed if hes not being groomed to be Aggers successor

Liverpool's latest acquisition, Tiago Ilori, is eager to learn from his new teammates after completing a permanent switch from Sporting Lisbon on Monday – and has cited Anfield legend Jamie Carragher as one of his main inspirations.

The 20-year-old is relishing the prospect of training, and potentially playing, alongside the wealth of central defensive talent currently at the club.

Despite his tender years, Ilori insists he won't be fazed by the quality of players who now surround him at Melwood - and he can't wait to kick-start his Liverpool career.

"For me, the competition is great because I'm a young player, I want to learn and I think that with the players in my position I can learn a lot," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I used to watch Jamie Carragher play as a young boy and I would have loved to have had the chance to train and play with him. I'd also like to one day maybe fill his place, too.

"The last 24 hours have been chaotic. It's been nerve-wracking - I've just wanted to get things sorted out. But it's been exciting as well."

The youngster can already boast experience of playing in front of the Kop.

He was part of the Sporting Lisbon team which included Liverpool Academy starlet Joao Carlos Teixeira that beat the Reds 3-0 at Anfield in August 2011.

It's a night Ilori remembers fondly - and he's eager for plenty more wins in L4 over the coming seasons.
"It was incredible," said the defender. "It's one of the best stadiums I have ever played in. We won on the night, so I hope I can keep winning at Anfield.

"I'm definitely looking forward to walking out there as a Liverpool player. Everyone talks about the atmosphere. I'll feel proud when I get the chance to walk out the tunnel at Anfield.

"It'll be a dream come true, especially at such a young age."

You can see highlights of the match where both Teixeira and Ilori basically auditioned for LFC here. A real education the club had that night, reminscent of when Rafa's Valencia came to Anfield. Key action begins around 4 minutes in.

I hope we have a better plan for him than just cup games - either an intense training programme or work with the likes of Toure in the training ground to learn his trade. I'm both concerned and excited that we have so many young CB prospects at the club. Between Ilori, Wisdom, Kelly and Sakho I think we will be approaching a situation of getting a set back four in about 2-3years that could last for seasons.
