Thoughts on Today's game

Not open for further replies.
Two weeks ago, a fair few people on here thought our CB partnwrship should be Agger plus one and Skrtel was a great option at RB.

Livid to be honest. Im sure every Red was/still is.

From the first whistle, we just look so disjointed and dis-organised. Downing on the right when he's a left winger(i just don't get that despite what people say about this cutting in on your strong foot shite).

Henderson who's been used wide right thus far is for some reason put in the middle up against Modric and Parker and Adam seems to find himself wide left. Downing and Adam tuck in meaning we're all over the shop in midfield... Skrtel and Enrique are given zero protection. Any wonder we got battered.

Can understand why Kenny went for the more experienced Skrtel over Flanagan, but ffs Kenny...when it's not working, change it!! Everyone could see what was happening.

Simply not good enough, but we're used to building ourselves up only to get knocked down.

yeah u cant blame it on the sending offs, we were clearly always losing that game, and if we didnt we certainly deserved to

hazard or our new CM, RW, CF and DM?

all of them/none of them skulls. They're all/one of them will be amazing

oh actually ive got another thought, suarez is lookin a bit shitter with every game, the amount of times he's missed a sitter or fucked up a first touch after a wonderfull ball is deffo increasing, obv ive just brushed it off, thinkin that he's quality, but yano, he needs to not get complacent i guess

Downing got player of the year at Villa last season playing right midfield.
Fas who would you have brought on at half time for Skrtel?

It's not Suarez it's the midfield. We can't just give Suarez the ball and hope he megs three players and scores.
This can't continue or we'll have another disappointed foreigner in the squad.
We need more creative outlets.

Just look at the team we just played. Van der Vaart, Modric, Kranjar, Bale and Lennon(allthough he didnt play) all midfielders who can create space and goals.
We've got Gerrard and maybe Downing.

We're now in stage 2 of the season. That the one where most of the posters deny anything is wrong and call the others kneejerkers, armchair fans, etc..

I've decided to skip through all this and go to stage one of the next cycle, so I'd just like to say that our new manager is exactly what we need now going into the new season. All that pass and move stuff was really a bit naive and what we need in this era is a tactically aware manager who can make us hard to beat. There's no point in entertaining one week if you're over-run the following week. I'm really excited by all these exotic signings we've made because clearly although there is a role for British players, you just can't compete without some top level foreigners in key places in the team. I think this is gonna be our year lads.
[/quote]

Lol.

I'm quite surprised that Kenny is falling into the trap of his predecessors, ie over complicating things, especially his lineups. Andy Carroll isn't up to it and until he is he needs to be forced to fight for it. Bellamy should be playing on the road, I'm not being all Neil-esque and generalising, but you do more counter attacking away from home and having a distinct lack of pace has always held us back in this respect, I really don't see what the point is about Carroll helping us away from home, he doesn't. You need an outlet and if the ball is played up to him and there's no one with pace in support (bar Suarez) then really, what's the fucking point?

I also agree with whomever it was earlier who said that Kuyt should play with Suarez, a front three of Suarez (middle), Kuyt and Bellamy is probably the best we've got, that leaves a bit of a conundrum over Downing, but so be it. As for Henderson, he's got a long way to go, right now he just looks like a journey man.

The midfield and attack with everyone fit should be:

--Bellamy--------Suarez----------Kuyt--
-------------------Gerrard------------------
-----------Adam-----------Lucas-----------

The defence is a joke and I'm not going to hold Carra as the main issue, the issue is the unit, it's poor and the two in central midfield don't protect it enough. Agger is cumbersome, he might be tidy and help us maintain possession but he's also sluggish and sometimes slow to snuff out the danger, he's also shown in the last two games a stupid tendency to step out of position. I appreciate him always looking to move forward but he stepped out from the back last week to challenge Crouch, which led to the space behind him being exploited. Carragher is struggling too (though the lack of real right back isn't helping him), Skrtel clearly isn't one and is all over the place at times, Kelly is injury prone, we've discussed Johnson to death and that leaves a relatively inexperience kid as the only real option. Not good.

The pissing about with tactics in midfield has left us lacking cohesion and playing like strangers again. How hard can it be? If you play Downing you play him left, if you play Adam you play him alongside Lucas in the middle. It's leaving the defence exposed by not maintaining possession and generally having players in unfamiliar roles or differing roles (not just each week but in game too), which results in players not tracking back and not getting a man and making sure you cover the ground and pick players up when on the defensive.

It's a shambles and it needs sorting quick. Get back to the basics.

Villa had Ashley Young on the other side, we don't. He played many a time on the left as well and he is a LEFT WINGER. We've been needing a left winger for fucking donkey years now and when we finally get one we put him on the right. ???
If we're playing a so called inferior side at Anfield, then fair enough but for crying out load, away at Spurs isn't the time to fuck about with formations.

Im not saying Skrtel should have been hooked but he should have been given more protection. Why not bring Henderson over to that side. Bring Kuyt on and let him play wide right? Do something.

AND, its no point overanalyzing this game either.
We cant make a judgement after today as the tactics and players were all over the place after the sending off.

Id play against Wolves:

Downing Gerrard Lucas Bellamy

Carroll Suarez

Lucas isnt good enough but he's better than Spearing.

I'd play Dirk up top with Suarez

Carroll has had chances and done fuck all.maybe he thinks Kenny will play him because of his fee,not his effort.

I like Carroll a lot but he's done next to fuck all for us thus far. If he plays a blinders against Brighton (urgh) then fine, start against wolves to build his confidence

These websites are for analysing matches and suchlike mate.

We were over the shop from the off. Before they scored and before we went down to 10 men.

I suggested Spearing to start...unsettle Parker and Modric. Easy to say that now with hindsight but really, at a place like White Hart Lane, he's the type of player you need.

Agree about your team for the Wolves game. Kuyt for Carroll though.

What chances has Carroll had exactly?
He was injured last season and had been in and out of the side this season.
Granted he started today but the midfield was shambolic.

It's just frustrating. Kuyt can be abysmal yet cause problems with his workrate. He's not a right mid but he is a striker so fuck it. if Carroll wants to play he has to earn it now. No more bedding in

Neil, i like andy, i really do, but FFS I want to see EFFORT from him! Hes not a poacher, he's not a speedster, he doesn't even seem to be able to do the power thing either recently. When he plays he's in positions of no danger, he's not making himself available. It's almost as if he tries to put himself into positions where he can't get the ball passed to him!

He runs about when off the ball but in positions of no danger. I just want to see something from him that says he can score. Hes dangerously low on confidence so he needs o start at brighton. If he has a quiet game i'd drop him. If he's involved in everything then play him against wolves

I'd play him in both. He needs goals and a confidence boost. Andy Carroll played last year like he could take on the world, running at defenders and throwing himself at everything hit into the box.

A goal or two would do him the world of good. That he's having a bit of a problem adapting is an undrstatement, but we all know what he can be. At least some of us do.

exactly, i know he can be great for us as he showed at newcastle

BUT

At the moment we seem to be struggling with him in the XI

Yep, he needs to step up. But we need to stop the hoofing from the back. We dont have to do it just because he's playing.
Find the right mix of speed alongside him and I think everything will be fine. The midfield/attack I posted earlier would be very exciting.

The hoofing is not dependant on him though. We hoofed it to suarez last week as well as others.

Adams guilty of it, agger is, enrique is as well as carra. Kenny needs to fucking sort it out

Come on B - we dominated the Stoke game, and just couldn't make possession/shots/domination translate into goals. It happens. This was a game where we were such shit that we couldn't afford what happened (quick goal, cards etc). I HOPE it's something Kenny learns from, and we ensure it doesn't happen again.

2-1-2 isn't a great way to start the season - but let's not lose hope just yet. After we lose to Wolves, ok? 😛

Fact is, we were SO bad it's actually easy to write this one off put it behind us and move on. A bit like when the Mancs lost 5-0 at Newcastle or 6-2 or whatever the hell it was at Southampton. I'd actually be more worried if we were just average and lost 1 or 2 nil. We won't play that badly again this season. We won't have two players sent off in the same game again this season. Hopefully we won't get that ref again this season. And most of all, next time we play in the league, Stevie will be on the pitch. Cheer up fellas.
