Liverpool set to snap up Twente attacker Bryan Ruiz - report
6 Jul 2010 15:00:00

Roy Hodgson is determined to kick off his Liverpool refurb with the capture of Twente hot shot Bryan Ruiz, according to the Daily Mail.

Ruiz, 24, was the catalyst for Steve McLaren's successful charge to the Dutch title after he grabbed 24 goals in his debut season. This form initially alerted Hodgson when he was at Fulham but he lacked the financial clout to compete for the Costa Rican's signature.

Now in charge at Anfield he will move for Ruiz whether Fernando Torres leaves or not. Hodgson will have to fight off the advances of Villarreal, Rennes and Steve McLaren's new side Wolfsburg to land the player for a reported £12.5 million.

Fiorentina hope to conclude a £3.7million deal for Liverpool Emiliano Insua following Roy Hodgson's appointment as Rafa Benitez's replacement at Anfield.
The Italians looked close to a deal last month but were told to wait for the Reds new manager to be appointed.
Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena have already left the Merseysiders, but Hodgson is likely to let go of fellow left back Insua if he can secure a replacement.

€5m for Insua would be fantastic business. Although it would mean we'd have to buy TWO left-backs. Maybe go for Figueroa plus someone like Michel Bastos (Lyon) or Benoit Trémoulinas (Bordeaux) who can cover both LB and LW?

We should deffo get that Ruiz fella from Eriedivisie

There's no way we could buy *another* free-scoring hot-shot from the Netherlands who forgets how to score

It's simple statistics

Lyon spent about 18million on Bastos so doubt he'll be going on the cheap. I would like him though.

I guess Agger could be used as cover, and then one of the reserves if needs be.

perhaps mavinga could be given a run out in the friendlies?

Given that Agger is an injury-prone CB and that we suffered like crazy last season through playing an inexperienced reserve LB all the time, I don't think that's a very good idea.

I don't reckon it's that simple though. Agger seemed to have put his injury troubles largely behind him as the season went on, and I thought he did rather well at LB in the last few weeks of it. Not that I'm advocating him playing anywhere other than CB as a rule, but slotting him in at LB is an option if we need it IMO.

Depends who's available at CB though, doesn't it? Apart from Agger, we've only got Carra (32), The Greek (42) and Skrtel, who spent half of last season injured.

I still think my idea of signing an attacking LB/alternative LW is the best one. Especially if we end up selling (as I think we should) Insua, Babel and Riera - in addition to the departures of Aurelio and Yossi.

Hodgson's already said that the senior squad is a bit thin, so I think some depth-building is on the cards.

Liverpool FC target ex-Wigan Athletic midfielder

According to reports former Wigan Athletic midfielder Paul Scharner is a target for Liverpool FC.

Scharner is available on a free transfer after deciding his time with the Latics had come to an end.

New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has been an admirer of the Austrian international and sought to take him to Craven Cottage when in charge of Fulham.

It seems Hodgson’s interest has not waned following his move to Anfield and is now hoping to bring him to Merseyside.

Scharner wants to stay in the Premier League and would certainly jump at the chance of playing for a big club.

However, it seems Hodgson will face competition from Aston Villa.

i dont want scharner and i dont want figeroua. Joe cole and this ruiz guy for around 7mil and id be delighted. obviously more signings too tho

this might cheer our resident misanthrope up a bit..............

David Ngog
Liverpool to West Brom -

West Brom are looking around for strikers and want to explore the possibility of taking Ngog on loan.

Liverpool may be willing but it depends on who else they bring in and whether Fernando Torres stays.

Ngog has potential and maybe with a different coaching approach can develop into a top player.

He has good pace but his strength and decision making in the 18-yard box need to improve if he is to justify a permanent role in Liverpool's first team squad.

Manager Roy Hodgson could be just the man to bring that out of him after the giant strides he made with Bobby Zamora at Fulham.

West Brom are also still in the hunt for Frederic Piquionne after he failed to agree terms with either Fulham or West Ham.
