I’m getting a little bit excited about it. Probably because it’s quite unusual, but mostly because there have been occasions within our opening 4 games where you get little snippets of what potentially could be coming.
What makes it a bit unusual is that it’s looking like an actual proper 4-3-3, not the stagnant 4-1-4-1 you see in England and across Europe. Our midfield 3 is positioned more flat across the midfield than normal. This allows for more freedom and fluidity in the front 3. At any given moment, any of our front 3 could be centrally positioned – which is exactly what we saw on Saturday. Enter Mane’s pace to this fluid system and suddenly we’re seeing a really exciting team going forward.
There were moments during the Leicester game where one of our players would pick up the ball just slightly deep of our number 10 area, and you’d notice one or two of our attackers breaking in behind at speed. I think this is precisely one of the reasons Wijnaldum was bought. I noticed him surging ahead a couple of times to be our most advanced runner.
I’m getting a much clearer picture of Klopp’s vision. I like it.
