Stoke thoughts....

First half was so typical of this season but I thought we played really well in the second...a few jitters aside. Kolo and Lucas were our stand out performers.
Why are we starting so slow? It's like Brendan has us unprepared for every game. We usually improve as adjustments are made, but 8 months ago we were killing teams in the first 25 minutes.

It was a strange atmosphere at the game. The team's clear lack of confidence seemed to feed the tension in the crowd but then in the second half as soon as a few moves came off and the tempo stepped up the crowd lifted massively and the players fed off it. Something to build on.
Crowd will probably start subdued again next home game - it will take a spark on the field to get them going. Of course, against Basel we can expect the crowd to provide the impetus.

Only saw the second half and based on that I thought we deserved our win. I'm a bit surprised nobody mentioned the Coutinho penalty claim ( maybe they did and I missed it). I thought it was a stonewaller.

Incidentally Nicholarse on Sky said we didn't deserve our win and that he has never heard a quieter Anfield crowd.

2nd half we were much better, but I still felt there was that uncertainty.

We defended like we were terrified. Again.

The difference being that this time we defended successfully. I thought there were definite signs of improvement. It's baby steps, but I think this could be a big result for us.

I simply can not fathom how some people (here and in the MoM thread) don't have Allen in, or very near, the MoM position. He was simply outstanding, tracking & tackling back, running around non-stop to create space in midfield and making himself available and feeding the attack .. and joining it.

He was excellent. His passing was also very positive and noticeably more incisive today. Lucas was also very good, and Hendo really drove the team on in the second half. I would play all three of them again against Leicester.

Was at the game today, atmosphere was kind of shit, we played a decent 2nd half.

BTW suso's misses is LUSH, saw them both walking round the stadium about an hour before kickoff...

Is this the same Charlie Nicholas who gave Allen a rating of 5? I wasn't sure who was commenting on my stream but he sang the same tune. I thought we were good 2nd half, played with passion, urgency and flair and deserved the win.

Some of the movement around the penalty area in the second half reminded me of last season. Only shame was that we didn't have Suarez or Sturridge on the end of them. We hadn't done that all season so that was very pleasing.

Kolo played well.
He made some vital blocks from long ranging shots, though to me he shouldn't have had to do that. As well as Allen and Lucas played, they should have been the ones blocking those or better yet stopping them from having that opportunity in the first place.

And well done Lambert for not giving up.
Brilliant header at the end to set Johnson up for his heroic goal. None of our other strikers could have headed that.

There is that.. but questions have to be asked in regards why thess new players are not performing..

Slow starters? Slow learners? Glass hearts?
Don't know.. But his free CB signing and his attacking signing from 1.5 seasons ago performed well.

A few second thoughts from me after seeing the highlights on MOTD this morning:

1. Whoever kicked Magic in the face should have walked. It was absolutely clear what Magic was going to do;
2. It's high time we quit playing Raheem on the left and switched him back over to his natural side; and
3. That save by Mignolet from Bojan was an absolute worldy.

Yeh I thought that.. Bojan looked Ace yesterday.. Too good for Stoke. .

Second half was definitely much better than the first. Touré and Lucas were the standout performers-- that steal off Adam that led to the break is what we expect Liverpool to do. There are still worries, though; once we scored, we looked terrified and got sucked deeper and deeper towards our own box. And much work still needs doing at set-pieces-- we look a shambles at corners and set-pieces (almost the entire team in and around the box and opponents getting to the ball regardless) and can't still get to the second ball- that Bojan striker looked suspiciously like "the worldy" from which Jagielka score that equaliser and that came from a clearing header from Touré.

But a win is a win, and one cannot grumble against a clean sheet. The real test of Rodgers's acumen is who is going to be dropped on Tuesday.

Didn't see Rodgers post match words but apparently these came out of his mouth:

BR on Gerrard: He’s at the point in his career where he’s not going to be playing every game.

Still love Gerrard but glad the penny (or balls) has finally dropped with Rodgers

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy MOTD 'Strange game for Liverpool' Liverpool 1-0 Stoke.

"Stoke played well, especially in the first half, they kept the ball well. They lost Steve Sidwell which didn't help, losing his bite. "For Liverpool it was a strange game, they started quite lacklustre, there was a lack of energy and they were too deep. They did play in Europe midweek but they were slow. They didn't have Steven Gerrard dropping deep to get the ball. They were edgy which is understandable with recent results.

"In the second half the pressing was much better, the passing much crisper, they were getting at Stoke and the urgency was much better. They got their rewards through a brave goal, Glen Johnson has been criticised quite heavily and I'm pleased for him. Overall they deserved it."

Why don't you like Raheem on the left? He's playing well there.

My problem with it is his end product. He's too good not to show quality at certain points in the game, but he's continually having to use his left foot to make the final pass or cross and, while he's capable of that, he's less effective with it than he is with his right.

He did say that and I agree it's encouraging. I'd add that, when Stevie does play, it *has* to be further forward, so I hope Rodgers sticks with that.

Pisses me off that we, in the process of accommodating Gerrrard to the DM position, threw away this season.

I agree it's been a mistake, but the season's not gone yet. The title probably has, but after losing Suarez we were always unlikely to win that this season IMO, and a CL place is absolutely still up for grabs.

Which pleases me.

You must have known Rodgers sets the team up in such a way that the DM is on the ball more than anyone else. So you must also have known why he wants a good footballer like Gerrard there rather than Lucas. So he persisted with it until he had no other option but to give up in order to save his job. Everybody would do exactly the same thing. It's human nature.

Normal human beings always persist in the hope that things will turn around. Few of them can admit defeat and quickly let go of their position. So unless you want the club to be managed by a scientist, lawyer, professional poker player or financial trader... then deal with it.

I don't agree.

We haven't lost the season because Gerrard has played in that role, we've lost it because we can't defend and we can't score goals. We only just scraped it yesterday and there are other games where Gerrard has played in a more advanced position and we've still lost. Blaming Gerrard is just trying too hard to crush the rationale behind it and to champion the return of Lucas. There have been enough examples of where one has worked and the other hasn't, and vise versa. Lucas was dire against West Ham and we got battered, for example.

I don't want to see Gerrard in that role, for the record, because I think it's a waste of his talents and I don't think his natural game suits playing there, he's a player you tell to do what he wants on the pitch, restricting him is counterproductive, but it's not the sole or major reason for our downfall. The reason behind that is pretty fucking obvious.

I don't agree.

Of course.

But you clearly want to see us play football similar to the time of Benitez. That is essentially why you are so adamant that Lucas must start come what may. Rodgers has a different way of playing and a different view. Also don't get too happy, I can almost guarantee you that he'll return to his preferred system at the first opportunity.
