Has scored more than 10 goals this season at a rate of 1 in 3. In general, over his career he has scored at a rate of 1 in 9.

Not only is his rate of goal scoring impressive, his goals are more than often clutch. Three goals in 2 CL finals including a 93rd-minute equalizer.

Given his honors list and given the fact that he has made decisive contributions in winning those honors, where do you all rate him in the all time great defenders list? I know he used to get a lot of red cards early on in his career but it looks like he has cut down on that. Does he deserve to be spoken in the league of one of the great players of this generation?

He is a prick and hence I dont rate him. Having said that he is not the best defender in Madrid history. Hierro will top that. He also outscored him if I an not mistaken.

Tough question as I don't think I've ever seen him as a 'great defender' ... But his honors list is incredible.

Yup. He has never been a "great defender" in the Maldini, Baresi mould but he has an impressive list of honors and he has made decisive clutch contributions to the team winning those honors. This season he has scored as many as Firmino (our second highest goal scorer).

10 goals for any defender is remarkable.

The guy is barely 6 ft tall, how does he get his head on so many set plays?

Amazing career, not an amazing player but you have to give him credit for longitivity and boy does he love a goal from a set piece when his team needs it most
