"As a manager, you can take pressure off your men by making yourself accountable for success and failure."
WHAT HE SAID LAST NIGHT
"Our penalties were terrible ... Our keeper did his bit but we didn't execute our penalties well enough."
WHAT HE WROTE IN 2010
"If a player scores a good one in training you say: 'I like that. Can you go and practise it? Can you guarantee to take that penalty in a shootout?' This means that when your players walk up to the spot they — and, more importantly, you — have decided exactly what they’re going to do."
WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT
Unless Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones had decided to blast theirs high and wide, United were certainly not executing a precise game plan.
WHAT HE WROTE IN 2010
"We score together, we miss together when it is penalties."
WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT
Well, United certainly missed together...
WHAT HE WROTE IN 2010
There are drills you can do to make players better at penalties. You can get them to shoot without a goalkeeper and focus on something like accuracy by saying that every kick they take has to hit the side net inside the post.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT
Only Darren Fletcher managed to hit the side net inside the post. Adnan Januzaj and Rafael's shots were on target, but too close to the centre of the goal.
WHAT HE WROTE IN 2010
"An important point to make is that you can’t be sure who will be on the pitch at the end of 120 minutes; players you earmark for a spot-kick might get injured or be sent off or substituted. My guess is that (then-England boss) Fabio Capello knows not just his best five takers but also his next five.
WHAT HE SAID LAST NIGHT
"Ideally it probably wouldn't have been the group of players at the end that we had out that we would have chosen. Chicharito would have probably taken a penalty and people like Michael Carrick would have been involved had he still been on the pitch."[/article]
