Before anyone says anything, I'm not getting ahead of myself here, asking a hypothetical question.

So, say we won the Carling Cup and FA Cup, but only managed 5/6/7th, how would people view the season? Run away success? Complete failure? Some cups masking a bad season?

It's interesting because I'm not sure how I'd feel, we need to start winning cups, however, not getting in the champions league would just feel like our progress is stalling, at least being in Europa would help attract players a little bit I suppose.
 
WIP. The team will have installed to them a winning mentality...

I'd be happy with that.. champs league is overrated anyway.. No team will get anywhere near Madrid or Barca for a fair few years anyway...


During that time we have the chance to build a team that can compete...
 
personally, i wouldn't swap CL qualification even for a cup double, because i think league success - even such relative success - is a better indicator of quality than winning the now devalued cup competitions; i think that's a pretty sad reflection on the modern game, though. i felt the same in 2001: finishing 3rd was the single thing i most relished from that season.

but, even so, if we did do it, it would rightly go down as a great season.
 
It would be great if we could win them and do it in style, would be even better if we can then turn that into consistency next year.
 
Ah. It will be the same bullshit from rival fans that we didnt beat any good teams at all in our way to the final... Which is probably true 😉
 
I'd be made up. It would mean we've progressed even if we do miss out on CL qualification (which I think we will).
 
Winning two competitions out of a possible three...I'd be delighted. But there is a long, long way to go.

We haven't won anything since 2006 (FA Cup), although we did get to the Champions League Final the following year and were runners-up in the league in 2009, it's usually winners that are remembered, and looking through the squad the only players that have lifted a trophy with Liverpool are Gerrard, Carragher and Agger. It'd be fantastic to see the players who have been here for the past five or so years taste some success with us like Kuyt, Reina, Lucas, Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio...

it's probably true that only our trophy-winning teams are widely remembered, but for me, again, i always look back most fondly that i consider the 'best', regardless of trophies won, hence i preferred the 01/02 season to the treble year, and the 08/09 season to the cup-winning season.

oh, and Reina actually played rather a large part in the 2006 cup win. 😉

Considering the money we spent winning 2 cups would be the only way Kenny stays in his job without finishing fourth IMO... I'm all for it!

A trophy would be nice.... its been too long without one.

I still want us to finish top 4 mind you!!
 
Trophies are important - they breed confidence, they breed a 'winning attitude,' they increase the desire to get more trophies etc ... 2 cups in his first season would be a good season.
 
i guess it would be very similar to benitez's first season in that we'd have success to celebrate but worrying league form . Hey i've been one of the most negative on here this season but 2 cups would be massive . Infact i am just really excited about being in the league cup final . I would though of course expect our issues to be addressed , if we thought 2 cup wins meant we had enough then i'd be very frustrated .

So obviously i'd choose the cups over 4th place no worries , even if it was just the FA cup on it's own . Yeah they may not carry as much prestige as 15 yrs ago but certainly the FA cup is a big deal . And anyway i think it depends on the semi's and final , if they are big games between big teams then people really care . It's just if you get a heavy favourite or 2 lesser teams in the final that people say it's lost it's value .

And maybe it's just me but i dont remember there being as much importance put on the champs league back in 2001 . It seemed a lesser target and a bonus when we got it .

i remember feeling it was absolutely crucial, and feeling sick with nerves during that amazing 8-9 game run at the end of the season to clinch it, and also being absolutely gutted when we blew it the previous season.

the difference then, tbf though, was that the uefa cup was actually fairly decent compensation as it still seemed pretty glamourous; not sure what's changed given that it's still just the 'top' 32 teams in the CL and the rest in the EL... but changed it has.
 
Id be over the moon with that.
We havnt won a trophy in 6 years and won just two in the past decade.
We NEED to win something. Get that hunger and belief in the lads.

I share those lofty ambitions, but Champions League football is indispensable if we're to achieve them. Cups are nice baubles, nothing more. If we win the double but finish lower than 4th I'll regard the season as no more than partially successful.

I said it in the Harry (at who I can't remember) that I reckon our management's main aim this season is to win some silverware.
Merely qualifying for the Champions league is not the Holy Grail that some believe it to be.
 
When you say "management" who do you mean? John Henry set his stall out for CL qualification quite some time ago.

CL qualification may not be a Holy Grail, but we won't reach the real one without it.

[/quote]Mmmmm. I think you may be overstating that a bit JJ thought he did say that it was an ambition to qualify.
The way I read his remarks, it would be a disappointment rather than a disaster if we didn't qualify.

When I speak of management I am thinking of the management team as well as the owners and I feel there is a sense of longing to put Liverpool back in the winning rostrum again.

Aside from the financial loss/gain of qualifying for the champions league which carries the most Kudos, qualifying for a major tournament or winning a lesser one?
The last time I looked in our trophy room there wasn't much credit given for merely qualifying for the champions league.
 
I don't have the exact quote in front of me, but as I remember it he said CL qualification was an expectation rather than merely "it would be nice if".

Most unusually for you, I reckon those final two paras.are a bit short-sighted. The kind of kudos I'm concerned about is the kind which will persuade top players to throw their lot in with LFC, and as far as that's concerned I'm sure CL qualification will have the edge on winning domestic cups. It'll also bring in a fair bit more of the money we'll need to pay the kind of transfer fees those players will cost.
 
If we don't finish 4th with the way Chelsea and Arsenal have been and the money we spent I'll be well pissed off.

Cups are great but not being in the CL is failure.
 
I'm actually torn on the whole CL footy thing next season.

A part of me believes it's a step to soon, for kenny & the team. That said, part of me, a big part, detestes the Europa league & it's shite Thursday night channel five matches & enforced Sunday prem kick offs.

Grrrrrr.
 
I agree with JJ - I can see us getting 4th as at best a 20% chance. There is still a lot of work to be done. Think of all the shod teams who have beaten us this season. Coupled with the poor home (win) form. We are still a work in progress and some of our signings have not worked out. That along with Lucas being out for the season and the Suarez situation. Right now I'd bite your hand off for a cup double and 5th or 6th. It's not ideal but it is realistic.
 
I would sacrifice any cups for a fourth place, that is the sign of progression and give us the ability to attract the next level of player. It's where the big boys hang out
If we didn't, and we won two cups it would still be a great season,
