He needs to get bigger because he's getting shrugged of the ball too easily.
His size also forces him to use up a lot of energy in order to keep the ball in those types of duels.
Hence, my "he isn't ready" comment.
Watch the game again, at one point he muscled toure off the ball, he'll do just fine

I see that buffoon Stuart Pearce is looking to start playing him for England under 21s. I just hope the club remembers what happened to Owen and protect him much more carefully.

I thought Sean was making more of a humour based observation, I've joked a few times about playing Rodgers bingo. It doesn't mean I don't respect him, I love the way he talks, he just has some memorable phraseology he likes to use when he does so.

As for sterling, I'm dead against him hitting the weights at 17. It will not help imo, more likely hinder.

Weren't you the one advocating playing him (and others) recently and for most of last season, ahead of your pet hates like Downing and Adam (and Carra probably)?

You watch reserve team football Modo, so why are you acting like it's a new observation that the lad is slight, despite him playing now against Hearts, Leverkusen (albeit in a friendly) and the Premiership Champions, all with success?

So in a nutshell, you watch reserve team football, know exactly what he's about, tell us for months on end that he should play > he plays, he does well, no less against the best side in the league and you've now decided he isn't ready?

You have me scratching my head, ALOT Modo. Sometimes I wonder if you're actually a WUM, either that or really, really dim.

You're approach to what I said is like saying that there's no middle ground, either you want him to play or you don't want him to play.
I WANT HIM TO PLAY, but I've always said that it should be a gradual transition.

That's not what you said though Modo, or you didn't state it clearly enough. You said he 'isn't ready', then you said:

He needs to get bigger because he's getting shrugged of the ball too easily.

What middle ground? He's just played well and the barometer wasn't set against Norwich or Villa, but the Champions. If your point is that we need to be careful with him and protect him when we need to, then that's fair enough, but that's not what you said.

His involvement against Man C doesn't mean that he's ready. If we had a somewhat capeable winger at the club he wouldnt have started.

I've had to swallow my original statement on Sterling Modo. I said he wasnt ready and I reckon now he is! If he wasnt ready I'm sure Assaidi would have been drafted in and Borini deployed on the left.

Exactly

As the above article implies, I think last season's NextGen matches were an invaluable wake-up call to him just as he was slipping into an indifferent spell. He didn't exactly shine consistently in those games, but he learnt a lot from them and really knuckled down with Borrell after them and pushed on. He's been nurtured well by the club, contrary to some claims, and that's why he is looking so promising now.

Yep. Rodgers comments that he'd learnt about closing down their lines & moving into space within one game are very promising. It's one thing having those attributes that he has, but those combined with the ability to learn tactically are what set the best players apart.

What is it then, Sean? Genuine question because my first reaction was the same as the Doc's.

I think people can get uppity rather quickly online, myself included, when unable able to hear or see how someone is meaning something.
If I appeared to be being disrespectful or undermining of Rodgers that was not my intention. I'm not saying he's a twat or whatever. My only point is that management buzz speak, (which I deal with every day in my job) is hateful, and using the phrase 'going forward' is hateful too. As is any company offering 'solutions' or 'delivering great service or saying 'we are passionate about plumbing/meat packing/anal lice cream production'. It means absolutely nothing.
It is not an indictment of the man or his methods. I hope he will be an excellent manager for us. It is merely that my preference would be that he did not use management-speak or any other language that appears in Dilbert cartoons.
In my opinion this is rather different from what I was accused of, which was being pedantic over repetition.
Hope that clears that up. I really enjoy participating on this site, my favourite in many years, despite some predictable trolls and WUMs who couldn't find Anfield with a fucking sat nav, but then that's the power of the internet.

from the telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...o-Walcott-if-Andy-Carroll-joins-West-Ham.html

“The reality is, financially, we need to repair, so the players being linked for the money mentioned I don’t have the ability to sign in this window,” he said.
“Unfortunately, it is going to take more than one window. It is an incredible club and even though you want to move players on, because of wages and other factors they are not going to just walk out the door. I’m precise with my information so they know where they stand.
“Ultimately, it comes down to what your objective is as a player. I can only be straight. Does the player want to play football? I’ve made it clear I have a one to 11, cover players and development players.”
Asked specifically if Carroll will still be at Liverpool by the weekend, Rodgers said: “It’s still too early to say. Andy has been a cover player for us and has been excellent in terms of his attitude and acceptance of where he is at, but as a football club - and I’m talking generically here - I don’t think we are in a position to have £35 million players as third-choice strikers, or wingers who are on £5-6 million a year.”

what do you guys think? 5-6m winger...?

I've said this for months, and I know it's fucking obvious, but that's exactly what it's boiled down to, when we've got a £3m winger and a £10m forward on the pitch, there's no justification for having a £35m player sat warming the bench, eating up wages and wasting away valuable transfer funds. It's not solely about ability or suitability, it's always been political as much as anything.

I reckon the winger probably is generic speak, though it could easily be Cole, who's allegedly on just under £5m a year.

He's not a 35m pound player though is he? He's a whatever the fuck anyone offers us tomorrow player.

If he was at a club that didn't want to sell him I guess he would be worth in excess of £20m, the excess depending on how desperate the buying club was.
I reckon that we will have done well if we get £15m for him by Friday midnight, as it is obvious that we want shot of him.

His candour is quite admirable in a way but he's telling the hacks too much. It's no good straight batting them in televised conferences and then being much more open in off-camera briefings.

If anyone offers us 15m there'll be an additional compensation deal for wages as well. I reckon we'll see less than 10

I think there is also a desire to rid ourselves of the easy lay tag.
If someone is really trying to fuck us over I reckon(hope) we will tell them where to go

Unless he is playing the game and trying to keep the media sweet and on his side until he has had an opportunity to establish himself in his current position

Not the club, the player... Hasn't he got about 4 years left on a good contract? If Newcastle offer him their standard package and it works out 5m less over the term than we were going to pay him then his agent will sit there til midnight saying he wants us to write a cheque.

And so he should.

Depends how much Carroll wants the move to Newcastle too I guess.

There have been some suggestions that the West Ham offer is still on the table but Andy isn't budging.
It is turning into a game of chicken waiting for the first one to blink
