Given he is just about to break Fowlers record I thought this would be a worthwhile topic.

This is not a who is the better player thread. Imho Suarez would win that easily...

This is simply a who is/ was the most natural goalscorer out of the two..

In his prime Robbie was phenomenal. . He had everything you would want from a goalscorer...

Arguably they are both similar in some respect. Whilst both brilliant, both are/ where full off controversy on and off the field..

natural goalscorer

I've always hated that tag. Since someone on the TV once said it about Fowler, followed by everyone else in the media, it's the stock phrase that gets rolled out by everyone when ever discussing him. It's just lazy. It makes me walk off from people mid sentence, the beginning of this sentence is always a very close variation of 'Well Fowler, he was possibly the most natural goalscorer I've ever...' but I don't hear any more than that coz I've gone and looked for someone who can think for themselves.

Was Robbie controversial on the field?

As far as goalscoring is concerned, when Suarez was new and missed a fair number of chances I'd have said Robbie was the more natural of the two. However, given the way Suarez is now performing in the scoring stakes, IMO it's pretty clear that I'd have been wrong.

Suarez is the better player allround. But Fowler was a better finisher.

Suarez can play across the front line and alone upfront. Fowler was pretty limited in that sense.

Their technique is at about the same level, but Suarez is a better dribbler.

Sometimes yeah

A question for those who still nominate Robbie as the "better" finisher: what do you mean by that, given Suarez' scoring record?

Let me start off by saying, you know what we mean by that.
Fowler imo was like a sniper in the box. Top corner, bottom left corner, bottom right corner, that's how I remember it.
Plus, he made it look so so simple.

I don't believe that Fowler missed as many chances as Suarez does (at times), despite his phenomenal season.

I mean that he's a better finisher, simple as. His conversion % is probably far higher than Suarez's too, if you want 'statistical evidence.'

Sorry - lost you at "natural"

What the Fuck is a finisher? We're not playing mortal kombat! You mean goalscorer?

Suarez is a better player than fowler ever was

Fowler was a great finisher but I certainly remember him having runs of bad form where he missed plenty of chances.

I think Suarez is as good a finisher, though.

Strikers are paid to score goals ... they 'finish' off chances when the ball goes in the net ... so a good finisher is one who puts the ball in the net a lot ...

I do agree that Suarez is a better player than Fowler was ... I still think Fowler was a better finisher and what he was doing as a teenager was fucking incredible.

Saying that Fowler was a better finisher doesn't mean that Suarez is a poor finisher.

It's like saying Jordan is a better scorer than Kobe or LeBron ... Doesn't mean they aren't good scorers ... You're just comparing the best.

I'm probably living in the moment, but I think Suarez is finishing is almost as good as fowler (difference negligible) - what sets Suarez apart is the type of goals he can score and almost from anywhere in the pitch as well as the assists he does. Robbie's strenghs were in the pen area.

If there was a chance to drop to one of them in the last minute to win a game, I'd want it to drop to Fowler.

He was clinical.

If I could only sign one of them, it would be Suarez, though.

Right so the fact that Suarez will score MORE GOALS than fowler ever did in a single season, will still mean he's a poorer finisher?

Suarez is equally capable at finishing and is a far better all round footballer on top of that, to me.

Fowler was great, suarez is exceptional

I would say that God probably knew (to a half inch) where the goal was (ie. at all times), and consequently the side-netting he loved to find, better than any other player I've seen, even when back to goal or under pressure. Suarez has almost as good awareness of that but he has substantially more ability to be able to threaten it, and that combined with hitting his prime has resulted in some sensational shooting over the last year or so.

I think that is very well expressed.

Would anyone swap suarez for fowler? I'm guessing the vast majority would not
