The way he played in Spain vs New Zealand he would be in any start XI in the world!

I think Left Wing is one position we can improve on, every other position we have a very good player in, it is one of our only positions without an untouchable.

I think Silva would be a step up Mark.

I would take Silva for 20 mill. No doubt. But I feel confident that Riera can have a better season next season. Silva is however useful for a number of positions.. Add to the squad, dont chop it!

Is Silva reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally a step up at £20M odd, though?

Silva is cleary a step up. He oozes class. Riera is a nice outlet and is a steady player. He plays well against lesser teams but we need the extra little bit of class to take us forward.

Really? I'm not convinced, Peatchy.

I think Gerrard and Silva could link very well, also if Insua gets the chance he is very much a rampaging full back so those two could forge a great partnership. My only worry is would he help defensively?

Actually, I think Riera's best games last year were against top competition including two good games against the Mancs. He often failed to make a difference in the frustrating home draws against the bottom of the league.

i like riera as a squad player - for 8 million he's more than we could have hoped for but we need better there as babel is clearly not competition for him

I agree Rage but he has an excellent touch etc .... if he could be a little bit more aggressive he could definitely be useful for us.

He showed nice touches against United on his debut and he was poor and looked tired in the return fixture. His best game for us was at home to Villa. He went to town on a pathetic Rio-Coker. FACT.

He's exceeded my expectations in that he's proven his worth to the squad, but he's not good enough for the starting eleven.

Our first team has a one too many caveats - if Kuyt is the player for our right, then the player on the left needs to offer something different. Kuyt isn't going anywhere, so it's Reira's position that needs looking at.

Besides, a couple good games for a fantastic team swatting away inferior opposition shouldn't cloud the fact that for a good few months he was fucking dire for us. He often didn't have the fitness to last 90mins, he lacks pace and he lacks goal threat.

We need better.

A good player with a good touch, and was an integral part of our record breaking team. Can we do better? Theres not too much out there better with our budget. If we could get Silva, I think we should still keep Riera as he gives good width and is tactically astute. He also gets goals and makes assists. I think he a had a decent first season for us and hopefully he will improve next year. Funny enough they say Del Bosque sees him as the left side solution for the Spain team so he must be half decent.

I think many are judging him very harshly.

1st seaon in a new league at a massive club.

He's done well and I think he can build on last season.

He needs to work on his stamina for next season and if he can he could really rubber stamp the left wing.

Yeah I have the feeling he could greatly improve next year too and whilst I definetly wants us to add one more quality attacker, I wouldn't want Reira shipped out

Except when he was at Man City.

Hope people are letting a good confed's cup cloud their judgement. Riera is a tidy outlet who should be kept as a rotating squad player not an automatic first choice.

The guy frustrates me with his average-ness. Good to decent squad player, but i doubt he's got any more gears to go up in next year. Meh.

as others have said he is a good sqaud player but not sure if he should be a regular in the starting XI - I wonder if he would improve if he had real competition for the left wing spot (he is cleasrly preferred to Babel)

Agree with every word of that.

[/quote]Me too. But a caveat of my own. If he could maintain the form that he shows in patches he'd be one of the first names on my team sheet. I love what he does when he does it well, i just wish he could perform on a more consistent basis.
I often look to a wingers second season as the decider of his worth, mainly because the best foreign winger ive seen in this league was fucking rubbish in his first year here and unbelievable in his second once he understood the league better. So hopefully Riera can do a Pires and turn it up to 11 this year....rather than a Babel obv.

I'd be happy enough to have him in the squad for the price we paid for him, but I don't really rate him. I think we can do better for our starting 11. And off the bench what exactly is he going to offer? -I don't think he's got enough in his locker to be a match winner off the bench. He's decent enough cover if a first choice player got injured.

He's alright, although part of me still wonders if a lot of that was because we expected him to be average at best plus the fact he was reasonably cheap.

I think he has shown enough to be given a bit more time though definately.
