I must say I think I'm with Vlad on this one Oncey.

It annoys me constantly that all the work, the tackles won and the passes made by Lucas are constantly ignored because (instructed to or not) he sits back most of the time. I could not believe it took until your "minute by minute" post for someone to mention the fact he not only scored but somehow got in there and took the ball off the line at the close of the half.

Having said all that I thought he was passed by for much of that half. He really did take his goal very well; the run, the body control as he came to the keeper and the composure right through it was very good and Torres would have been lauded for it. He clearly relished it and was just buzzing for the rest of the half and into the second. However, he didn't have an assist and didn't dominate midfield by any stretch so a 9 looks a little over the top IMO.

As for Torres - he was utter rubbish for much of that first half and yet I simply didn't care. Came out in the second half in the same mood but scored two goals; that's what he does and that's why you play him.
Maybe 9 is too much, but i thought he was great tonight. The challenge he made for the 4th goal was absolutely massive and exactly the kind of thing he wasnt doing earlier in the season.
I think he missplaced about 2 or three passes all game and was very VERY good at breaking up play.
In addition his clearance was superb, it could easily have bobbled in off him but his speed of thought was such that he played the ball quite deliberately away. He also played a super ball over the top to Nando who was unfortunately offside.
Maybe my 9 is over the top but im sticking with it, if only to balance out the frigging 6's or 7's others are giving him.

And even took one in the goolies for the team

Still not a 9. It's a sad indication of how shit we've been that such a slightly above average performance is lauded so much. A 9 used to mean near perfection. Now it means better than shit.

Who is this fucking twat? Seriously.

Fucking hell Frank? I don't mind reading your posts but when it comes to Gerrard you have a serious agenda. Are you the DJ he twatted?

Oncy... that must have took some effort. Fair play, though. Not that I read it, ha, I already thought he had a good game and didn't need to read it all.

Good work Oncy.

I've said all along, I'd be pleased to see him stay as some kind of backup for Masher OR with the licence to break forward more, like we saw for the goal last night and in the game against Pompey. He's come in as an attacking midfielder and been reverted to a holding player out of necessity and Rafa's tendency to play with two DM's (of sorts).

He's young, he's learning and despite popular belief on here, he does look like he's getting better and stronger too.

I must say I'm absolutely baffled to see that Agger has often got a lower rating than Carragher, Kyrgiakos and Johnson.

Say it's agenda ridden or whatever you like but that's just wrong.

He didn't put a foot wrong all game and he was particularly influential in the first half making important challenges and hitting some wonderful passes. He was obviously instructed to sit deeper in the second half but was easily one of out best players especially when taken into considertaon he played a position he hadn't tried since the Brondby-days.

Masher started very poorly but his second half was mostly awesome. He does however have a terrible tendency to throw himself towards opponents without any thought.

Carragher and Kyrgiakos improved after the break as well and particularly the former made several important challenges but their use of the ball is cringe-worthy at times. Hoof and then some more hoof.

Torres like Masher, Carra and Kyrgiakos looked a different player after the break and certainly underlined why you never should sub your world class striker when you are in need of a goal or two. No matter how bleak he's looked during a game he'll score you goals.

Reina - 7

Johnson - 6
Carra - 7
Kyrgiakos - 7
Agger - 8

Kuyt - 9
Lucas - 8
Masher - 7
Gerrard - 7
Yossi - 7

Torres - 8 (before the break he was a 2 mind)

It's funny how unbiased most people are.
So little time, so many agendas.
I'm not unbiased at all.

And I'm rather stubborn too.

And blinkered perhaps.

That said Agger was amongst our top 5 performers last night and it just amazed me that no one this site had given him any credit at all. Apart from Sheik I reckon it was who gave him a mention but no-one had him in their top three - which in all honesy almost looked as agenda-like as when I'm praisining him ahead of others.

There were even posteres who gave Johnson (who's one of my favourite players mind) a higher rating and truth to be told he was rather average last night.

It's amazing how we can all watch the same game but at the same time see something completely different.

KHL, you say people are on an agenda and then you rip into every other defender and put Agger on a pedestal. I thought he had a good game, but if you want to talk about the hairy first 30 minutes, it's fair to say Benfica kept forcing him onto his right foot whenever they could and he then kept having to turn onto his left and back to Reina everytime. So it wasn't all great for any of the back four. Overall I thought he did well, he supported well and gave us positional sense, which has been lacking there all season.

Ok im watching the whole game again on sky+ here and ive just finished the first half. I know its fasionable to hate Lucas, and even some good posters and knowledgable football fans are now becoming blinded to anything the lad does well.
Ha ha I don't know who is the saddest Oncey.
I am not becoming blinded , I think he did OK, I really do, but not as well as you think he did.
I said I think the game passed him by a bit up until his goal, and your stats sort of back that up. In the first half hour of the game he was involved thirteen times, not a lot for a holding midfield player whose team were under the cosh for much of that time.
For the remaining fifteen minutes of the half he was involved as much as the first half hour, thirteen times.

5.09 - Lucas and Mascherano win ball of Luiz
6.00 - Wins ball off Di Maria
8.00 - Wins ball in centre circle
9.11 - Flicks ball over the top to Nando. Offside

10.01 - Wins header in Midfield
10.57 - Wins header in Midfield
13.11 - Pass to Mascherano
16.13 - Ball over the top for Gerrard. Defender clears
18.54 - Pass to Johnson
19.45 - Wins ball on the edge of the D runs over halfway line passes to Gerrard
22.45 - Loses header on the edge of the area
24.20 - Heads ball out of box
25.00 - Pass to Yossi

30.30 - Wins ball. Interception.
32.00 - Wins free kick off Aimar
33.13 - GOAL
35.21 - Wins tackle but cant maintain possession
35.47 - Loses header
36.31 - Pass to Agger
38.15 - Wins header
38.59 - Wins tackle
40.42 - Wins tackle
41.50 - Wins header
42.41 - Clears ball off the line with a backheel
43.10 - Heads ball clear from resulting corner
44.28 - Pass to johnson.

I give credit were it is due, I am not a great admirer of Dirk, but gave him MOM tonight, I try and be reasoned, and objective.

regards

I don't think anyone played poorly really, so saying he was one of our worst players (though I've not looked at Keni's ratings) is harsh, I just don't think he stood out to the degree that others did, he did his job well, quietly and efficiently, held his position in a fairly unfamiliar role.

The only overboard mark is giving Gerrard 4. Yeah he's had a poor season but he's shown glimpses of late and he played an excellent through ball for Lucas and he put in a great setpiece delivery for most of the game (and for Kuyt's goal) so 4 is just fucking ridiculous.

Reina 7
GJ 7
Carra 8
Greek 7
Agger 7
Kuyt 8
Lucas 7
Mascher 7
Benayoun 7
Gerrard 7
Torres 8 MOM

Rafa 6. Well done Rafa, you didnt sub Torres too early

Reina 7 - Ever reliable presence, solid and commanding.

Johnson 7 - Supported and defended well. The defensive side of his game has really come on of late.
Carra 7 - Like Reina, a dependable presence and put himself in where it hurt, save one clumsy challenge in the first half.
Greek 7.5 - Looks a good buy on recent evidence. Commanding and again, not scared to get stuck in.
Agger 7 - Solid performance in an unfamiliar role, gave us balance and positional sense on the left.

Masher 8 - Excellent display of ferocious ball winning and good distribution, particularly for THE goal of the game.
Lucas 8 - Like Masher he threw himself into tackles, and I was delighted to see him tuck that chance away. Should get forward more.
Gerrard 7 - Two assists and some great deliveries. Not at his best but getting there.

Kuyt 8.5 - MOTM Excellent display, never gave up and gave us a good creative edge, excellent for the third goal.
Yossi 7.5 - Good running and his best display on the left, caused problems and played a big part in Lucas' goal and Torres' first.

Torres 8 - Sulky but ran the channels, defended, attacked and scored two wonderful goals. That's why he's there.

KHL - Agger was solid but he wasn't better than anyone else. I think you know that too. Keni, if I remember correctly, only said that he's not a long term solution to LB ... I don't think he said anything that negative about him.

Re: Lucas and Agendas - there is none. He wasn't great, as Herr "No Agenda" claimed (and has now backed down from the '9'). He was ok which is why he's getting 7s from most posters. I would wait to see how Brendan rates him as he IS Mr. Agenda with Lucas.

Re: Franky - Why the silence when you were asked about Gerrard's assist on Lucas's goal? That's not a 'sublime' pass. He's had a poor season by HIS standards but you make it out as if he's playing at Salif Diao's level.

Lastly, why does Yossi get a 7.5 Mark? I mean, Vlad & I both noted it was probably amongst his best performances as a LW - but that's not saying much. But 7.5? He had one fantastic pass which Kuyt bettered for Torres's assist, but what else?

Reina 7 - solid and commanding

Johnson 6 - not his best performance but stood strong

Carra 8 - marshalled the defence brilliantly, some vital tackles and interceptions

Greek 8 - the big beast never put a foot wrong. takes no shit

Agger 7 - very good considering he was out of position. he dropped a little deep at times but still impressive

Kuyt 9 - tireless throughout. held the ball and used it intelligently. great goal and wonderful assist

Lucas 7 - beautiful goal. be great to see him bomb forward more. some great crunching tackles too

Mascherano 8 - his passing is improving with every game. lovely ball for Torres's goal. another fine display

Benayoun 8 - one of his best performances this season. worked his nuts off and played a part in Torres's 1st goal.

Gerrard 4 - a shadow of his former self. where was the glorious shooting, the classy touches and passes? sad sight 🙁

Torres 8 - far from his best but still give him the ball in and around the box and he's lethal. 2nd goal was vintage Torres.
What a man.
