Pre Match Pre Match - PSG (A) - Weds 20:00

They walk the French league / cups most years with their billionaire squad…but always come unstuck - given their season is otherwise devoid of tough fixtures - against top European sides over two legs in this competition.

It’ll be tough but I’m confident we’ll do a professional job on them. They face nothing like our Slot machine week on week and will be ultimately overawed by us…not the other way around.

I’m torn between wanting to see Jota for an added attacking threat, given their defence is the weakest part of the team, and the two #10’s structure that was so solid against Man City. In the end, I would probably go for Jota up top and task Gravenberch with babysitting Trent, while Macca drops into the #6 as needed.

With psg having some fucking deadly wingers, I want Trent alone as little as possible. Maybe the 2 10s is the way to go

I think this PSG team is different to the previous versions.
Firstly, they have gotten rid of the players who had a more self centered approach and built a younger and more hard working team.
Secondly, they have a very talented side that play fast attacking football with some rapid wingers. There are technical players with pace in just every area.
Should be a good game for the neutrals but I think we need to see a very good defensive effort from our end.

Away game. No need for a Barca style recovery S.v.P. I'd be happy with a draw and move on to Anfield. Just a solid professional performance.

Sometimes people need reminding that PSG want no part of us. Yeah it's going to be tough, yeah they've got "names" but in the end, we're better.
Yes we are. If we play a professional game over two legs. I'm confident Slot has the nouse.

I completely agree. In both games, Salah and Díaz will need to track back throughout and support the full-backs. Fortunately, we face Southampton between the ties - who aren't much stronger than the crap teams PSG regularly dispatches, so we should be able to fully commit to this fixture and match their intensity.

The thing that sways me to Jota is that he’s pretty great at pressing as well. So you can have best of both worlds with him, hopefully.

I think PSG’s attack is truly frightening - if you let them get in the groove and come at you wave after wave, they will rip any defence to shreds, including ours. And if you’re sloppy in possession, they can punish you on the counter as well.

What hasn’t been tested for them is their overall balance - how will they cope with having to defend against the likes of Salah while also playing their attacking game, can they build up from the back under an elite press and sustain the intensity for 90 minutes. This will be a big test of Slot’s and our team’s ability to manage the game - we need to make sure they never get into the groove, get frustrated and eventually get ground down by a more mature team. It’s doable, but the risk is also real.

Well yeah, I'm not saying that they're Stoke City.
PSG is a good team, but Man C made them look ordinary for one half before they self destructed.

Arne Slot has said Liverpool must present the best possible version of themselves to advance beyond Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, although Luis Enrique fears “the three fighter jets” in the Premier League leaders’ attack.

The Liverpool head coach admitted he would have preferred to have avoided the French champions in the draw for the last 16 as, on recent form, they are “one of the strongest teams in Europe”.

PSG have won their past 10 games in all competitions, scoring 40 times in the process. While the draw is little reward to Liverpool for winning the group stage, Slot believes it is an occasion his players will relish as they continue their pursuit of three trophies in his debut season.

“We would have preferred to play against Benfica instead of PSG,” said Slot, who has an injury doubt over Cody Gakpo for the first leg on Wednesday night. “But this is also a great fixture to play and it’s a great stadium to play. If you are playing for Liverpool you want to play big games. We are facing a very strong opponent – they are as well.

“We will have to show up in every part of the game and give the best possible performance of the season. It is not easy to press PSG because they go man-for-man all over the pitch. Against Arsenal earlier in the season PSG were not as aggressive as they have been in the last 10-15 games. We have to be the best possible version of ourselves. PSG are one of the best teams in Europe, with so much attacking threat and so much rotation. It will be an interesting game.”

The mantle of best team in Europe can be applied to Liverpool with their 13-point lead in the Premier League and place in the Carabao Cup final. Slot, however, believes his side need to win the club’s seventh European crown to confirm that status.

“It’s a nice compliment to get but the best team in Europe has to win the Champions League and we are far away from that,” he said. “I think the best team in Europe is still Real Madrid because they won this competition last season. For us, we have to win it before you can say this.”

Enrique, who guided PSG to the semi-finals last season, was effusive in his praise of Slot’s impact since succeeding Jürgen Klopp. “Liverpool has one of the best counterattacks in Europe so we will try to keep the ball and be careful not to suffer too much from transitions,” the PSG coach said.

“They have three fighter jets in attack and it’s not easy to stop these fighter jets. Arne Slot has done a great job. He has created a near‑perfect team, which knows how to defend, knows how to press, which can attack either by holding the ball or accelerating.”

The former coach of Champions League‑winning Barcelona believes the intimidating atmosphere in Paris could be a factor on Wednesday. “It is hard for our opponents to play at the Parc des Princes with the pressure and the atmosphere at the stadium. If we can play as we have been, it will be very tough for our opponents.”

I don’t think our players will be phased by that shit hole in a shit hole city.

I trust VVD Konate and Grav to snuff out counter-attacks, but if they're starting to regularly isolate our fullbacks then we're conceeding goals. We're going to need all action performances from our wingers and 8's to support them, especially in the first leg. I'd say man for man we're better but their strengths are also our weakest areas, so Slot is going have to mitigate them. It's not just a case of 'playing our game' as it were. Thankfully both he and the team have proven to be flexible and adaptable all season.

They're used to playing the high-press and probably will not be used to teams who can consistently get through it, so long balls by VVD to Salah or some decent interplay around the box and we could be released.

PSG will be dangerous in both ties, but if we can go back to Anfield level then it would be a sizable shock if they beat us there.

Liverpool make just the one change from their win over Newcastle at left-back with Andy Robertson coming back in for Kostas Tsimikas.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Salah, Diaz, Jota.

Three changes for Paris St-Germain from the side who beat Lille 4-1 at the weekend.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Willian Pacho and Vitinha replace Lucas Beraldo, Desire Doue and Goncalo Ramos.

PSG XI: Donnarumma, Hakimi, Pacho, Marquinhos, Mendes, Vitinha, Ruiz, Neves, Dembele, Barcola, Kvaratskhelia.

Strongest eleven all fit and available, 7 days rest, second leg at home, and Southampton between the games.

It's a tough tie, but we couldn't ask for better circumstances to beat them. There's no legit excuses to not turn up.
