After watching that, are still convinced Toure was at fault for the 3 Stoke goals?

I hope not...

No one goal, the first one.

The 2nd one was a combo between Henderson misplacing a pass and Gerrard slipping. Also, no one made the effort to pick up Adam's run.

The 3rd one started off as a mistake from Lucas and Gerrard due to miscommunication or sloppiness but where were the defenders? Where was Johnson? Why didn't Touré stay closer to their striker?

Also, Touré was beaten in the air a few times by Crouch. That chance when he hit the post for instance.

That is just amazing. Look at Suarez's GPG. I'd just love him to wreck that record, take Player of the Season (players and journos) and win the Ballon d'Or, European Golden Shoe & UEFA Best Player in Europe Award for good measure. Can see Sturridge edging into the lower reaches of that league too - if he can stay fit. Naturally it would also mean us taking the title for Team of the Year too 😉

Peter Crouch winning a few headers against Kolo?? Is that such a criminal offence?? The fucker is 6 foot 7 inches for gods sake!!! FWIW I thought they didn't do too badly against the aerial bombardment.......... The second and third goals were just silly individual errors higher up the pitch that caught us out. The first goal was definitely a defensive error, we (as a unit) were too deep allowing a glancing header from a player running away from goal to find the net. Whether Kolo is individually responsible for that I'm not so sure.

So I guess its OK to lose aerial duels a few times in the box. You know I hope they score every time we lose those aerial duels as well. No biggie, Suarez will get us the win anyway.

I thought Gerrard was great today.
It looked to me like this was Mr Rodgers first attempt at playing an inverted triangle with just Gerrard deep and Henderson and Lucas advanced. Obviously Henderson has played advanced all season but for Lucas it looked much tougher to adapt.
I thought first half he tried hard to get forward and broke into the box but second half looked lost.
I like it as an idea as Lucas will still try to break up play and win the ball back further up the pitch and I think that position really suits Gerrard. Today he worked his socks off, broke up play, built attacks, tracked runners. I thought he was brilliant.
Allen will be better suited to the Lucas position long term but I really liked the idea.

I'm kinda with spaghetti on this one.

Lucas isn't mobile enough to be further forward in the "Allen" role.

Gerrard isn't as good at Lucas sitting in front of the defence mopping up.

Lucas doesn't have anywhere near the passing range of Gerrard, so you can see the attraction in playing Gerrard there.

The problem is Gerrard is it Xabi Alonso & Lucas is not Javier Mascherano.

Sometimes, people lose aerial battles. These players are not robots. Even Sami lost duels. Sorry to have to break it to you dude.
Peter Crouch is a massive handful, and he will win more than he loses. The one he scored from was a low glancing header which was due to poor positioning from the back line in general. The others he won didn't end up as goals thankfully.
We won't play against a side as physical and dangerous in the air again all season. Give thanks and move on to Villa.

I don't think losing the aerial duels with Crouch was the problem. It was more a positioning issue...we were far too deep and as Carra alluded too in his analysis...if you let Crouch attack crosses close to goal it's asking for trouble.
Example being his goal and other near misses involving Crouch's knockdowns etc!

We definitely played with fire too many times against Stoke.

I often read these post-match threads and think I must have watched a different game to some of you.

Many of the opinions in here are ridiculous.

For fuck's sake people, we're within a shout of winning the league, playing a style football I haven't seen a Liverpool side play in decades, and are ripping most sides apart. On top of that, we've got a bit of cunt about us which means we don't go to places like Stoke anymore and roll over cos they have a go.

Sure there are things to fix, but what side doesn't have that?

Lighten the fuck up people, things are pretty good right now.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his team will still be challenging for the title at the end of the season following Sunday’s 5-3 win over Stoke City.

The victory was the Reds’ first Premier League win at the Britannia Stadium and lifts them back into fourth place in the table, just five points behind leaders Manchester City.

Speaking after the match Rodgers suggested Liverpool’s fixture list for the rest of the campaign makes the strong candidates to fight for the title.

"When asked if anything was possible this season, Rodgers told reporters: "Yes, absolutely. We entered into the game today, 18 games to go, nine at home, nine away, knowing seven of those nine away were against teams in the bottom half.

“That doesn't mean they are gimmes by any means – it is a very tough league – but certainly we have shown enough that we are going to be challenging and that is all we ever wanted to be.

“We never stated we are going to win the league, to jump from where we have been at, we just needed to be in the conversation."

This time, I don't want to analyze the game in the slightest. No ratings, no tactics talk. Those kinds of games are why Premier League is the the best league in the world. This was pure unadulterated craziness. Let's enjoy it.

Haha we're fucked.

It's an issue, but there are not many times that Kolo will come up against a striker the size of Crouch (he's not the only top defender to struggle against him). We lost aerial battles all over the pitch, the good thing about our play in general is that we gave Stoke a kicking back, their record at home is so good because they're so difficult to play against. Lucas lost 6 of 7 aerial duals and aside from Gerrard, we didn't mop things up too well infront of the back four. Add that Johnson continuously allowed balls to be whipped in from our right, the defense were constantly exposed to dangerous balls deep into the box - which is Stokes game.

Apart from his ridiculously shit short passing today, which is very uncharacteristic of him, I thought he did his job.
The problem was that Lucas had to then play in a position he will never succeed in so the midfield was disjointed. Having Allen there instead of Lucas, with Stevie deep may well work. Stevie certainly didn't desert his holding role during the game, which I was pleased to see.
Once he's match fit, he'll cut out the errors and we'll finally once again have a deep lying playmaker with two very active midfielders ahead of him.

Agree whole heartedly that Gerrard didn't desert his role - he was disciplined which we've often complained about in the past.

His passing, however, particularly his long passing was utter nonsense. He looked like he'd had a year off rather than a month the way he was hitting them. He hit one good long pass - to Johnson.... and even that was a little over hit. He hasn't played so many poor passes in one game during my life time.

As for the suggestion that he can't play the DM role - we all know that's not true. His long passing thus far this season has been better than Alonso. People have this concept that a DM role is something specific. Alonso wasn't a DM the way Makelele was yet people rave about his play. Makelele intercepted and broke up play like no other but he couldn't pass like Alonso in a million years. Alonso was light years behind in breaking up play, he could hold the ball as well as Claude and pass better than the Chav could ever dream.

Gerrard can't intercept anything like as well as Alonso (or Lucas for that matter), he can tackle far better than the Spanish maestro and can pass just as well. The idea that he can't work out how to play a different role is an insult to him. He mastered the AM role like few others in the leagues history, he walked in and became a world beater at RM, he was dropped in at left wing to accommodate England and Liverpool but still pulled it off and then, against a super hot AC Milan he was parachuted into RB and dominated the game from there. Gerrard can read a football game like few others - which is why the DM role is the hardest for him. He can see almost everything from that role and wants to do it then and there. This is where the discipline problem becomes real.

I still want to see him further forward but it would appear that's not going to happen.

As a side note, Lucas created little going forward but still put in the best tackles throughout the 90 minutes.

That's ridiculous. It is ok if one or two aerial duels are lost just as it's ok that a shot from Suarez or Sturridge doesn't go in or a misplaced pass from Coutinho. No player can be perfect.

You're just being biased towards any player that isn't on your 'favourite' list, made a rash comment and now trying to justify it.
