Pepe Reina Slams Barry And Tevez For Not Joining Liverpool
There are more important things that money, insists the Spanish international...
5 Jul 2009 08:26:25

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has reportedly hit out at Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez for their decisions not to move to Anfield.

Former Aston Villa skipper Barry was a long-term transfer target for the Reds but spurned their advances to sign for Manchester City earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Tevez was also linked with a move to Merseyside but now appears on the brink of following Barry to Eastlands.

However, speaking to the News of the World the Spanish international has slammed the pair, claiming they moved only for money and that he is surprised by their decision to turn down Rafael Benitez’s side.

“Apparently, they moved for the money. That is their decision but I also think it is their problem if they cannot see that Liverpool is a bigger club,†said the 'keeper.

“It's up to them what they do but let me tell them that I am very proud to play for Liverpool. We can offer European football and I think that should have been a consideration for them.

“Everybody knows what it is to play for Liverpool. It's a pleasure and a tremendous honour. I am surprised they didn't consider these things.

"Some things in a player's career should be more important than money.â€

Reina also claimed his side could go one better that last season and win the Premier League title.

“At Liverpool, you have to be fighting for the title and that's what we will be doing this year,†he added.

“We are involved in four competitions and just targeting one of them is not enough. The big one of the Premier League would definitely be best.â€

He's got a great attitude. I wish he'd smack some sense into Xabi.

Why target Xabi and ignore Mascher?

Agree about Reina though; he and Torres are the high watermark, both as players and as people.

I still recon we could snatch Tevez.

There would be nothing better to avenge his Fergie-angst, even if he had to burn his Scum fan base.

Make him captain.

He'd be a great captain.

I still harbour thoughts like that, let's make an offer he can't refuse 😀

I think you're probably right that we're still in the running for him. If we are, I can't help wondering whether this latest little outburst (ill-judged though it seems to me) is part of some kind of effort to prepare the ground for a possible move to Anfield.

He's referred to the difficulty such a move would cause, but I'm not aware of a single direct quote from him ruling it out altogether, though Joorabchian's been heard (not by me) to do so once. Either way, words are just that, words. Actions are what count, and words can be part of a preparation (or one of Rafa's famous "smokescreens&quot😉 for the events which follow. This isn't over yet IMO.

City and United LOATH each other, its really bad, in the 70's and 80's there used to be lots of fans getting put in hospital after the gang fights.

Uniteds hatred of us was borne on jelously, we are better, they always played catch up, that is why they hate us, they believe they are the biggest and best club in the world, and they weren't even the best in England.

If he chooses either they will hate him.

If Owen chose Everton, I doubt many here would have given a shit.

In the rest of that interview, Reina also said he believed that Rafa has no intention of selling Xabi and Mascher:

Reina is confident the club will keep hold of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.

Reina's Spanish team-mate Xabi Alonso has been strongly linked with Real Madrid, while Barcelona are thought to be courting Mascherano.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez has rejected speculation linking the pair with moves out of Anfield and Reina believes his manager has no plans to sell the pair as he builds a side capable of challenging for the Premier League title.

"I believe that he [Benitez] has his mind very clear and his idea in these moments is to not sell," Reina told EFE.

"He wants to continue with a team he has known for a long time, with an already fundamented base and where we know almost everything.

"Whoever wants to touch this team or this structure [liverpool] will have to pay a lot of money."

I have an incling we have Tevez in the bag.. If reports are to be believed Xabi will be off in a few weeks once Sociadad's deadline passes for them getting 20% of the fee, and then I think we'll announce Tevez coming in with the Xabi 25mill.. Just a hunch

Torres Tevez upfront would be ideal though, I can't think of a better partner for Fernando

I can, his name is Steven Gerrard. He scores 20+ goals a season.
