Well they don't 'have' to start at all. Do Chelsea, United, City have only 6 automatic starters for 6 slots ? If you want to be considered a top team you need more than 6 for 6, especially when injury and other issues (loss of form, suspensions, changes in formation, substitutions) are considered. Maybe 8/9 for 6 is about right. For the team as a whole I'd want 15/16 players that could / should be starting most games with the rest of the squad there as support.

Chelsea isnt a good example as they've got 6-8 players that bar injuries are always starting.
Courthouis, Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Matic, Fabregas, Willian, Hazard.

City and Utd have fewer players in that respect this season but thats down to injuries imho.
They'll also have 6-7 players who when fit will start.

@Hansern. You have missed my point I fear, or I wasn't precise enough. The top teams have 15/16 players that could/should be starting most games. We don't and I don't see an issue with having competition for places, isn't that what every team strives for ?

They dont have that many, Hansern is right. Anything beyond around 8 players and youre talking about guys who are on the fringe

How do we know this ? There seems to be a lot of talk about reverting to the formations used during our 2nd place season, namely 442 diamond and 433. Which makes sense because we know BR actually prefers 442 and have bought in Clyne who isn't a WB. Chatter re a replacement LB for Enrique too, which if true would endorse that theory.

There's no sign of a plan. The signings and targets seem unbelievably unfocused.

I listed players who really HAVE to be starting, either because of established credentials or because of the resources expended. 7 for 6 positions seems too much, even with Sturridge being injury prone, because it leaves so little opportunity for those below them.

And also because it's a misallocation, as we have other positions very under-resourced.

Chelsea reported to have agreed to meet £22m buy out clause - Daily Star

Damn. Pedro would have been decent for us. He'll add pace, goals and versatility to Chelsea.

Spanish journo I think. Follows Barca

@RafaelH117: Liverpool has contacted Pedro to discuss a possible move to the Premier League. This one I can confirm, nothing from Chelsea yet.

Liverpool are certainly wasting no time in spending the money from the sale of Raheem Sterling and are set to activate the release clause in Barcelona winger Pedro‘s contract.
The Reds are on the transfer market as they seek a replacement for Sterling, who completed his move to Premier League rivals Manchester City earlier in the week in a deal worth a reported £49million [via BBC Sport], and according to reports in Spain [via Metro Sport] they look set to battle Chelsea for the signing of Pedro from the Liga BBVA champions.

The 27-year-old’s future at the Camp Nou is uncertain following the arrival of Arda Turan [via BBC Sport], which will mean even more competition for a place in Luis Enrique’s starting XI in the upcoming season.
Last season, Pedro had to make way for Luis Suarez in Barca’s star-studded forward line that also includes Lionel Messi and Neymar, which resulted in a host of substitute appearances for the Spaniard. Despite his lack of starts he was still able to weigh in six goals and assists including a vital strike against Real Sociedad which inched Barca closer to the title.

He is still regarded as a important part of the squad by manager Enrique, but that has not stopped links with a move to England and a reunion with former club teammate Cesc Fabregas [via Metro Sport].

However, the Merseyside outfit have now emerged as potential suitors for Pedro and are prepared to take advantage of Chelsea’s refusal to match his £20.9 million release-clause.
The news comes hot on the heels of reports that the Reds have triggered Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke’s £32.5 million buy-out clause [via Liverpool Echo] as they close in on the signing of the player who scored against the club in the FA Cup semi-final back in April, which denied former captain Steven Gerrard a chance to finish his career in England with a trophy.
