journalism made easy with four easy steps

step 1: insert name of player, the more high profile the player the better.
e.g. eto'o

step 2: insert name of buying club, the more money the buying club the better.
e.g. man city

step 3: pluck figure from the sky, making sure it isn't a round number to give the figure more weight.
e.g. 31 mill (rather than 30 million)

step 4: mix the above together (qoutes from player or club unnecessary) and like magic you have filled inches on the sports column with minimal effort, no sources and no qoutes just in time for a long lunch

Is Adebayor really 25, or an African 25?

What's the difference. They all look the same don't they?

'No more transfers to United', says Ferguson

By Simon Stone, Press Association

Monday, 13 July 2009

Alex Ferguson: 'Young players with ability always get a chance here'

Sir Alex Ferguson handed Michael Owen the prized Manchester United number seven shirt and then declared Old Trafford closed for transfer business.

It was anticipated Ferguson would make further signings in addition to Owen, Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan, who joined last week from Bordeaux.

But, faced with a market over-inflated by Real Madrid and Manchester City, Ferguson has decided his current squad is good enough to challenge for an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title, even though Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez have left.

"It is the end of our business, so all these stories about who were are supposed to be getting - forget it," he said.

It means Owen will take over Ronaldo's shirt and his place in an attacking line-up containing Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, plus youngsters Daniel Welbeck and Federico Macheda, who will both be given a chance to prove they are worthy of the accolades that have been bestowed on them.

"They are both young players," he added, "but young players with ability always get a chance here."

Ferguson confirmed he made a bid for Karim Benzema, only to be rebuffed by the Lyon man, who instead became part of Real Madrid's extraordinary spending spree.

With a world record £80million burning a hole in his pocket following the sale of Ronaldo, United had the funds to compete.

But Ferguson refuses to be drawn into a bidding war for any player beyond the level he thinks is acceptable.

"There are some amazing numbers being talked about, not all of them realistic," he said. "It is very difficult to get value now. In a way we benefited through the sale of Cristiano, although that figure was non-negotiable.

"But I feel we have a good squad, which meant there was no need for knee-jerk reactions. We asked about Benzema and we had a value for him. Lyon have done well because they got €42million but I think we took a sensible view."

Fantastic news...if true.

Wow. I didn't expect that at all.

He must think his squad will step up.

I don't believe it for a minute. He wasn't in the market for Benzema because he thought that the Utd squad were good enough.

I think they will buy again and probably buy big if there is anyone left after Man City and Real.

In this market Adebayor would be a bargain at £20M

Arsenal should hold out for a lot more.

I didn't know United had signed Obertan.. Good player.....according to FM

Very strange that Fergie only signs Owen, Valencia and Obertan. It makes them look very much weaker, at least on paper.

Obertan has potential, but is very very raw. He wasn't even ready for a top side in France. Could go either way, and you won't see him making much impact this year.

Valencia is a good winger and Owen is injury prone hasbeen. Strange.

heh.

ferguson has been looking over Moyes' shoulder.

Don't believe Taggart for 1 second. He'll spend 50mil on a player then say "well I didn't intend to sign anyone".

In fairness nobody could have predicted United would spend very little .......

Nobody could have looked at their last two sets of accounts and told people on here that they need to balance the books after two years of heavy losses.

Aboslutely nobody.

Smart arse fucker. I just hope they sign someone for £30 million just to prove you wrong.
Someone like Lucas......

Nobody takes any notice of what I say anyway.

I feel like Vantage.

I referenced your 'debt' discussions over the page Rosco ya big gay bear.

I was waiting for you to log on and get the trumpet out. Ha!

What I don't understand though, is why are they after Adebayor aswell? Are they going to play 2-3-5???
You desperatly need centre backs and a couple of midfielders Sparky.

Tevez is now officially a money grabbing cunt of the highest order.

Heh, so much for the possibility of Tevez coming to Liverpool. Who was it that kept banging on about that?

why join Liverpool when you can join City!

I'm glad the moaning mercenary has ended up there

can't wait for Hughes excuses next season when they get turned over "in fairness I think we played well... we just had problems adjusting to the climate but I think once we do then we'll do better"

Ok.. so Owen, Valencia and Obertan? What?

I'm not even sure a club like Sunderland's fans would settle with that trio as their only signings prior to a new Season.

Even though we've only made one real signing I'm convinced we've done better on the market compared to United already.

The question remains; What on earth is Sir Alex thinking?

Or will he soon enough reveal a £40M singing in e.g. Aguero to make amends?

If not then they'd struggle to keep up with the best (e.g. us). Important players like Giggs and Scholes are not exactly getting any younger and in no way will their new trio make up for the losses of Ronaldo and Tevez so they'd be extremely reliant on more wondergoals from 17-year-olds and a complete injury-free Season.

Utd have this fucking soul destroying habit of winning consistently and even when you think they are weak.

They are the team to beat until proven otherwise.

Well it was a distinct possibility, and a stronger link than most of the shite that floats around.
