Also, the European Cup final has become an event. People watch it even if their team isn't playing. It's probably only second to the world cup final in terms of global audience (I don't count the superbowl, it can get to fuck). Especially now that it's on a Saturday night and no longer on a Wednesday (I thought that was a bad move, I'm happy to say that I was wrong).
Mad that when you think about it.. That's exactly how the FA cup was when I was a kid, in the UK..

The TV would be on all day dedicated to the FA Cup Final...

All season, it was the league I wanted, and CL was just a diversion. I saw us win the league so often as a boy, wanted to see it happen once with my sons. They understand the history and the desire for the league - but the 2 were almost interchangeable for them. So I am content. Here in Virginia there is a lot of TV coverage, and the boys I coach were aware of my allegiances, but it was the CL they focused on. Barcelona is the mot popular team in my town, so some of the boys were less than happy when I coached in an LFC jersey the night of the comeback.

The problem they have yet to experience though is players leaving because they have not won the CL. Once that kicks in then they will realise it's importance. Has anyone read that interview with our owner lately ? - he thinks we have won the BIG ONE, and winning the league is really something for us fans, and will be a priority next season. I actually think for many of our players the CL was more important than the league as it is recognised by the world as the main club competition for the very best. Not sure if the foreign players actually grow up wanting to win the PL, or any other domestic league competition, I think the big one is the CL.

As long as they have the channels to route monies to the players account as "second" wages which are not reported in official club expenses, they wont have problem with players leaving.

I said this a few months ago after I heard Salah in an interview. When asked which he preferred to win. He basically said the CL was important for him, but he wanted to win the league for the fans too.

The CL is definitely more important for all the foreign lads and the owners.

When you think about American sports and JW Henry. They look at it like the "league season" is just qualifier for the big money "playoff" competition that is the CL. All American sports is generally seen that way. Like you can finish top of the table in the "Eastern conference" , but that's only really seen as getting a better seed in the "NBA playoffs", for the actual championship.

Winning the CL was always the goal for our owners. The question is, with us continually being competitive for that and in the top 4, how much will they care to push the boat out for us to win the league, when they don't really have to.

No doubt for the foreign players, CL is much more important than the league. I remember a Salah interview where they were discussing him being the first Egyptian and the third Arab to win the champions league and how much it meant to him and the community. I think if he had a choice between winning the CL again and winning the league, he might prefer winning the CL again.

I think that is the case with most clubs. We are an anomaly of a club which has done reasonably well in the CL (4 finals in since 2005) without winning the league. I am reasonably confident, Juve fans will be willing to exchange 5 of their 10 Serie A wins for a champions league.

We have European competition DNA. Irrespective of how poor our squad is, how bad the odds are, there is always a quite confidence about the club that we can find solutions in a two legged tie. You cannot buy that and it is a major reason why we do so well relative to our squad quality. I also think that is why we will always be attractive to promising continental managers. We are a location where they can achieve their CL dreams. Klopp and Hitzfield are the only two German managers who have won the CL with clubs outside of Bayern, Madrid, Barcelona.

It's still on for a fair while isn't it? Admittedly, I haven't watched it for years for obvious reasons.

No doubt it's been hugely diminished in every way, though. I remember watching Spurs vs Coventry (Houchennnnnnnn!) and it seemed like the entire country was too.

When I was a kid, cup day felt like a huge deal even all the way down here in SA. It seemed like everyone was watching and making a day of it. People who usually had no interest in football would be just as wrapped up in it all as the ardent fans. It felt as big as the World Cup.

Now that I think about it, it's entirely possible that this was just my impression as a child as that's what my family and neighbours did.

True, but on the other hand Americans seem to place a lot of value on domestic titles. That's all US sports are. The 'World Series' of Baseball, The NFL playoffs, NBA...sports doesn't exist outside of the American leagues, and if they do, like the Basketball World Cup, they are entirely ignored.

And rightly so.

The issue is basically that the country is large - so teams split up into divisions, otherwise when sports weren't lucrative, teams would have to drive around thousands and thousands of miles. That and there being multiple original leagues in some cases.

That, and not having Liverpool play Man City for the title in a one off game to decide the league is leaving many millions on the table, even if its at the expense of the regular fan, and that's positively unamerican.

Same here. I wore my Liverpool top to tryouts the Monday following the CL final and other than a few well educated kids (ie my own children) everyone was a Barca fan and thought we just got lucky.

So I wore it again the next night. After a wash.

I was speaking to a City fan yesterday who was trying to give me stick over the league, had to remind him that we were SIX TIME European Champions, that shut him up.

He said to me would I swap the CL for the League and I said yeah of course I would, I asked him the reverse, would he swap the League for the CL, and he said he’d rather City lost every game in Europe to win the league as the league is the most important.

Why are City fans such mongs.

You second mistake was admitting you’d swap no6 for the league

Yep. When I was a kid (long time ago !) it was huge. The whole street decked out in colours, flags and pennants, pet cats & dogs with ribbons tied around their necks, and the budgie named Shankly. I remember everyone would gather at whoever's house had the biggest tellie. Sarnies, sausages on sticks, pop and crisps galore. Obviously lots of beer and booze. It was a real community gatherings - except for the Blues of course, until their turn came around.

The good old days. *cue violin*.

I don’t see much wrong with it. An innocent form of communication with teammates. It’s not like he’s carrying an Xbox and monitor into the club.
Yes, I don't see what's wrong with that picture either. I actually think it's fun.

Mate, I fucking love you, but have no fucking idea what you’re on about here

Ha well first of all talking to City fans was your first mistake 😉

Your second one was admitting you’d swap the CL for the league.

Any rival fan from any club that asks I simply ask they are right in the head. Who’s swap a domestic title for essentially a world title with the CL.

When you don’t admit you’d prefer the league they have nowhere to go
