We have Poulson now Spider. LB and CF are more pressing than Cm right now.

Don't worry everyone, our midfield is now worse on paper than last year, when it was just fantastic.

Those other positions are a matter of urgency, but I don't see how you can look at our midfield, which, when Gerrard is injured, will have no balance or real quality, and think well, that's sorted. I can't believe we've gone from Alonso-Gerrard-Mascherano to Gerrard-Poulson-Aquilani or Gerrard-Poulson-Lucas or Gerrard-Poulsen-Cole, in the space of two years.

At the beginning of last season, on paper, we were the 2nd best team in the country. Paper is overrated.

Hleb is a good player but the way his situation currently is with Barca he'd be available for £10mil, and Mascherano is probably worth around £30mil. £20mil + Hleb would be a good deal, less than that would be us being mugged.

Don't agree with the sentimentality towards Masch on here. The bloke has been after a move for 18 months and openly courted other teams. Allied to that, of late, he only starts playing well when it suits, i.e. when someone's sniffing round him.
He needs to remember where his career was when we picked him up.
Also, even if his wife is having problems, which I have always assumed is an excuse anyway, if that was me, I wouldn't be bringing it to my employer as the reason I wanted out. It's pretty weak that, hiding behind his wife as a get-out clause.
This statement this week is nothing more than an exercise to keep the fans on side should his 'dream' move fall through. Expect a similar one from Torres next summer (who is probably only here now because his potential suitors have spent all their cash).

Oh, and 15mil plus Hleb is a crap deal. Hleb was never that good.

------------Torres---------
Hleb---------------------Kuyt----
-------Gerrard---Cole--------
------------Poulsen--------

Perhaps Cole is going to play centrally with Gerrard after all?

Either way, we'll have a lots of creative options, but not many footballers you would back to score 12 goals+
Kuyt Sqiggs? I would have thought he was probably at least third choice behind Jovo and Maxi for a wide position.

At the beginning of last season, I was very concerned we'd have issues due to ripping the heart out of our midfield and not having a replacement. I also knew we'd broadcast to the whole world that we were going backwards due to our financial state.

On paper there were issues.

Ps-I believe this to be horshit. Swap deals almost never happen.
I beg to differ

-Owen deal we got nunez in return + cash

-Kromkamp & Josemi...

-Torres we sold Luis Garcia to them as part of the deal,
yeah. Like I said they almost never happen. Were rumoured to agree about 10 every transfer window and that's 3 ALMOST examples in 10 years.

From Olé an Argentinian newspaper
Lio, meet Javier

Jorge López
12/08/2010

Mascherano has already agreed with Barcelona to join and thus fulfill an old dream. It was agreed between the clubs and will be announced shortly.

Javier Mascherano has long said he wants a change of air and one of his main goals is to play for Barcelona. His representative met with people from the Catalan club and reached an agreement for the transfer in the coming days.

Reaching an agreement between the clubs was not simple and was finally worked out when Liverpool accepted Hleb as part payment in addition to 15 million euros to sign the national team captain. Guardiola gave the ok just now in Barcelona, after a meeting that was held in the clubhouse.

Javier, well, it will be one of the most important signings for the Catalans, who had been somewhat neglected in the market with the additions that Real Madrid had made with the arrival of Mourinho.

Obviously, to close everything, they also consulted with Lionel Messi, who obviously gave the ok for Mascherano who is the new jewel of the Catalans.
-------------------------------------

I like Hleb but he's 29 not exactly one for the future...
Seems like a done deal.
But we need a fucking left fullback and a striker!!!
Where the hell does Hleb fit in?

I don't think Mascherano is last player to leave Liverpool before this window closes.
My suspects:
Aquaman
Maxi
Babel

We've no idea how Hodgson sees it, so i just picked one of the three at random.

Although I do think Kuyt will be less privileged now Rafa has walked

What a godawful deal this would be. At least ask for Bojan or Pedro. Hleb doesn't fulfill any need of ours and we'd be left with very little money to fill our gaping holes at LB, LW and back-up striker.

Rory Smith has tweeted:

Argentine paper Ole says Mascherano to #Barca is done, for £12m plus Aleksandr Hleb. Spoke to Javier this morning. It wasn't done then. #LFC

Sorry, got a bit distracted. No deal agreed between #LFC and #Barca for Masche, Hleb or no Hleb.

It's a shit deal if it comes off.

we either need 2 players (Maxwell + Bojan, as they fill in need) + 12 mill or 25 mill ... we really cannot grew screwed here. There is no way Masch is worth so little.

that would be acceptable.

I wouldn't even want Bojan.

not impressed, keni?
What would we do with him?

He'd be warming our bench week after week.
so you'd want pure cash from barca, because let's face it they aren't releasing maxwell.

Well, yeah... unless they want to give us Keita (and value him very reasonably given his age), but that is unlikely as Guardiola seems to love him.

Either way, this seems a little strange as last I read Barca were sniffing around the hundred year old crocked Senna as Rosell plays the broke card.

Hleb could play on the left, but yeah, LB and CF are more pressing needs.

Garcia wasn't part of the torres deal.
He kinda was.. He was sold to Athletico Madrid at the time we bought Torres. Him going to A Madrid was part of the negotiatians to do the deal to get Torres.

More reasons why this could very much be true...

Hleb in..

Babel out..

Skysports.com understands Birmingham are stepping up their interest in Liverpool's Ryan Babel.

The Reds are ready to offload the former Ajax ace so that they can fund some of their own signings before the close of the transfer window.

The news has rekindled Birmingham's interest in the 23-year-old with Blues boss Alex McLeish a long-term admirer of the versatile attacker.

Birmingham failed in a bid to sign Babel during the January transfer window, but they have been keeping tabs on his situation at Anfield.

McLeish has been frustrated in his attempts to bring in attacking reinforcements after missing out on Moussa Dembele and he could now refocus his attentions on Babel.

I'd take that, ok Babel has age on his side... However time to get rid.. as he has proved more than frustrating on more than one occasion.

Hleb is the better player, money raised from Babel and left overs from Mascherano deal should fund a New striker and Left Back..

I can't remember how many seasons Hleb played for Arsenal but you could hardly claim he was a key player for them. He didn't seem to have the physical strength that players need to survive in the Premier League. I just can't see what we would do with him if he came to Anfield.

Better option than babel i'd say, more of natural winger

Crouchy is on his way back is also the rumours doing the rounds..

it all fits.. Hleb, Cole, Johnson & Maxi would be able to play to Crouch's strengths
