First thing he'd do is sack Kenny.
[/quote]

You can't really compare Landry to Kenny. And in retrospect, the Cowboys were a slumping (to shit) franchise most of the 1980s and Jerry made a bold move, and the right move. He changed the franchise by bringing in Jimmy ...

Anyways, if he fired Rafa, you wouldn't be too unhappy, would you? 🙂

Agreed. Never understood why he took such incredible shit for that move... It ended up with them having arguably the greatest team ever assembled over a 5 year period.

Yeah, is was obviously a wisecrack. Not sure it required a literal defence.

Besides, he'll be taking more than enough new shit when he hauls down the revenue sharing scheme and totally fucks the whole league.

Sorry mate - Living in Dallas, I've gotten used to defending Jerry from such attacks... And bery few are only wisecracks.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I hate him. But not for Landry. I could give a shit about that. Who he wants to employ is up to him.

Nah. He owns it. He can run it how he likes. I might feel different if I was a Cowboys fan I suppose. Dunno.

The man is going to rip the CBA apart and trash everything the league has done in the last 15 years. Since 1993 competition in the league has improved dramatically. Think of the twenty years before the CBA. All the Superbowl winners were big city, big market teams. From the eighties onward it was becoming a joke. It was unthinkable that a team like the Bucs or the Colts would win the title. We've already had more different teams in the Superbowl since 93 than we had in the league's history before. Inter-season parity has increased significantly. With good recruiting and managing a team can totally turn its fortunes around. It's the most competitive major professional sports league in the world, and one of the most popular.

But Jerry thinks he's subsidizing the whole league and the cake should be sliced up on market share. Big market teams already have inherent advantages (Kraft's building of the Pats has shown how to harness them), so pulling the rug from under small market teams will just mean going back to a small pool of teams filling most of the late post-season and Superbowl berths. The anticompetitive nature of the CBA has promoted competition within the league more than anyone could have predicted. Jones lacks the class of owners like the Maras, and with old man Mara gone now I fear Jones may shout down objections to gutting the current scheme.

I hate the cowboys as most know, although I have no problem with jones. He has delivered great things for his fans. How I'd love to swap him with ford...

I think it's between the 'Boys, the Pats, Joe's niners & Terry's Steelers

Agreed. And I think it's a very close run thing between Dallas and Pittsburg for the best of that elite group...

Slightly off tpoic, but I think the fact that all but one of those teams had all-time greats playing for them in several positions, shows just how great Tom Brady is (was) to lead a bunch of spare parts to three in four years.

Yeah, but nobody knew at the time how it would work out.

I mean Tom Landry was the only coach Dallas had ever had at that point, he led them to 5 Super Bowls, and countless NFC championship games.

It was a great move, but hindsight is 20/20.

But you're agreeing that it was the right thing to do, right? They did win 3 in 4 seasons as a result of it, so it had to be, right..?

And how great Belichick is as a coach. Very few of those players were recognised stars before coming to New England and very few will or have left and remained that way.

I think that Pats team was such a finely oiled machine, that it would have done really well with any half decent QB (as it did with Cassel) but to STILL do it 3 in 4 years is a tremendous testament to what Brady bought ... It was a phenomenal team (that should also have beaten the Giants!)

Warner retires:

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Kurt Warner thanked God, hugged his children and wife and said goodbye to an NFL career that seems the stuff of sports fiction.

The 38-year-old quarterback announced his retirement Friday after a dozen years in a league that at first rejected him, then revered him as he came from nowhere to lead the lowly St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls.

Then, as if going from stocking groceries to winning NFL MVP awards wasn't improbable enough, Warner was written off as a has-been and rose again to lead the long-suffering Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl.

Barry on Emmit, the latest member of the HoF:

Playing at the same time as Emmitt Smith, can you comment about your thoughts on his career and what stands out the most?

Sanders: Emmitt was just a fantastic competitor. His style reminded me a lot of Walter Payton. He could be physical or he could be finesse. He had that football speed. He was just a great competitor. The only thing I don't like about it is he has a lot more jewelry than I do. A lot more hardware and jewelry.

There is a perception that had you not retired early, you would've not only broken Walter Payton's record but ran away with it. Your thoughts on that?

Sanders: Well, (Emmitt) rightfully deserved it. Look at all the years he played. He put up great numbers. Sometimes, what the numbers don't show, if you look at the big games where Emmitt Smith came up with the big run or big play, those are the things I think the Dallas Cowboys fans remember. Emmitt Smith fans remember. It wasn't just the numbers, but if you look at what he did in those crucial situations, that's what makes him so special. It's not just the amount of yards he ended up with.

What are your thoughts on the notion that Emmitt played behind a much better offensive line than you did?

Sanders: I think he played with some fantastic players, there's no doubt about that. There's nothing we can do about that. But at the same time, I don't think you can just put anybody behind a line and say they're going to be good. I'm sure Dallas had other running backs that were backups that didn't play the way Emmitt played. More power to them, they had great lines and a great coach.

I guess Barry was saying what I was saying D - eh? 🙂

It's not an argument. I was told earlier in this thread something along the line sof, "how can you say that putting Barry behind Emmit's line wouldn't have resulted in his numbers being as good/better as Emmit's?" and I said that you just don't know that. I'm just using Barry as proof that my pov is valid.

Newsflash.

It would. I know it. You know it. Emmett knows it. And Barry knows it.

C'mon Avy - Are you really trying to tell us that you take Barry's 'I'm-not-gonna-get-drawn-into-this-arguement-on-Emmett's-big-day-so-I'll-just-give-the-generic-you-never-know-answer-because-otherwise-it'll-be-everywhere-forever' answer as proof of anything? What did you think he would say? You're MUCH better than that, mate.

Next you'll be telling us that the referees really are out to get united, 'cos Fergie said so. or it wasn't really a red card 'cos Wenger didn't see it.

I remember I watched a few re-runs of Barry's days at Oklahoma State (amazing to think they had thomas as a back up before he transferred) while I was in the US and what struck me was his running style for a very solid team (I don't know if they were ever top 10 material in his days) was similar to how it was with the Lions ... He was never a RB who liked to run through the tackles, where Emmitt made most of his yards behind Nate "I only sold drugs after my career ended" Newton etc .... Barry's stats would have been similar to that of his stats in Detroit -

YAY! My teams were one-for-two in major finals today.

What a game, best superbowl in a good few years. I fancied the Saints going in and I think they more than deserved it on the night.
