I'm optimistic that between a new CB, a new FB and maybe Can doing gerrard's non-existent defensive duties, that we can sort our shambles of a defence out.
The only thing keeping skrtel in a job are the goals he scored.
Lovren would be a good signing, I'd love Rojo too, he seems to be able to do both like shaw, I bet his price has rocketed though.

We're going to have some budget though.
I just hope we follow up on all the talk of signing top class 1st team players. Overpay for Lovren, Rojo etc by all means if they're our top targets and are going straight into the 1st team for 4 years+
I can't justify this. Skrtel has been immense now for 2 years so its Skrtel plus 1. Rodgers used £25M last year to address that plus 1, alongside having Daniel Agger. And yet here we are debating a £20M bid for Lovren.
We should not be in this position.

Agreed, it's his fuck up really, I guess this puts question marks over Sakho, or he still has his doubts about Skrtel, while Ilori is still considered one for the longterm, with Agger likely to go.
£20m is too much, never mind £25m.
So there's a deal to be done at about 22-23m?

Like I said earlier, if he's as close to being exactly what we need as is imaginable in the one KEY position that needs improving on from last season - overpay by 5m and reap the benefit over the next 5 years.
The Champions league money doubles in 2015-16 with the new BT Sport deal. I'd rather be overpaying by a few million here or there to ensure (as much as you can) we're in the best position to finish top 4 this year and build on last season.

Is he even that good? This seems like another Lallana to me: decent player but costing about double what he's worth.
Centre Backs are at an absolute premium at the moment, especially when the teams signing them are placing more emphasis on attack, which means the defenders have to be even better than normal (as they can get isolated more often). We're in a world where David Luiz costs £50 million. Lovren is better than half as good as Luiz.
We will never have a solid back 4 with Glen Johnson part of it, never.

Ashley Williams has signed a new 4-year deal with Swansea. That kills off all those silly rumours that keep popping up every few months linking us to him.

It's pretty frustrating to find ourselves in this position after spending near enough 25M last season on the same position.
I've seen Liverpool waste so much money over the years it's hard to really keep the faith that everyone knows what they're doing. It feels like every time we've had a chance to blow a wad and really establish ourselves we've shot ourselves in the foot.
I really hope we don't end up in that situation again. One of these days it's going to be fatal.
