So, gone a bit quiet about a new CB because of all the Suarez stuff. But we're definetly going to buy one imho, and still looks like Rodgers first choice is Lovren. Who do you want as our new CB?

I like Lovren and I've done so for a while. The quoted fee of 18-20 mill is a lot though.

Read a few comments by Claus Lundekvam who played for Soton for over a decade and is a legend down there. He was full of praise about Lovren. Could understand if Lovren wanted a move to us but he would be devestated to see him leave.
Commanding, fantastic organizer, vocal and a leader. Deserved most of the credit for Soton only conceding 43 goals compared to 60 last season.
He was the reason the back 4 looked so compact and even the young full backs coming into the side slotted right in under his leadership.
Could play right and left centre back.

Sounds like he's just what we need. Modern CB with decent pace and good in the air but also that leader and organizer that we have missed since Carra retired. Being able to play right and left he can easily play with both Sakho and Skrtel.
If he can add those qualites to our defensive game then he might just be worth paying a bit extra.

Funny you made this thread, I was just reading this. Lovren would be my choice too.

Dejan Lovren to force exit from Southampton with pre-season no-show

Lovren to force exit from Saints with pre-season no-show
Dejan Lovren is expected to be a no-show at pre-season, as he attempts to force a move away from Saints.
Sources close to the player have confirmed to the Daily Echo that the centre-half does not currently plan to return to the club this summer.
Lovren, who is being pursued by Liverpool, has already submitted a transfer request and does not wish to play for Saints again.
He will be expected back at St Mary’s later this month, with his involvement at the World Cup meaning he is scheduled to return later than most of the squad.
However, the 24-year-old Croatian international is unlikely to appear.

Liverpool want to sign Lovren and it is understood that at least two approaches from the Reds have been knocked back this summer.
The defender, who has also been linked with Tottenham, is unhappy at the stance of the Saints board, and believes an agreement was in place with him that if another club offered a certain amount, believed to be around £20m, he would be allowed to leave.

Liverpool are said to have matched that figure, only for Saints to stand firm and knock back the offer, and the club will point to the four-year contract the player signed when he joined from Lyon in an £8.5m deal last summer.
Lovren is said to also be frustrated that the project he was supposedly told about last summer has “completely changed”.
The Echo has been told that Lovren’s ambition is to play Champions League football and that he does not feel that will be possible at Saints any longer.
Lovren was an integral component of the team last season, forming a strong partnership with José Fonte at the heart of the back line.

His impressive performances have seen his value soar, and Saints’ current stance is that they do not wish to sell him, while they expect him to honour his contract.
By intending not to return, though, Lovren is hoping he can force through a transfer.
However, if Saints do agree to sell him, they will not accept a cut-price deal on the basis that he wants out.

From the Daily Echo down in Southampton.

Agreed, we should definelty have signed him last season for 8,5 mill instead..

Edit: City quoted 40 mill for Mangala and 35 mill for Benatia makes you wonder though.
The transfer fees being bandied around are crazy though.

15 tops for lovren, we should probably go elsewhere, to be honest i think our main focus should be full backs

It's not just his market value that's important though, rather his value to us. On that basis, it could be argued he's exactly what we're crying out for at the back; A commanding leader of a centre back, dominant in the air with his best years to come.

He's also come into the premier league from abroad and shined instantly.

He's worth 20m to us.

I'm surprised at you. 😉

We should've just given Southampton our entire transfer budget and taken their fullbacks, lallana, schneiderlin, Lambert and lovren

Fuck it. Let's move to the south coast, play at St. Mary's and just change the badge on the red shirt.

Given that Sakho cost us 15m a season earlier straight from French league, it's not surprising that Lovren would cost 20m a season later after having shown that he can play in the Premier League.

I guess I'm just miffed in general with the way players prices have rocketed in this window, then again, we're one of the biggest culprits who've inflated the prices. I do like Lovren, but £20m+ on the back of one season? Ridiculous.

It is what it is, unfortunately. That "Certified to play in Premier League" stamp is expensive. 🙁

I was curious why Lovren moved for just £8.5m, so I looked up his record. Apparently, he had a few years left on his contract with Lyon when he moved to Southampton, so the number of years left on his contract wasn't the issue. The answer might be in his appearances for the club - after playing 26 league games in 2010/2011, he played only 18 league games in each of his last 2 seasons with Lyon. He missed a good chunk of the 2012/2013 season with an ankle injury and a cruciate ligament strain, and also missed 2 months (Jan and Feb) of the 2011/2012 season (can't find the reason). So perhaps concerns about his fitness might've been used as a bargaining chip then.

For the record, he played 31 games for Southampton last season.

Just for a comparison, Vertonghen left Ajax for Spurs for about £10m a season before Lovren, but that was with just a year left on his contract.

Don't think we need to buy an expensive CB, especially since Sakho Ilori is probably the long term plan.

Really don't think we need to splash 20M on Lovren unless we get at least 12-15M for Agger.

I feel a bit bad for Southampton, especially if we were to take Lovren off them too.

How about one of Dortmund's centre backs? Aren't they meant to be the dogs?

Don't we have Ilori?

I reckon we just need the current centre-halves and the goalkeeper to talk to each other more than anything else.

I couldn't disagree more. I think CB – and not just any CB but a real leader and a calm influence – is actually our biggest priority this summer. Well, other than a striker to replace Suarez.

Sounds like you just described Sakho to me.

Liverpool FC have offered Southampton £20million for Dejan Lovren – but are being frustrated in their attempts to wrap up a deal for the centre-back.
The Croatia international is Brendan Rodgers’ No 1 defensive target and he is desperate to join former Saints clubmates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana at Anfield.
Lovren, who has handed in a transfer request, believes he had a gentleman’s agreement with the South Coast outfit that he could leave this summer if a club paid £20million for his services.
However, despite Liverpool matching that amount, Southampton are refusing to do business and are holding out for a higher fee.
Lovren has been left fuming by what he sees as Saints reneging on a promise and is ready to go on strike in order to force through his dream move.

jaysus , are these really the prices you have to pay for these sort of players ?

We could end up giving southampton over 50m this summer , are these players really of the quality we demand ?

Sakho is an aggressive, physical and smart CB. But calming influence he is not. In my humble opinion, both him and Skrtel need a partner like Lovren, Vertonghen, Hummels or Agger at his peak: a calm, cerebral, technically flawless kind of defender. Maybe Ilori can become this partner in a few years, but we need a solution for next season, because Sakho-Skrtel partnership probably will never work well enough.

Yeah, they're too similar in their tendency to be a bit "last ditch" in their approach, rather than reading the game and controlling the back line.

I guess it depends how Sakho approaches next season really. I think that describes his play really well for France, at the WC.

Gentleman's agreement? I think i have heard that one before and we all know what happened when a club bid agreed amount +1p.

Welcome to 2014. Where every other club knows how much income we have via the PL, CL (it's coming), Sponsorship etc. because it is all there in black & white. If income is going to keep going up then so are transfer fees.
