Nathaniel Clyne

He is ace, already one of my favorite players in the squad.

When we get a little more fluidity to our game and he starts getting more involved going forward we are going to love him even more. His defending though has been class so far. He knows when to tuck in next to Skittles and when to stay wide and tight to a winger.

If we go with Ibe on the wing vs. Arsenal I hope he is paired up with Clyne on the right bc the Gomez/Ibe pairing was a bit scary for me Clive. Ibe didn't help out Gomez enough.

Yeah very good couple of games.
Unlike most of you all though im unconvinced by Gomez. He looks sketchy

Yeah he looks too good to be true right now.

Watch him go and break his fucking leg at the Emirates now or something.

He's really good now - very pleased with him.

If there's anything to nitpick, it's that he gives away a fair bit in terms of height (he's 5' 9" or 1.75m). Opponents could probably look to exploit that during setpieces or breaks by sending a good aerial ball to the far post and letting a taller opponent attack him when he doesn't have the space or time to make a running leap to make up for the lost inches. Guys like Fellaini, Ivanovic and the taller wing players / mobile forwards will probably be coached to look for that.

He's a damn fine player nonetheless.

If he achieves the same consistency as Finnan he'll be an even better player, because (IMO at any rate) he brings more sheer talent to the table.

They're both pretty quick too, which is fairly essential these days, though when it's alongside good positional sense and awareness, it's pretty priceless.

Lovren worried me last night, because he reverted to old, constantly wandering from the backline. He's getting a bit more protection from these two, because both have the instinct to tuck in. If he stuck to the basics he might be onto something, but he seems to have this destructive instinct in him which inevitably leads to mistakes, either from him or the players he leaves exposed.

To be fair to him, he was being targeted, I was worried in the first 15minutes, but thankfully he dealt with that and looked fine after a couple of initial shaky moments. I think that'll be a learning curve for Gomez and the midfielders though, in that situation they need to identify what the other team are doing and look to provide him some additional protection.

This may be melodramatic, but his form may be one of the keys to our season.

If he can play better, consistently, than suddenly his leadership abilities can come to the fore (not that he's some kind of inspirational god... but fuck me there's a paucity of leadership at the back) and everyone benefits. From the first Bournemouth free kick last night you looked across our back lines organisation and just thought "Fucking hell.... we'll be lucky not to concede a couple tonight....Skrtel will spend 50% of the time on his arse, and the new boys at full back will have to get by on their own instincts whilst Ming flaps at a few"

Neither of which happened...Skrtel had a very solid game and Ming dealt with everything that came his way.

Lefty, give me a break. I'm not saying it was one of Skrtels worst performances, but hes guaranteed to do his customary "heroes-last-ditch-slide" at least twice (along with his WWE penalty area wrestling); and Ming looks like hes had an attack of the David James every time a cross even looked semi-likely

Well you did say "Skrtel will spend 50% of the time on his arse, and the new boys at full back will have to get by on their own instincts whilst Ming flaps at a few"...and my point is neither of those things happened. I've been critical of both players in the past but why not give credit where it's due rather than toss around these lazy accusations that have absolutely no basis in fact.

Lefty, I admit to have exaggerated at "50% of his time", but surely we don't have to go and hack at the match footage to show Skirts sliding around on his arse a bit and Mignolet flapping at crosses - are you saying you dont recall that?

Neither had much to do but what they did they handled pretty comfortably I thought.

It's really puzzling why none of the guys who make those neat highlight clips about our players versus this or that opponent have put together anything on Clyne versus Stoke or Bournemouth. There's stuff for Can's and Firmino's cameo, but just nothing at all about Clyne. I find it pretty bizarre that they'd not make something on one of our most solid and consistent players in both games.

He looks good, but I remember at around this time last year telling the manager of my son's U15 side, who is a Southampton fan, how good Lovren looked in our defence; so I may hold off a few weeks before repeating that 🙂

There was a moment where he crunched into a tackle and won the ball and then pegged it up the field with the ball, played a one two and then someone lost the ball, they then played it quickly out to our LB area and a cross came over to the RB side and I was like 'Fuck there is gonna be a massive hole' and as the ball swung over there he was in the CB/RBish area winning the ball.
It was fucking witchcraft.

I really love him.

I have to say, along with Milner and Benteke that seems spectacular good spending. Those three for Sterling.
Far removed from the shitfest of last summer.

He could well turn out to be our best right back in the last couple of decades.
Very pleased we have him.
We finally got a good deal out of Southampton!
