I think winning the tin pots is a symptom of where your club is at in terms of being a challenger in major comps. You win these pots because you have strength in depth, a seam of quality that runs well beyond a first 11. Having that gives you a great chance in the domestic cups, but of course, it is exactly this quality that divides potential champions from 'top 4'. What has held Spurs and ourselves back in the league, and what ultimately cost us in the CL final last year, is that lack of depth. So I think the whole 'culture of winning' is less important than that deep, velvety squad.
Or it could be just papering over the cracks of a stagnating regime like at the Arsenal in recent years.

I don't think that papered over the cracks. People knew arsenal were fucked and with little future.

I don't give a shit about the domestic cups. I'd rather be a CL finalist that an FA Cup winner as it means you've had a load of boss games and the chance of something great. An FA Cup can be an easy draw and no matter what, you end up in that shithole Wembley. I wouldn't even be arsed going to the final.

Papering over the cracks is more appropriate to united finishing second last year. Those trophies for arsenal didn't delay or change anyone's mind

I get and agree with the ideal, but at the moment we need to cultivate a winning atmosphere. Twat the league cup or FA cup, and that might help us if we get the CL final again

Why all this either/or stuff?
I'd settle for winning ANYTHING this season.

I wouldn't. Playing our best team in the domestic cups might reduce our chances in the league and in Europe, which is where our priorities need to be if we want (and I for one definitely do want) long term success rather than an occasional outing to Tottenham's home ground in pursuit of second-rate silverware.

Are people advocating winning the league cup to gain this winning mentality/atmosphere aware of how we did when Kenny last won it with us? When he got the sack, were you all slamming the decision, saying no, we might not have got into the top 4 but we have the winning mentality now? (I have the utmost respect for Dalglish so not trying to attack him)
Did the league cup help us the following season under Rodgers? Or did team building under Rodgers in his first season, having won nothing, help us get within a whisker of winning the league instead of outside the top 4?

Winning the league cup would be great and all but there's no point going all out for it with our current squad. Our focus should be on the PL and CL. Even that's really really tough.

There's a difference between sustainable and flash in the pan. Rodgers was flash in the pan, as he only did something of note in one season. We won a trophy with an awful side under Kenny, and that's because he instilled the right mentality. Klopp has started that with us, but we seem to have a mental block when it comes to actually winning a fucking thing. The duck needs breaking, and then it'll all knit together nicely

I wouldn't settle for it, but we do need to win something. We don't want to go all Arsenal and just keep qualifying. Mourinho always starts by aiming to win the league cup, and it's one of the few sensible things that he's done. It just takes that bit of pressure off, while setting the team up for greater challenges.

Why not use all our energy into gaining this winning mentality by going for the title? Why risk our league and CL form by risking our best players?
Fuck that. Let’s go for the important stuff.

The right mentality? That was the season in which we had the worst Anfield record for over half a century, scored the least goals and finished 8th.

Beautiful Woland ... you really are man. Well put..this is how we should all feel.

It was the start of something, you could see players were fighting when it mattered. Polar opposite to most other years.

That was my poorly expressed point. Winning anything this season would take the pressure off as you say, and set us up for hopefully more success. As I've said before, I'd rather we got in the CL once every decade but won it than get to the final every year but not win it.

I don't often disagree with macca (or with you for that matter) but I'm still not buying this time. Winning the FA or Carabao Cup would be a nice bonus but nothing more than that IMHO. I'm afraid I don't see that it would make an appreciable difference in itself, and I would very definitely want the league and the CL to be given season-long priority in respect of team selection.
